To go with the other thread,

What often well regarded fish do you really not rate when it comes to eating.

I'll go for

Jewfish, not so tasty

Bream, can't be bothered with small ones- can't bring myself to kill a big one

Morwong

Leather jackets, especially big ones

EDIT, forgot one, barramundi that's anywhere near fresh water

Never eaten carp, but:

Mowies (would rather eat a shit sandwich)

Sole I caught in Port Hacking (like eating leather)

Large jackets

Kelp fish (also called cockies)

Large salmon (though will eat it if nothing else is available)

You have not cooked it right. Not a poor man's lobster, but rather good fillets anyway.

Not sure about red mowies but the blue ones are excellent on the plate IMO.

Snapper and bream, I don't get the hype.

Well regarded fish I think are over rated-

Trout - They are often rated as excellent whereas I put them in the average basket.

I don't really rate any fresh water fish that well although I reserve my judgement on Murray Cod having neither caught or eaten one. (one day Big Neil is going to rectify this for me!)

Regrading fresh and saltwater fish I am reminded of the difference in quality of a Saltwater Barra against one that has been in the fresh for a while. The saltwater version is far superior IMHO.

Cheers

Jim

I tried Sweep, terrible, very mushy meat.

Aussie Salmon top of my list, that fishy smell and taste stays in your mouth, ewww.

I'm a little surprised on some of the above.

Tailor is great smoked and also wrapped in foil with lemon salt pepper on the BBQ

Trevally cooked the same way or even sashimi is very nice, nice and sweet meat.

Bream shallow fried, awesome

Bonito sashimi, awesome.

Gotta try it guys!

Anyone against flatties?

Someone has to hate tuna

Reading the other thread about fish we all love- the thought that crossed my mind was that flathead was listed on most peoples lists ! So maybe safe to bet flatties are well loved haha

Tuna i dont mind sashimi but cooked not a big fan

Worst fish to eat on South Coast.

Sweep

Pig Fish ( I know lots of people like them)

Yellow Tail

Leather Jackets

Most Underrated

Slimy Mackerel (Yes these things are fine fare. Also fantastic in a Masala)

Pike (Get the skin off and they are not bad....not great but not bad)

Morwong (So many give them a hard time. They are lovely)

Trevally (Great Sushi and nice fried as long as slightly underdone.

Best Eating

Snapper

Rock Lobster

Kingfish

Amberjack

Jew Fish

I often wonder on peoples tastes on some of my favourite fish to eat , i like mowies and yes we do like sweep and even moarie wrasse , but all our catch is kept alive in the livewell and only killed just before cleaning , i wonder how many just throw them in the esky and 8 hours later expect to clean them and still be good ,

I leave them in the Esky for 8 hours. Often when I get home the boss is not happy if i spend the next 2 hours cleaning fish. I kill my fish immediately and slurry them. Can stay like this for a couple of days and they are perfect. Sweep though....how do you make these things taste good. Would love to know.

Maybe I'll try keeping a few sweep in a bucket in the sun cos putting them on ice doesn't work for me

Lol......there are a million of them up here around broughton island and big bastards too! I've tried using them as bait and the fish won't eat them either! :)
