snatcher Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Caught these two this afternoon off the shore at Nelson Bay and am after a positive ID please. The first one is some type of leatherjacket I think. http:// The second one looks like some kind of wrasse http:// Many thanks John
0 Blackfish Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 (edited) First one is a Fanbelly Leatherjacket. Monacanthus chinensis. And the Second is a Juvenile Spangled Emperor. Lethrinus nebulous. My reason for the Emperor is you can see the blue spots starting to appear on the side where Grassys I believe don't have them. Thats my guess. Edited March 31, 2017 by Blackfish
0 Mr Mullit Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Fan bellied jacket and a spangled emperor by the look of it.
0 PaddyT Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Fan Belly Elvis fish and a "Grassy" -Grassy Sweetlip or Emperor- first one pretty common , second one not so common that end of the world
0 big Neil Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Hi John, how's the trip down under going this time? Haven't heard much from you. Don't tell me the fish are wising up to your Pommie fishing tactics, at last. Good to see you getting among some proper fish lad. Cheers, Neil.
0 PaddyT Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 14 hours ago, noelm said: Spangled Emperor and Grassy are often confused, that one looks more like a Spangled, but a bit hard to tell from that angle, either are very good eating, min size I think is 30cm? Still calling grassy - they tend to be darker than the spangles, no min size in NSW- either way great little fighters and good chewing too
0 Mr Mullit Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Spangled emperor are a much more common catch that far south and in inshore waters. Plus the blue spots. Any more photos with the fins up?

0 Blackfish Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 (edited) No blue dots on the flanks(sides) on a Grassy but this one you can see them faintly. Edited April 2, 2017 by Blackfish
