Backing When Using Braid?

Hello all,

I am spooling up a new reel and I have enough 50lb braid to fill it up. Just wondering what the deal is with regard to backing i.e. is it used mostly as an economic filler when using exy braid or are there other reasons?

Put at least a few wraps of Mono on first Mark. The braid on its own will tend to spin on the spool and not hold too well. The mono will help that. It is also used for economic reasons as you suggested.

The theory goes that you need at least some mono to allow the line load to grip the spool. If you don't use any, the braid will spin in the spool core when a decent amount of drag is applied. I haven't tested this (never had a full spool of braid available), but have sucessfully used only a couple of layers of mono as backing with no problems.

Sounds like you are after big fish Mark, 50 lb braid is heavy duty. I reckon you need mono as well, for the reasons mentioned above, plus to fill the spool up a bit

If you have two spools then load one in reverse first to get the amount of backing needed correct then rewind onto the other spool. Takes the guess work out of how much backing to use if you don't have enough braid to fill the reel up.

I use an old 1000m line spool with a bolt through it and in a cordless drill for swapping line. Because of the big diameter it doesnt take long to do this.

Just make sure you keep everything straight so there are no twists

This is an extract from an specialist seller on the use braid..

" It is also suggested that you use a Mono backing on your reel (otherwise the BRAID, being very slippery because it is impregnated with Telflon,won't "bite"-it will just spin on the spool and crank as hard as you like,you won't retrieve any line!). It is common to use a hundered yards of BRAID on top of a reel of mono (the BRAID will take up approximately the same space as one third the amount of good mono of the same weight - so,for example, 300 yards of 30lb BRAID will replace approximatly 100 yards of good 30lb monofilament)."

same method i use, works a treat!

and the spare spool idea, fill in reverse and refill 2nd spool ensures a perfect result!

It depends on what you are putting the braid on and what you will use it for. Really in most fishing situations, 100m of braid is enough, so fill the rest with mono as it will most probably never see the light of day and braid is bloody expensive stuff. The same goes with mono, these days I find I am doing a lot of topshotting on my overheads that aren't used for casting, no point throwing away a whole spool of line if only the first 100m or so is rooted.
