Bate Bay

Yowie

Recommended Posts

Headed out into Bate Bay this morning at sunrise, and the westerly winds are still kicking along, though nothing like yesterday. Could just hold bottom with a 6 ounce snapper sinker.

Caught a small spiky flattie on the first drop (and the only one caught for a change) and used it for bait, the 2 fillets made 4 baits and landed the 6 flatties, but it was some time between bites.

Was a bumpy ride back to near Shelley Park, and landed the 2 squid after many casts with the jig.

One of the flatties had an eel in it's stomach, a bit decomposed but still intact and as long as the 40cm flattie. Another one had a couple of small fish and a piece of kelp in it's stomach, they will eat anything if hungry.

Wind forecast to blow up again.

How small was the "spikey flattie" used as bait??

About 25cm long. That species rarely grows above 30cm, no size limit and there are hundreds of them about at times, and the blue spot and tiger flatties like eating them. They are a fairly tough bait, can pull up 2 or 3 flatties with the same bait until time to use a new piece.

The spikies need to be handled with care, as they have very long and sharp spikes on the sides of their heads, and the dorsal spikes are poisonous ; if you get stung by these dorsal spikes, your hand will sting for up to an hour.
