  6. Hi Raiders, i need some advice, i bought a garmin fishfinder 90 the other day, its pretty standard but im just putting it on my tinny (quintrex 395 dart) for the hacking and georges river so it should do. i bought it pretty cheap and was quoted a price to install it however the installation price has risen substantially and well i cant justify paying someone that sort of coin for what seems a pretty standard job and i love working on my boat. so i have done a bit of research and have a fair idea of how we are going to install it but i am worried about where to put the transducer because if its not in the right place the sounder wont work properly. can anyone give me some advise or tips on where exactly to put it??? the other question i have is i will need a battery can anyone reccomend a battery??? it will be used for the fish finder and possibly some nav lights a bit further down the track. ill need one that can charge at home and lasts a good amount of time running the fishfinder and lights??? can anyone reccomend the type of battery im looking for and where i might get one. also when doing the wiring can i just hook the wires onto the battery or is it something more complicated than that?? any and all advise is appreciated. Cheers Deano.
  7. that is the best whiting i have ever seen by a long way. well done
  8. Now thats a croc very well done. what a beast. Cheers Deano
  9. Best Jew bait going around. too good of a bait to eat i reckon, straight into the freezer ready for a jew session.
  10. i am a bay regular and have a 4m tinny, i would give it a go because you can always head up the georges if it does get uncomfortable and it could be argued that the river is fishing better than the bay at the moment anyways. hope this helps Cheers Deano
  11. i was just looking to get out before sun up, i dont seem to catch jews after sun up. i went to the same spot last nite and the action was red hot and my mate hooked onto a jew that looked as big as the one avalon showed me but we dropped it by the side of the boat it somehow snapped his 10kg leader. it was the biggest fish ive ever seen live. mate live or fresh squid are the go for jews they cant resist a big chunk of fresh squid. as they say a good jew fisherman is firstly a good squid fisherman, i however am neither.
  12. hey madmullet, i reckon stick it out in the bay, you just have to fish where the silt is not heavily flowing for example on the run in tide i fished yarra bay and it was very clean because it was getting flushed with the clean water coming in from the heads, and caught a big flatty at that. but when i was at the airport the water was filthy. also ive noticed the bay hasnt really started firing up yet its still in winter fishing mode so maybe thats where your slow catch rate has been coming from(unfortunate timing). either way its alwys good to find other spots but dont give up on the bay just yet there is still alot of promise for the summer even if it is somewhat hampered by the work they are doing. i reckon give the hacking a go closer to summer because you can get some real great catches there also its amazing how much it changes in the summer months. well thats my 2 cents cheers Deano.
  13. Mate i own a 395 dart and the max recommended hp is 30 in the specs and im pretty sure its on the builders plate. hope this helps cheers Deano
  14. haha yeah it was you, what are the chances? i just saw your report very well done, great minds think alike. my mate and i were very gealous and happy for you.
  15. Hello Raiders, plan was to hit the port hacking with my old man(he is an old school fisho whos been out of the game a while) however after looking for a bait shop for that no longer existed but he insisted was there , we scrapped the plan and headed to tom uglys bridge and went out intro the bay where my next surprise was that half the bay was blocked from the work they are doing there. Anyway we headed up to the airport and threw in a line but it wasnt very successful and i noticed the water was almost brown (probably from the work they are doing) so we headed into yarra bay where the water was much cleaner and after bouncing my plastic around for about half an hour i pulled up this beast, some of you may remember my report two weeks ago about breaking my drought and pulling up a big flatty, well the drought stayed broken and this one was even bigger a quick measure had her at about a healthy 69cm and she was even fatter, had a head like a shovel. caught her on a squidgey 70mm shad in ginger beer and on my new plastics rod so not a bad first fish for my new rod. we sent her back to fight another day. after and high fives all round we noticed the wind had picked up but we stuck it out for about another half an hour, we then decided it was getting worse not better so we had a nice bumpy ride across the bay. stopped at the bridge where my old man caught a little bream (i was determined to stick it out untill he caught a fish) we then headed back to the car and when we took the boat out of the water my trailer tyre inner tube had broken so my old man ran around for over an hour trying to get it fixed while i got to sit at the ramp with my boat, hmmm i was annoyed to say the least. all in all i cant complain though still a good day. On Sunday 19/09 a mate and I decided to try for a jew at como. we decided the best time of the morning and set off without a minute to spare, however on arrival at como boat ramp we found that there was no water to launch the boat into because it was the bottom on the tide, so we trekked to tom uglys again and thought ok we still have maybe an hour of prime jew time so maybe first cast. however we showed up to our spot to discover it was taken, we set up behind the bloke who was using the spot and noticed a few times a bit of commotion in his boat and after the sun came up we decided to try somthing different but we drove past the bloke on the way just to see how he went. well he showed us a jew that would have had to have been close to the metre mark all we could do was laugh we couldnt help but feel it could have been us. anyway we headed to kurnell and got ourselves some squid for next weekend when we will try for a jew again. hey atleast seeing what he did confirmed that our plan was not a waste of time and we are oh so close. so thats it a weekend of mess around, near miss and a huge flatty. its funny how fast fishing fortune can turn. Hope to be writing a jew report next week, untill then. Cheers Deano
  16. Marine scientists have chanced their arm to save a shark that was choking on fishing tackle. The 2.5m endangered grey nurse shark was found off Byron Bay, and was too weak to resist capture after getting a knot of fishing tackle stuck down its throat. Marine scientists said the shark was 25kg underweight having not eaten for months, with its lower jaw so weak it was no longer functioning properly. The Sea World experts inserted a plastic pipe down the shark's throat to prevent injury from its rows of razor-sharp teeth and removed the blockage. "It's about a third under its body mass, so it's quite severely debilitated," said Sea World spokesman Trevor Long. "The animal's got to be able to have a functioning jaw if it's going to be able to survive in the wild." He said the team was "flying blind a bit" until X-rays were conducted to determine the extent of the shark's injuries. The shark did not appear to be in pain, though it was a bit frustrated. The sickly shark is one of only about 500 grey nurse sharks remaining along Australia's east coast. The species is listed as endangered under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, having been hunted almost to extinction. Grey nurse sharks breed only once every three years, usually giving birth to either one or two pups.
  17. A man has died and two other men have been injured after a small boat was washed by freak waves onto rocks on the Sunshine Coast. A police spokesman said officers received a call about 10.10am (AEST) on Thursday that an accident had occurred near Port Cartwright. Three men were brought in to Buddina Pocket Beach by surf lifesavers. Lifesavers and paramedics conducted CPR on one man but he died at the scene. Two other men were taken to Nambour hospital in a stable condition. It is understood a fourth person was also on the boat. Water police are attending the scene. No other details were immediately available.
  18. good work on some nice lizards again mate . yeah hopefully it is ready to fire i think the water temp is def heating up (i go off a hand in the water measurement, not to reliable), hopefully ready to fire for the bay social in two weeks. Cheers Deano.
  19. she fought pretty well, it was hard getting her off the bottom and she made a fair bend in the rod just from the weight alone i knew i was on to largish flatty. but when my mum caught the 40cm model she thought she just had a bit of a snag untill i told her that sea weed doesnt usually have headshakes. haha yeah thanks mate. i didnt quite stick to the plan but it worked out very well anyway. you should have been out there it was an absolute beauty of a day, a taste of summer.
  20. yeah they are big meaty fellas not at all cute and cuddly like in the movies. Peter that is gold

  23. Hello Raiders, i decided to hit the water on sunday seeing as it was such a wonderfull day with my old lady. we were doing a little drift and i was throwing aroung some squidgey soft plastics (poddy mullet 5cm) and on our first drift i pulled up this monster which was the highlight of the day. now this has been my first winter fishing and i havent caught a decent fish since autumn so what a way to break the drought. i am also quite pleased because i wanted a good fish to show on my small milestone of 100posts. a quick measure had him at just over 65cm, and he was fat felt like about 3kg?? i let this beast go to fight another day. i am hoping that she rears her head again for the back to the bay social maybe with a bit more size to her. after this we caught a few smaller flatties and mum pulled in her first legal one (42cm) since she has been fishing again (used to be a oldschool fisherwoman) and she was quite happy and we ended up having the best day on the water for a long time but we called it quits after about 3 hours since none of the fish could compare to the first flatty of the day, they seemed small. Cheers Deano
