tba003 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Hey fisho's i was wondering if anyone could shed some light on wind conditions when fishing. for example ideal= x knots, fine= x knots etc. Would be greatly appreciated.
SgtBundy Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Ideal = wind behind you. Fine = you can still hold onto the rod Poor = unable to stand up Do fish feel wind? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
oziodin Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Here is some Tables : Wind speed table for Conversion of Knots, Beaufort, m/s and km/h. Knots Beaufort m/s km/h mph Label Effect on sea Effects on land < 1 0 0 - 0.2 <1 <1 Calm Sea like a mirror Calm. Smoke rises vertically. 1-3 1 0.3-1.5 1-5 1-3 Light Air Ripples with the appearance of scales are formed, but without foam crests Wind motion visible in smoke. 4-6 2 1.6-3.3 6-11 4-7 Light Breeze Small wavelets, still short, but more pronounced. Crests have a glassy appearance and do not break Wind felt on exposed skin. Leaves rustle. 7-10 3 3.4-5.4 12-19 8-12 Gentle Breeze Large wavelets. Crests begin to break. Foam of glassy appearance. Perhaps scattered white horses Leaves and smaller twigs in constant motion. 11-15 4 5.5-7.9 20-28 13-17 Moderate Breeze Small waves, becoming larger; fairly frequent white horses Dust and loose paper raised. Small branches begin to move. 16-21 5 8.0-10.7 29-38 18-24 Fresh Breeze Moderate waves, taking a more pronounced long form; many white horses are formed. Chance of some spray Branches of a moderate size move. Small trees begin to sway. 22-27 6 10.8-13.8 39-49 25-30 strong Breeze Large waves begin to form; the white foam crests are more extensive everywhere. Probably some spray Large branches in motion. Whistling heard in overhead wires. Umbrella use becomes difficult. Empty plastic garbage cans tip over. 28-33 7 13.9-17.1 50-61 31-38 Near Gale Sea heaps up and white foam from breaking waves begins to be blown in streaks along the direction of the wind Whole trees in motion. Effort needed to walk against the wind. Swaying of skyscrapers may be felt, especially by people on upper floors. 34-40 8 17.2-20.7 62-74 39-46 Gale Moderately high waves of greater length; edges of crests begin to break into spindrift. The foam is blown in well-marked streaks along the direction of the wind Twigs broken from trees. Cars veer on road. 41-47 9 20.8-24.4 75-88 47-54 Severe Gale High waves. Dense streaks of foam along the direction of the wind. Crests of waves begin to topple, tumble and roll over. Spray may affect visibility Larger branches break off trees, and some small trees blow over. Construction/temporary signs and barricades blow over. Damage to circus tents and canopies. 48-55 10 24.5-28.4 89-102 55-63 Storm Very high waves with long over-hanging crests. The resulting foam, in great patches, is blown in dense white streaks along the direction of the wind. On the whole the surface of the sea takes on a white appearance. The 'tumbling' of the sea becomes heavy and shock-like. Visibility affected Trees are broken off or uprooted, saplings bent and deformed, poorly attached asphalt shingles and shingles in poor condition peel off roofs. 56-63 11 28.5-32.6 103-117 64-73 Violent Storm Exceptionally high waves (small and medium-size ships might disappear behind the waves). The sea is completely covered with long white patches of foam flying along the direction of the wind. Everywhere the edges of the wave crests are blown into froth. Visibility affected Widespread vegetation damage. More damage to most roofing surfaces, asphalt tiles that have curled up and/or fractured due to age may break away completely. 64-71 12 >32.7 >118 >74 Hurricane The air is filled with foam and spray. Sea completely white with driving spray; visibility very seriously affected Considerable and widespread damage to vegetation, a few windows broken, structural damage to mobile homes and poorly constructed sheds and barns. Debris may be hurled about. So that i can check the predicted wind before making my decision if i should head out or not. Without habing to use a crazy big sinker to keep my bait where i want it.
mrsswordfisherman Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 try the Windfinder app for iphone or android perhaps?
Nolongeramember Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Hey fisho's i was wondering if anyone could shed some light on wind conditions when fishing. for example ideal= x knots, fine= x knots etc. Would be greatly appreciated. If you mean ideal as in so you are comfortable I like it to be under 10 knots when I'm fishing open areas. If you are in a river or you have cover then more than 10 knots is ok just depends on the specific place. Sometimes a bit of wind is good to help with casting distance if it's going in the direction you want. If the wind is going against where you want to go then that is crap.
NaClH2OK9 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Jamestown is correct, about the correction. This also goes for 'wave direction'
oziodin Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Yep I'm Incorrect the more you look into it the more confusing it becomes with low goes clock wise High goes anti clock wise . Cheers. Oziodin
nickb111 Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 What about wind and tide direction, is it more beneficial to have the wind blowing with or against the tide?
Guest no one Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Nick - it all depends on where you are, if you're on a rock sheltered by the wind but the tide is running into the wind what exactly would it affect apart from a float or surface fishing? On a boat it's a different story as try heading into the wind with the waves fighting against them, results in a rough ride! But for the fish biting... The tide is stronger than the wind so the bait under the water won't be affected too much. When I used to fish lakes in the uk I fished at the bottom where the wind was blowing a when lake fishing a lot of the fish are eating insects being blown into the water which all end up in one corner from the surface breeze. End of the day it all depends on the variables you can affect (where and how you're fishing) to how it will affect the fishing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Crossfire63 Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 I try to avoid fishing with the wind, it scares the fish and you never know you may follow through
