5 year old v salmon

Hi guys. Took my boy and his gramps out on Friday. Last day of school holidays.

We put in late morning at tunks. I was pretty surprised to see so few boats at the ramp even considering there being a bit of wind.

We tried a few spots for squid for no result.

trolled around middle head for zero.

much to my boys delight we got an escort from 2 dolphins for a couple of minutes. Most of that time he could have almost touched them, so a priceless experience.

With the fishing looking bleak we trolled out around south and then north head without a touch. My last resort to save some face we anchored up just inside north head near the rock slide and burlied with bread and we had a bit of fun catching yakkas. Any fish will do when you are 5 years old. Light spin gear with 3 pound braid kept it fun. A bonus was the two travally he pulled in by himself.

By 4 pm it was time to pull the pin with two blurters to show for our efforts.

I thought ok, last chance so clipped a small rapala on to my boys 3 foot ugly stick with 6 pound mono and started to troll back to across the harbour to head home.

THUMP! Right in the main ferry channel the little rod folds over and he's on.

With a few reminders about his pump and wind and to stay calm. At least calmer than his old man he got the fish to the boat. Released to fight another day.

We hooked one keeper tailor for his gramps to wind in and that's our day on the harbour.

He caught his first fish earlier this year, he rates Mrs Swordy up there with santa after the the package she sent him( thanks heaps) and now has a pelagic to add to his list.

Trevally cooked up really well. Under rated we recon.

I took an absolutely terrible vid of the salmon capture but it is too big to load.

Sorry for the rambling.IMG_2032.JPGIMG_2050.JPG

Thanks guys, I'm counting on him to keep me fishing as long as I'm breathing.

he has been fishing with both his grandfathers so hopefully in about 25 years we'll be taking my grand kids.

go the young fella,

best last day of holidays he could've had

what type of rapala lure were you using

Hey Regan, the exact lure is a SXR10  BSRD. It's a 10 cm suspending slashbait in blue sardine colour. They dive to about 1 meter and suspend.

My reasoning for using this one was low resistance on the troll as it was on a 3 foot  ugly stick. (Kids rod) and perfect prey size for rats, salmon and bonito.

Awesome report. Now we've got another convert hooked for life.

That must have made both your days.

Thanks man. He's definitely a convert. He thinks he's the worlds greatest fisherman now! His little sister is jealous and asking to go fishing, just the two of us. She is even asking for her own fishing rod.

It looks like the bed time fishing stories are paying off.

And yes, more than a little bit proud.

Awesome stuff. I love to see how the little fellas get excited about fishing.
