  1. G'Day Ray Great photos, I always enjoy the read. What I will say is I would love to live your life, unfortunately I still have to keep the wheels of industry turning, mind you I am only a lotto win away. I'm heading up to Port Stephens this weekend and won't be able to help myself, I'm sure I'll be on Stockton chasing a couple of Sambos Not sure if you can help me, I've seen your pics and Avoca looks alot like Newport, Bulgola, Avalon, Whale and Palm in particular the more northern of the beaches. Do you know if these beaches produce salmon?
  2. Hello to you Salmon Hunters I'm in desperate need of a fish and looking for a bit ol local knowledge I did a bit of a reasearch trip up to Whale Beach this morning and didn't see too many fisherman. I'm looking for a few tips as to where in the area you suggest I might try. From my knowledge of the area The fist main surf beach is Newport, looks like a easy beach to fish from although gutters look a bit average. When you stick to the main road, the next beach as I understand it is Avoca. Is this the beach you are refering to? I assume you park in the carpark and fish in the hole in front of the surf club. What about the beaches further north I think it's Whale, looks like a good stretch with a long gutter has anyone fished it and does it produce fish? My final question is bait, my guess would be pilchards, I noticed a few garages but a distint lack of bait or tackle shops, do these garages carry a basic range Allot of questions I know, any assistance appreciated Scorpion
  3. Great Lizzard, How could you stand going to work after catching that
  4. G'Day Spizza I tried Salmon a couple of years ago and have to admit didn't think too much of it at the time, It's been so long I don't really remember what it was I didn't like, mind you they have a very average table fish reputation. Next time we pick one up I'll ice him down, treat him right and put him straight on the BBQ. Let you know what I think Scorpion
  5. Still a very newby at catching Kings and as yet have not invested in a downrigger myself. Like most fisherman love watching video's that teach you new techniques, saw one recently put together by the two Dan's if you can find a copy it's well worth it Scorpion
  6. Spizza Good to see you got a few, by the way did you camp on the beach or did you retreat to the warmth of more permenant shelter? Great fish, I know they are not great eating, but you have to admit they are allot of fun to catch Scorpion
  7. Hello Raiders Last night I attempted in vain to attach a few pics of Chad's Sambo. I reckon I've overcome my technical ineptatude and here they are
  8. Hello Raiders I always enjoy a good report in particular there is nothing better than when a young bloke catches a good fish. I've had my nephew Chad visiting from Qld for the last week and told him we would land him a Salmon, whats more I prommised a big one. As many of you know Stockton is as good as anywhere but a little rough for the young and inexperienced so we headed to Fingal. For those that don't know you can park in the carpark and make a 10 min walk accross the dunes to some pretty good gutters We hit the beach at around 7.30am, tide was building and wind was slight from the Nth West. I loaded up with a Pillie on 4 ganged 4.0's and launched into the deeper part of the gutter while the father in law and Chad both fished for bream and whitting in shallow using worm. And which one do you thing produced the fish.. as always it's not how far you cast or how deep you are that counts. The father in law makes the call "we're on" and passes the rod to Chad who for the next 5 mins had the fight and time of his life. For the record we're calling it 69cm and the best part of 5kg. Best of all when we asked Chad what to do after the phots he agreed the best place for him was back where he came from, good Karma to let the first one go I reckon.
  9. Depends on what end you plan on hitting the beach, I'll assume you are entering the beach from the Anna Bay end. If so my experience is good gutters right along the beach however the best producing gutters start from wher the fishing huts are approx 10km run. The further you head along the beach from about the 10km mark the deeper and softer the sand becomes so be prepared to reduce the pressure. There is generally heaps of pippies along the beach at low tide and the salmon love them. If you want to spoil them you can throw a ganged pilli at them, be assured if they are there they are not fussy eaters. Pick your gutters well, go for a run all the way to the wreck. Burley works, walk up and down the gutter dont stand still. Dont forget the beach permitt, you can get it from the BP at Anna Bay Go Hard or Go Home Scorpion
  10. I have family up there and was sent Stinkers latest news of a local named Jack Downey who caught a 9.4kg Snapper, which is not unusual for up there however this one was caught off Middle Island inside the bay. The report goes on to say rock hoppers are having a ball from Rocky point north to Fingal with top catches of luderick, drummer and Snapper in the wash. Stinker believes the way the season is unfolding they are in for a huge luderick invasion Hope it helps
  11. Hello Fishraiders, Scorpion here AKA Deano. Thanks for the welcome to the site, I look forward to spending some quality time reading the updates. The Scorpion came about as thats what I do most of my fishing from nowdays. I'm an ex Queenslander living in Sydney however I still bleed maroon blood at SOO time. I've been fishing about as long as I can remember mainly from the beaches where I developed a love for catching Taylor mainly Straddie and Fraser Islands. I tried a few of the northern beaches when I arrived in Syd without much success. Meet the now Mrs Scorpion who hails from Port Stephens. The father in law knew all the good spots loves his fishing and never had the chance to do to much so he and I have spent the last few years exploring the port Stephens area and can pretty much guarantee a feed ( Flathead, Bream or Whitting) anytime we wet a line. It's time to get a bit more serious so I've geared up for outside and had limited success on the reefs arond Broughton. The goals over the next year or so is to pick all of your brains if you don't mind, catch some reasonable Snapper and would love to catch a Kingie or two. Mrs Scorpion is due with the first in a couple of weeks which will slow the fishing down a bit but she's pretty good and knows how much I enjoy getting out there. I firmly believe in 'Happy wife Happy life' and never take more than I'm going to eat Regards Scorpion
