Sea conditions

Hi all,

Was hoping to get out a bit deeper this weekend and have a go at Snapper fishing in the Port Stephens area.

I'm fairly new to boating in general so don't know what websites to check or what sort of conditions I am looking for. Can anyone tell me a good app for website to look at and hint the type of conditions that are ideal and then the type that are dangerous.

Thanks heaps

Geoff

Hi Garfield

All you need to know is on this site

you've got BOM weather, willyweather and seabreeze.

I just keep tabs on all three and you can then make up your mind.

If you are new to boating stay inshore at anything over ten knots untill you get an idea on what the sea conditions are like above that.

It also depends on boat size and what you are comfortable with.

Hi GH1952,

thanks for the reply mate.

I have been outside before with others but not so much where I have been the skipper.

The only real info I have received off one of the guys I have been out with before is "forget it if there is a southerly". I just need to know what I am looking at as far as picking a day where I can go out on a planned trip where its safe, and the sea aren't too rough. I have all of the safety gear and will be cruising out in a 5.2 Savage Escort with a 125 on the back.

Thanks

Geoff

P.S Mate what is BOM Weather?

Hey Geoff,

I'm happy to jump on board and show you the area if your looking for a decky?

The info about the southerly is incorrect. During winter you will get south or westerly winds. A strong westerly is the more difficult to negotiate especially at any ramp in the bay. During the summer we generally cop a n/e wind most afternoons, so if it's blowing hard in the morning I usually don't bother going offshore because it's only going to get worse in the afternoon. All the websites vary and I don't think any are very accurate for this area. The best way to gauge the swell offshore is how the waves break on yaccaba headland. I'm they are breaking hard, then stay in the bay!

Cheers scratchie!!!

Guest no one

Do yourself a solid and take Scratchie up on that offer!

His knowledge of the area and having him as a deckie for the day is pretty much a big vein of gold. You wont get much better advise and knowledge on here from the Port Stephens area.

Seriously - one trip with him will open up your future ventures loads!

As for reading the weather... no better way then cross referencing swells on BOM, Willy Weather, and Seabreeze... knowing what winds you can cope with and how rough it will be. Going out in a 1.3m swell with 2 second swell period intervals and 20 knt winds will be a nightmare where as going out on a 1.5m swell with 10 second intervals will be a little smoother for you.

Wind is my major factor, i know Botany is pretty much impossible to fish and drive in anything about 20 knts regardless of direction, as i have to drive through Botany pretty much any time i go fishing I wont go out above 20 knts but thats a personal preference.

Cheers Ed. If not I could always talk him to death! :)

I've spoke with Geoff today and we are trying to tee something up for the weekend if possible.
