Gday all, well lovelly morning on the harbour again. A few boats out early.

Headed out to DY way starting off in 60m. Light sw, current to the sth.4kt and water temps between 18.3-19.0 deg. Some nice mowies around avg 40cm. Leatherjackets plaguing all over and some good size ones amongst them. Some great fish on the sounder just can't get to them, jackets followed through to boat and it didnt matter where u went they were there. Birds galore all over the place salmon schools galore. Albacore and yellowfin r on fire out wide with plenty of hook ups heard on radio. Im sure someone will have a better report. Thats it for the day.

At least you managed something. With the warmer current slowly moving south, the fishing might improve.

Have the jackets only just re-appeared, or have they been there for a while? Spring time usually brings a few better ones on the bite.

Yowie, seriously there are some great fish around see photo, jackets r the concern. I have never seen so many schools rising to the surface in along time. We fished solid for 7hrs and moving helped for 10 min and that was it. Lost over 40 rigs!

Yes they disappeared for a while due to cold water, but have returned with a vengence due to the warm current. I know the pros sth of newcastle were getting bugga all in their traps. Now their averaging 600kg a day.

Johnno they were at nth head at 645am and offshore between dy to the heads saw 3 different schools.

Good flatties in 50m through the sand and gravel.

Fished similar areas on Sunday. The jackets are of better size averaging 3 to a Kg. You chased baits to the surface and you can pull them up non stop using a small sinker and 1/0 to 2/0 hooks preferably with squid or fish baits without losing gear and filled your bag limit in about an hour.

Seven of us landed 95 jackets off Long Reef on Sunday and lost 37 sinkers in the process.

They were following lines up to the surface and gave us liitle chance to catch anything else. They really did spoil a lovely day on the water. I reckon we'll give fishing a miss until the reports are leatherjacket free.

95, is that all? :074::074::074:

You need to catch 9,995 every day to reduce their numbers just a bit.

If they are big enough to eat, well, that's better than the little bastards that were around in winter, 15 to 20 cm mongrels.

You need to use the pre-assembled wire rigs, can buy them for a few dollars each, BUT, you need to add a black wire trace above the top swivel to reduce bite offs.
