This whole process proved a couple of points for everyone to remember come election time. Firstly Barry O'Farrell is prepared to give up on fishers in NSW to keep the peace with the Nationals. Secondly the Shooters and Fishers party aren't worth a pinch of ^&*(. The Shooters adopted the fishers and with the support of media identities like Al MaGashlan tapped into the fishing community for support and at the first instance where they could be useful they completely bailed on those they sought for support. And then there's the minister for Fisheries...well what can you say, if she can thumb her nose at a Parliamentary Committee then you can't expect the average taxpaying voter to have any consideration as she decides our future.

Very true.

At least they aren't in bed with the Greens & locking out areas completely.

Cheers,

Grant.

My newly elected neighbour for the Sutherland Shire council does not want the Fisheries building closed, and staff re-located, however, the State M.P.s are pushing ahead with it as part of de-centralisation of government jobs, to give the country people job opportunities.

Regardless of that, I would prefer it to stay open.

From the following article already 56 have quit while 17 part time will face redundacy. 32 jobs will be created in Nowra,23 in Port Stephens and 21 in Coffs Harbour. Not the sort of number that are going to inspire the local chambers of commerce. About half of the 20 scientists at Cronulla had agreed, or were expected to agree, to transfer. Well there in itself is a brain drain for reseach. And for all this in will cost the State government to upgrading and improve these regional facilities. And for all this Barry O'Farrell hasn't been seen, leaving it to the Deputy Andrew Stoner. More weak leadership from the Premier.

Yes it's true that marine rescue, another govt dept, has moved into Cronulla Fisheries. The crazy thing is that some fisheries guys are still working there every day, feeding the fish left in the pond, analysing samples and making gear. This is because the anti-fishing minister Hodgkinson and her inept senior bureaucrats wanted to publicly announce a successful closure prematurely, before many of our fisheries scientists had any suitable alternative work places.
