Fun Day Out South of Cronulla

Hi Raiders

Was out and about today in search of some lovely flatheads for me and my friend. Headed down towards Garie Beach with a couple of lures out hoping to catch a few Bonito's on our way down so I can stock up on my Bream bait. Managed six by the time we got down to our drifting grounds. Once we reached the flathead grounds we did several drifts over the next few hours catching plenty of flatheads throughout the session. Alot were undersized but we managed a great feed for both our families. The seas were a bit lumpy but the fish were definately on today. On our stroll back up the coast we found a massive school of Salmon around Marley (boy we had some fun on that school). All in all it was a great day out :1fishing1:

Hi groper,

Sounds like i must put it on the to try list.

Only ever tried stripe tuna that way and YES it was 5 star.

Was telling my mate to eat one for lunch raw as he left his lunch in the truck :074: Good to hear they are tasty raw.

Never scared to try different things sounds tasty :)

Beaut feed there Chris!

Bonito are not too bad smoked too.

Any problems with jackets? Every trip between Marley and Garie recently, the jackets killed us.

Cheers

Peter

Hi peter,

Thanks for the reply Get out and get those flathead only one leatherjacket all day :thumbup::thumbup: We couldn,t believe it.

Although those leatherjacket nightmares aren,t far away couple of weeks and a temp drop they will be back thick as ever.

A top feed of flatties, a couple of bonnies for bait (and perhaps a feed as already suggested) ... you had a top day on the water, Chris.

Looks like there is a few sandies around at the moment!

Cheers

+ 1 to Hodgey's post  well done Pongrass18ft  Ian I can't remember seeing the Sydney area fish so well for so many species in general - it's as though a complete change has taken place in our part of the Pacific with the effect of changing outside currents on fish movement and migration after so many years of only average fishing if not drought type conditions in the main in the estuaries on most species for quite a few years now... After all the very quiet winters we've had we've seen some exceptional out of season results including these types of results from Pongrass 18, Cungee George and PeterS who enjoy launching in the Hacking and spend a lot of time fishing the run along the National Park Cliffs. Looks like it won't be all that long before we see some thumper size snapper moving up along the cliffs from the south coast.

Cheers

Thanks hodgey,

I finally got my fishing friend to try flathead :thumbup: (blue spot) he loves them now as he's only eaten dusky flathead and he didn't like them, more for me :yahoo: .

Can't wait to catch the blue nose bream this week my wife is converting me into a bream specialist as that's her favourite fish. Can't beat a home cooked meal FRESH FISH (YUMmm.)

Hi jewgaffer,

Fishing has been exceptional this season catching many species Iv'e never caught before . Spoke to a spear fisherman a few weeks back that had speared a 17kg jew off jibbon in the daytime, really good to see.

Lets hope some of us raiders can catch and post such fish through the winter coming months. They were in abundance 4 years back in the hacking. My wife and I were out every night chasing them....total addicts....all caught on fresh live squid

It was strange Sunday, not able to find a yellowtail for bait in the Hacking or along the ocean ledges??? What's your theory?

Watch for heavy rain and chocolate water and have a crack at the thumper size yellowtail that follow the run in tide right up to the platform around Gymea bath. Mark my words Chris the more rain and the muddier the water is the better the Hacking fishes for the larger winter yellow tail thhe hardiest fish in the sea. Blue water golden kelp and no connection to the fresh and because of the dead end at Audley makes the Hacking what it is

Cheers mate

I would be guessing you were using light gear as there are some stonker jew in the system that will frustrate you if not prepared this time of the year.

I,ve been done alot lately , on bream gear and it is over in under a minute.

Wish the heavy gear got hit with the same hook up , they always seem to go on the light gear :ranting2::ranting2:

Hey Chris,

That's a nice catch of flatties and bonnies there.

It seems you're as keen as me to fish through the winter, except the hacking and southern cliffs have more fish than Botany Bay in winter.

Your wife is converting you into a bream specialist?

She's a smart girl !

My wife and I drool over freshly caught / grilled bream and whiting.

She loves the jewies as well but I rarely fish for them - I can't justify sacrificing 10kg of bream for just a crack at a jew in the summer....
