nutsaboutfishing
I've been reading that you spool a reel to about 1/8 inch (about 2-3mm?) From the edge of the spool. My question is, my spool has two sections. The area of the spool perpendicular to the rod where the majority of the line sits and then at the top of the spool there's a 'lip' where the spool angle changes to about 45 degrees to the rod. This area is about 3mm wide and ends at the very edge of the spool. My question is do you spool to 3mm of the very edge or to 3mm of where the perpendicular area joins the 45 degree area. For some reason I've always taken it to mean the later which is why in my photo you can see some red area on the spool. Is this correct or should I be spooling onto the black area? xerotao
Yep, all the way until the taper starts
Green Hornet
As the others have said, all the way to the black. The 2 - 3mm they talk about refers to Daiwas etc with a rounded spool lip.

Also Daiwa designed some reels to spool up line in a taper. Something to do with casting further.

Kevin1
While you're at it, might be worth while to reverse the braid. By that i mean you spool the end that you've been fishing with (i.e. tying leaders, swivels) on to the spool first so that you have 'fresh' braid at the business end of the braid
