James Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 had a couple of hard luck stories over the weekend live baiting, chasing jews. i come up with the conclusion my hook sizes were to small (4/0). i had two good runs on xxo yakkas. but come up loose both times. just wondering what sizes you guys use when live baiting thanks.

stevefish Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 Oops, forgot 4/0-6/0 anytime, megabait6-8-10/0.
kevvie Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 4/0's are way too small for jew. We use a snelled rig with the first hook (pinned in the jaw) 8/0 and the second hook (in the tail region) about 10/0. If you are using smaller live baits go down to 7/0 and 8/0's Used to use one hook but the hook up rate was only ok... a two hook rig is extra insurance
out n about Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 6/0's are good. i brought a pack the other day and the hooks are bent in a way that when you put them through the yakka's the hook sticks up. ill go fine then pack and post the name later on.. Cheers
Martin Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Live bait size will also determine hook size, however I try to use a 6/0 or 7/0 and not to bury the hook too deep into the fish. I am happy with a single hook. On squid I have just started to use two hooks.
jewnut Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 you must select the appropriate size according to the size of the bait as well as the target species. Having said that, i like 6/0s for most of my baits but will go up to 8-10/0s for big slab baits and live baits. whatever you do, make sure the hookpint is well exposed, its possible you missed the fish because the hookpint buried back into the bait.
djmac Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 simple rule as stated match the size of the hook to the bait
