kelvin200663
Hello fellow raiders, this is my first time posting on fishraider and i'm seeking for your help. Been fishing land based for a while, tried rock fishing, beach fishing etc, but now I'm keen to spice things up and take fishing up a notch. I was hoping you guys could lead me to the right path for purchasing a fishing kayak and also the gears that come along with it. So what exactly do i need to buy (sounder, trolling motor(?), specific rods (?), lanyard(?)), and how much should I be ready to pay for everything all up? I'm also wondering if those kayaks on ebay/gumtree that goes for around 300-400$ worth buying? Hope I can get this plan running smoothly asap!! Cheers Kelvin
Witha
G'day and welcome First place you can start is right here in the kayak section, have a look through and there is a heap of stuff on kayak setup. And rods etc depend on your target species so check the tackle talk subforum. But I can give you some knowledge and hard lessons learnt after getting my kayak and researching my bum off about it. Sounder and trolling motor would be further down the list of essentials if you want to get on the water. I've just started and although I am about to instal my sounder I've managed many successful sessions without it. One thing I can say...lanyard EVERYTHING. Lost my favourite rod this week by not having it strapped in. Other quick editions are bungee chord to and carabiners to tie off to things if you want to stay put, and a milk crate with some rod holders screwed on for storage behind you Also some 38mmish pvc pipe to raise the level of your flush holders away from the water. As for rods, I haven't seen the need for the specialized kayak rods which are usually very short, I prefer a longer rod (6'6 or 7ft) as it allows me to reach over the nose of my yak to steer a fish. Rod weights and styles depend on target fish. As for what you should pay...I'm quickly realising it is an endless excercise in spending if you want it to be! All depends on your budget and how much DIY you're willing to do. As for the ebay specials, many members have bought them and find them great, but it really depends on your height, weight, and most importantly what you want to do with the yak. Im 6 foot 2 and 115kg and I wanted a bit more stability and room so I got a Scorpio Terrapin xl. Which is still cheap but almost 4m and lots of extras. If you'd give us a rundown of your needs / targets / size / budget /usage I'd be happy to share what I know, am very new to kayaking but I reallly put in a heap of hours scrolling through info. Also there are some incredibly experienced yakkers on here who I'm sure will help out if I stuff it up Cheers Witha Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk Edited March 28, 2014 by Witha
benm
Totally depends on where you want to fish and what you want to catch. Fresh water, estuaries, offshore, or all of them? I have a Hobie Revolution 13 and I recommend it highly, although it is nowhere in the price range you mentioned. Instead of paddling you pedal, so your hands are free to fish. I use it offshore extensively. Wouldn't bother with a motor until you feel confortable with your yak, then decide if you really want or even need it. Get a sounder though, it's a must in my opinion. Definitely leash everything, period. If you flip over you will lose it otherwise. Another big thing to consider is how will you transport it? Roof racks, trailer? Salt water is a b****. Also, sent you a PM with some more info.
kelvin200663
Thanks for the quick reply u two! I got too eager before I looked around the forum, and went ahead and made this post. sorry about that haha. Ill research into the DIY and what not. As for a rundown, I'm around 172cm and weigh around 70kg. Budget im hoping to be under 1000$ (possible?) But im willing to go around 1500 if really needed. As for target I'm looking at the estuaries (does that count if im keen for like port hacking, lilli pili etc?). And yeah roof racks ive had a look, the rhino (?) roofracks looks pretty solid to me, thoughts? Sent from my GT-I9506 using Tapatalk

chilledFisho
Been using a hobie revo 3 years now and i would say its been a dream for fishing. around head lands and harbor fishing Sydney and trout lakes. You can purchase a out rigger for it for extra stability but never needed it in medium rough seas. having the foot pedals as your motor power is such a benefit. really recommend the hobie revolution. A sounder is a must for sure. Im looking for more yakers who head out around the sydney area, all my mates who have yaks are usually to hung over on the weekends to go out. can do arvo trips during the week days. any one keen let me know. GreyNurse
Hi Kelvin, As far as roof racks go, Rhino's are a pretty popular choice. I've got a set for my Camry and they're really good. As far as loading and unloading the yak goes, if you have an SUV, there are a good range of rear loaders around. If you have a sedan, I can personally vouch for the Rack 'n Roll bar. It only takes a quarter of the effort than you would use to manually lift your yak on and off the racks. Hope this helps. kelvin200663
Thank you for everyone's replies! I'm going to take a look into retailers selling the asari 3.7, pretty attractive to me. Thanks for the advice GreyNurse, I drive a Mazda 323 Astina Hatchback, gonna have to look at compatibility and stuff, but it should be fine , and thanks will look into the rack n roll bar! Have a look at the youtube clip G'dayI've got a side loader and can honestly say I wouldn't be able to load the yak solo without it due to a bad back.
