Pickles
Poor weather and busy with farm work this past week has meant not many chances to nick out for a fish, but was picked up by a buddy ( Hayden) and his mate (Dan) and we planned to hit the Fads for Dollies. Unfortunately Dan succumbed to seasickness, so we headed for protected harbour waters and live baited inside due to big swell and wind. We got a few nice kings and had fun with a school of Trevally who honed in on the burley trail. Bait was hard and we ended up with XL Yakkas, which are never the best option. On our way in though, there were huge schools of Yakkas and slimies off Nth Head. We flicked some 7g and 10g jigs at them and had a double hookup straight away. The Kingies inside were taking the baits very gingerly and not “hit and run” as they normally do, and we dropped several before we cracked the code. The key to successful fishing is to alway experiment. A few times I’ve swapped my standard 6/0 Mustad hoodlum to a snooded two hook sliding rig with a 5/0 or 6/0 on the top and medium XS (extra strong) treble on the bottom (attached with uniknot). This is what worked today. As always, there were more rats than “biguns” , but any Kingies is fun, even the little rats. Yowie
Kingies at any size are fun to catch. Shame about sea sickness for one of the crew, it is not a good feeling (from what I can remember as a kid)
