A Penn Applause 6000-8000 size reel matched on a rod like a Wilson Live Fibre 8-15kg or 8-10kg would probably do the job, they are 7-8ft rods which would come in handy when casting the soft plastics.

Would cost a bit over $300 but is a good quality outfit that will be quite durable.

I asked this question a while ago and Dogtooth, who catches some monster kings, recommended a penn reel 750 or 850 i think and this comes in a combo. You dont have to get the combo but he said it was a reasonable setup for that price. I know my desciption is not great but give gofish a call and i am sure they will know what i am talking about.

G'day Famedtrash,

Don't know if you have a preference for a spinning reel but for downrigging have a think about getting an overhead outfit. I've always found them much easier to use with a downrigger because you're going to be constantly adjusting depth (or should be). For me, spinning reels were a hassle as is was hard to operate the bail arm, the downrigger, etc, etc. and they got in the way when using the rod holders in my gunwhale.

That said, there's no reason not to use a spinning reel... they do the job fine. It's just personal preference.

If you think about an overhead, have a chat to Pete at Go Fish about a TLD combo (something like a TLD 15 on a Backbone rod), a Charter Special, or maybe an Okuma outfit. They're quite commonly done as combos and are great value for money.

Cheers, Slinky

Saw a downrigger setup with an overhead on one side of the boat and a baitrunner on the other. Turn on the baitrunner and down she goes with the bomb. Worked quite well.

I would imagine that to double as a SP flicking combo that an overhead may not be as good as the baitrunner, but having said that, I would not personally use a baitrunner to flick SPs.

Nice thought with the Baitrunner. Haven't tried it myself but it's an obvious solution to some of the negatives of spinning reels. You're right about SPs though... I wouldn't use either option. I don't think there's a good compromise as the 2 styles of fishing are so different.

Famedtrash, I'd seriously consider the Baitrunner option as a versatile downrigging weapon but maybe it's worth thinking about 2 outfits... get the one you want most now and save up for the second down the track. You'll get much more out of each style of fishing with a more specialised outfit.

cheers for the advice

i think im going to go with a TLD 15 combo as its the cheaper option

and ill use this just for downrigging

then later down the track ill pickup a spin reel like Josh said

ATM i already have a decent spin rod that i can use on the downrigger

it was only a cheap one so its days are numbered but it will last me a little while longer

thanks again for the advice
