Houdini
Should I use lemon scented gum wood chips to smoke food? Wiki tells me the lemon smell is from "citronellal" used to make insect repellent. Just from this I would not use it unless someone with experience or scientific back up so different. Shops sell scribbly gum, blue gum and brush box. big Neil
G'day Houdini. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but I recall that we used to use oak wood chips to smoke butterflied Tailor, and they were very nice. I think you will find that the Citronella is not the Toxic ingredient in fly spray. Most likely it is there as an odouriser because fly spray can smell pretty pungent, otherwise. Hope this is helpful. If you're in any doubt though, just use a different timber. What food are you smoking anyway? Cheers Big Neil.
