Boat Ramp Follies

I think my boat launching skills are great, the problem is when it launches without me ;-(

I'll have another go this weekend. Will have to make sure my painter is attached better!

I've got to put on the starboard side bollard and get a couple of fenders too.

I've still got the bruises.

Well I have my own story about my boat launch on the weekend.

I like to pick quiet ramps just to avoid any pressure from watching eyes.

Anyway, I was flying solo at tascott, got everything lined up and reversed in. No issues

Got out to push the boat in but wasn't down far enough, so I backed in a little further

but was a bit to brisk on the brakes, and the boat launched itself so i ended up jumping

in to grab it. Lucky my mobile was in my bag and not my pocket.

Ended up getting cut a bit on the oysters and banged my shins the trailer cause the ramp was super

slippery but I had the painter so all was good. I then walked down to the end of the wharf

and bugger me, the painter came off the bollard, so I'm standing on the wharf, dripping wet, covered in blood

holding a painter while my boat drifts off.

Limped over to my car (bare feet and super sensitive) , drove out of the ramp, parked the car and trailer (first time too)

put my shoes on then ran over to my boat, where a nice stranger was trying to grab it for me

and it floated back. He held it and I was able to get on and tie it up and then I could take it out.

Quite funny now, but at the time .....

My shin still hurts!

If you are reading and you were the guy that helped me, thanks very much!

I love those couple of little ramps at Tascott. That's were I always put in when I'm fishing in there.

Hardly anybody ever goes there for some reason. Maybe cause it's kinda steep and pretty narrow?? But if you know how to back in a trailer properly it's a ripper of a little ramp.......

But it can be pretty amusing watching front wheel drive cars spinning out on the left over weed from the tide change though. Happens to me almost every time!! ;)

I think I posted something about this before at some stage and its a little embarrassing to relate in again in previously undisclosed detail but here goes...

I remember during the very early hours of the morning on day last year I had just launched the boat and it was tied up at the wharf.

Because it was at night and I was by myself I did put the life jacket on as a precaution. It's a little spooky at this time of the morning and the area is a little seedy so I am always aware of any cars or shadowy figures in the background. I went back to the car to grab something and well... sometimes your mind plays tricks on you and I was sure I could see someone hanging around in the shadows so I felt a little nervous... you know the feeling you get when you a walking alone at night and you imagine someone is behind you? Well I well and truly had that feeling.

Anyway, I thought it best to jump on the refuge of the boat so I quickly untied her and got on board. As I got on I'm still thinking there might be someone following me. I was not aware at the time but as I stepped over the side of the boat the activation chord for my self inflating life jacket got caught up where the Bimini poles meet and activated it. Well as it quickly inflated and I felt a restriction around my body and neck and bugger me if it didn't feel like some homicidal maniac had grabbed me from behind!

Well , I think I let out a muffled yell (I hope not a girlie squeal) but very quickly realised what it was and sat there embarrassed thanking Christ there was nobody there to witness my ridiculous antics.

OMG! I am reliving the embarrassment just telling the story again!

Cheers

Jim

That is hilarious.....

Thank you very much for reliving it... :D

What is a painter?

A painter a name for the line that attached you to the boat.

Maybe its just a sailing term and not on powerboats?

A bit like you don't have ropes on boats, you have lines, sheets and halyards.

Maybe you attach a rope to an anchor chain?

Some more follies. I went over to the Gosford ramp as my mechanic was coming down to

help trouble shoot the engine. I tied the painter on, and did a perfect launch, walked to the

pontoon tied up, went and parked my car and hopped in and started the engine. All perfect

While I was waiting a guy in a tarago put his boat in, then he couldn't get out. Foot flat down

on some weed on the ramp, didn't do anything except create a heap of smoke spinning thewheel. A few of us went over

to give him a hand. He got it out and took off without a word of thanks which was a bit dissapointing.

No idea how he got on getting back out.

That is a bit disappointing. I always give people a hand at the ramp if they are experiencing difficulty and most people really appreciate it but the occasional one

forgets their manners. Hard to fathom really.

Haha, sorry but that is funny!!! Have your launching skills improved???

This is really bad but during tourist season up here, especially if there's a westerly wind blowing. We go down to little beach, sit back and have a few beers and watch the novices try and retrieve their boats. Some of the best evening entertainment you'll ever see! And free!

But if you are up here having the same trouble, yell out fishraider and I'll come and help! :)

Cheers scratchie!!!

Thats exactly what i do scratchie on boxing day lol. Hours of entertainment to be had
