  1. nothing to lose at all mate. i got a berly bag the other day and i thought if i tied that to my anchor before it went down then maybe the berly will be released right underneath me rather than sinking 20m away and maybe the fish will even inspect the bag and i can pick them up from right under the boat. i dont know its trial and error but its meant to be a beaut weekend so even if im not successfull it will be nice day to be out on the water fingers crossed.
  2. i always drift too and have also been catching a whole lot of nothing. so i was going to try and anchor and throw some baits around too, so im interested what spots people recommend. i have been told that you have to burley up hard in deep water to get the fish around, well thats what an old timer with a bag full of trevally told me about a month ago. good luck mate.
  3. yeah what a fizzer that turned out to be.
  4. That is the funniest thing ive seen in a while. hillarious. American fisherman hey.
  5. A popular Darwin lake has been closed to bathers as authorities hunt down a giant fish that tried to bite off a woman's foot. Lake Alexander is close to the beach but barricaded with a fence to protect swimmers from crocodiles and jellyfish that roam the nearby waters. But a giant fish — believed to be an estuary cod — has driven Darwin residents away from their once-safe watering hole. Darwin City Council spokesman Grant Fenton said a local woman was standing in the water when she felt pain coming from her foot. "She told us that she looked down and saw her toes and half her foot were in its mouth," he said. The woman kicked the big fish off her foot and escaped with minor lacerations and bruising. Darwin City Council workers have closed the lake to swimmers and will now mount a sophisticated fishing operation to catch the underwater menace. "They're going to string up several nets and long lines across the lake with hooks and bait," Mr Fenton said. "The plan is to catch the fish and then release it back into the ocean." The size of the fish is still unknown, although Mr Fenton said it would have to be a very large specimen to be able to fit its mouth entirely around the victim's foot. Some species of estuary cod can grow to a length of over 1.2m and weigh over 150kg. Locals are debating how the fish got into the protected lake, with some suggesting a fisherman may have dropped it in as a baby — not realising how large it would one day get. The hunt for the fish is also provoking some cringe-worthy puns in the Darwin City Council office. "We'll get our lake back, ‘cod’ willing," a staff member said.
  6. on the kurnell side there is a big wharf and sometimes a huge ship docked just out from it. the sticks are two big red poles that sit about 5m apart and are away from the heads if your at the end of the wharf. my directions are pretty poor but when your out there it should make sense hopefully.
  7. ive found i have to search a bit for them i havnt found a spot that always holds them consistently but "the sticks" near the oil wharf have worked for me and are worth a look.
  8. i use the spray and it seems to do the job i use it on soft plastics and have had some great flatty sessions. i reckon its worth the $9.95 i spent the one can lasts a while as long as you dont go overboard on usage.
  9. well done again mate, i think you could be the only person writing successful reports on the bay these days. on saturday i fished off kangaroo point and got a couple of 40-45cm models, i was stoked i hadnt seen a legal fish for about 2 months it seemed like a monster haha, but your one really is well done again.
  10. well done id love a flatty like that while it is slow going.
  11. its been much the same for me on the bay latley but word on the grapevine is that a 52cm bream was caught in the middle of the bay on the weekend with fresh squid strips. (not sure how true it is) i reckon a couple of quite sessions is worth it if you end up hooking something like that during winter. at 52cm it would have weighd in at 3kg.
  12. Tan The Man, that is absolute gold mate, my hat goes off to you. my pet hate is ciggarettes. Seriously smoke YOURSELF to death but leave the environment out of it.
  13. i was fishing botany bay near the oil wharf and a seal swam winthin 30cm(no joke 30cm you could literally pat it but we didnt) of my boat. like you i thought i was seeing things i also thought it was rubbish or something. this thing was a mighty beast swimming casually on it back with its arms in the air happily blowing bubbles. it looked like it weighed a good 120kg+. now i thought i hit the jackpot the other day when in the same place a pod of about 20 dolphins passed by us but id say this tops it. i have a picture on my mates camera that i could probably get sent to me if anyone needs proof or just wants to have a look.
  14. a bit of work on the boat - fishfinder - rocket launchers - new nav lights its a great time to get the boat raring to go for spring.
  15. Three-headed fish at Queensland hatchery09:30 AEST Mon Jul 13 Jul 13, 2009 A mutant three-headed fish has been found at a fish hatchery on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Half of all mullets bred at the Sunland Freshwater Fish Hatchery in spawning events on July 5 and 6 showed cell abnormalities, the Brisbane Times reports. Some of the fish, bred from seven mullets taken from Noosa River, had two heads and a single mullet fry was reportedly found with three heads. Queensland authorities already investigating mass fish deaths and deformities linked to the Noosa River ecosystem said they will include this latest incident in their inquiry. This is the second batch of mutant fish to appear at Sunland, after the discovery of two-headed bass larvae sparked a Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries inquiry last year. Sunland hatchery owner Gwen Gilson said her business was "going down the tubes". She suspects that chemicals sprayed at a nearby macadamia farm are to blame for the genetic defects and spike in fish deaths at her hatchery, at Boreen Point. "All the neighbours are scared when they hear the tractors [spraying chemicals]," she was quoted by The Sunshine Coast Daily as saying. "[The farm] does not have to tell us when they are doing it." Department authorities will conduct tests on these latest mutant eggs and embryos as well as some of the seven mullets used to breed the abnormal specimens. Last month authorities released an interim report saying it was "possible" chemical sprays are behind the fish deaths and deformities — which have also been discovered at other breeding sites linked to Noosa River — but could not identify which chemical may be at fault. Ms Gilson said it is hard keeping up with the number of fish samples that biosecurity authorities require for testing and she reckons not all fish hatcheries are complying either. "We are the only ones handing over information — but if you only have half the data how can you work out what's happening?" she was quoted by the Coast Daily as saying.
  16. Hey Raiders, i am going to hit up botany bay and lower georges on the weekend and i was just wondering if anyone had had some luck in the area latley? approx what spots? even if you didnt catch much im still interested in hearing your thoughts on the area at the moment? last time i went out was about three weeks ago and the action only picked up in the last half of the run in tide aroung captains cook bridge.(when i say action i mean barely legal bream/baby snapper and whiting that were all returned) it looks like it will be run in tide again when i get out there. also ive heard some crazy stories about heaps of school jew being caught at the moment around sydney? i havnt seen ant so far this winter ALL advice is appreciated. thanks in advance. Cheers.
  17. i caught a numbray in the hacking once, luckily i didnt touch it cos it was ugly and i usually dont touch rays because lets face it if one of them managed to take down steve irwin then i have no chance. i didnt know they could do damage to us the look pretty harmless.
  18. once i took my mate fishing and he bought cooked prawns from the supermarket, after laughing at him and paying him out all morning he ended up catching twice as many fish. oops.
  19. thanks for the responses. very nice i wouldnt complain if i manage to land a salmon. ill be boating it. where did u get your salmon? these salmon are different from the $50kg salmon at the fish shop yeah? do they cook up well?
  20. hi raiders, i was considering having a in one of my favorite waterways the Hacking this weekend hopefully. i did a search on the hacking in the last month and didnt find much, i was just wondering if anyone has the word on how its fishing at the moment? have you been in the last couple of weeks?? how did you go?? good or bad reports are both appreciated. cheers
  21. hey raiders, this is my first year fishing in winter. now i usually do well in summer ie. atleast a couple of nice keeper fish per trip. however in the last month or so i havent gotton anything i keep hearing of all the thumper bream and heaps of trevally, but if they are there i cant catch them, i even tried chicken parmesan. i havnt even seen a leatherjacket for a couple of weeks. i went to the bay on sunday and all we got were extreme small snapper a 50cent peice would be rivaling them for weight and tiny whiting . now if it were warm then i wouldnt mind going on a dry spell but it is bloody freezing and the only thing keeping me going is the fish which there seems to be a lack of? can anyone tell me if i need to change my techinique(some hints would be handy)? maybe a change of bait i dont know? i want to know how to get some of the winter bream action, is there any particular spots around georges river, botany bay or port hacking that you would recommend??? im at a bit of a loss at what to do i may have to consider calling it quits for july untill spring is near hell ill even take a couple of leather jackets as a successfull trip at the moment. any advise would be appreciated. cheers
  22. i really like this idea, i may have to steal it and use it myself.
  23. it says on the signs in the georges (idle speed)
