Hobart Flattie Session

Gday Raiders,

I am originally from Tassie and spent my youth (8-15) fishing for flatties in the Derwent River. Back in the day I used a nice Jerwis Walker combo, a cheap beef chop for bait and really didnt worry about the type or strength of line i had. Those were the days.

I return to Tassie a couple of times a year and last week wondered why in the last 15 years I had not wet a line in the trusty old Derwent. The reason is partly relo bashing, but usually not much of that happening at dawn, and given that in Hobart most places are 5-10 mins from the Derwent really there is no excuse. So off I went and picked a couple of cheap Daiwa combos and some Gulp light pink plastics.

Hit the spot around 8am at a fullish tide and "thud" on my second cast landed a nice flattie. 2 hours later we had 5 keepers (note that there is no legal size in tassie but I can assure all but one would be keepers in NSW - many went back and if the smallest fish was caught 5th and not 2nd it would have gone back too). They just couldnt resist the pink gulp (good recommendation from the local tackle store) and my brother in law and I had a great session.

The only downside was that my bro didnt get a touch even though he was using exactly the same gear, with exactly the same lure, from exactly the same location. We even swapped spots every time a fish came in. Shows that there is definitely some luck involved even when flattie fishing. By the end I was praying for him to catch one but alas it never happened. It was also the first time my niece had been fishing and she (at 3) was more than a little critical of Dad. Lol.

Anyway, if you are ever in Hobart chuck a line in. There are no crowds, lots of flatties and it is a great place to fish.

No way mate!! That is exactly where i was fishing. I was on the north side of the casino on the left as you come into the lower car park. Where were you? Any crocs? 20 each session is impressive. I have one spot over at Bellerive that regularly had flatties smashing chop meat at the surface in a about a metre of water. I plan to go over there next time and see if it still produces.

I know what you mean about the zinc works but when you are only eating them rarely the risk is negligible. I wouldnt eat them every day though, and lets be honest Flatties are a delicious table fish. Thankfully all the Hobart councils have teamed up to try and clean up the river but a lot of the initial damage was done in the bad old days of the zinc works.

Cheer for the reply mate,

Good luck on the water!!

Gyday Duncs,

Great report and catch. A mate of mine regularly raves about the flathead fishing in Tassie.

Not that your catch is of concern but it may be worth checking whether they do have size regulations for flatties in Tassie as i was sure they did.

Check out

Hope to read more reports like that.

Cheers
