Heading to Avoca tomorrow for a fish, can someone tell me which part of the beach is the best to fish? I have kids so preferably something with a minimal walk. Many Thanks.

What about a Saltiga Surf 30 for the reel? 10ft is wayyyyyy too short for the beach, at least 12ft even up to 13'6". It's gotta be tough something like an 8144 or better.

I fished the Parra friday arvo from 5-9pm with only a few small pickers at baits and not even a run. Was using squid, pillies and mullet. Half my baits never even got a looker. Came back in as fresh as they went out.

Just remember it's illegal to return them to the water, you need to destroy them humanely.

The paternoster is a great rig for almost every occasion not just the beach. The paternoster will work great in the river and lake mac and swansea channel. If your fishing in an area with huge current, try going for the twisted dropper over the basic dropper loop will help the bait stand off the main line a little better and avoid some tangles.

There are some great rods in the Shimano Backbone range. I have owned a BB70 which cost me like $80 for 6 years now and it just keeps on taking all the crap I give it.

I'd suggest the Starlo Stix Heavy Shore Spin. $119 and will take 10kg line weight no problems. The length is just perfect as well.

Slinky got it right, the best rig for the surf is the paternoster with either a single or double dropper. Use either a snapper lead, star sinker or beach sinker on the end and keep your droppers about 30cm apart. I normally throw a double with a mullet strip on each or a single with a whole pillie. Sometimes you can use a whole small squid on each or beachworms. Very versatile. You can even throw two different baits. My reccommendation is to use a quality ball bearing swivel above the rig.

If all else fails, a deep cycle battery hooked up to two metal prongs!!! *BZZZZZZZZZ* Just kidding.... but winter can sometimes be very rewarding OR very frustrating. Just stick at it and as Swordfisherman said, fish deep.

And that's why he is the secretary and not the President! Good with money, not sense! I would reckon that 98% of Luderick are caught during daylight hours, or nearabouts. In fact they are one of the most reliable daylight species you can catch.

Most heavy jigging outfits use at least a 14000 size reel or above. 8000 might be a little small. If you hook a decent fighting fish and it takes a run you want the comfort of having reasonable line capacity. Don't forget you can drop down to the Spheros from the Saragosa and save a few dollars. Have you considered an overhead for the jigging etc rather than a spinning reel?

Simmo I am about to start blackie fishing this week too so maybe after a few weeks of practice we can catch up for a fish! I am going to buy my weed from the bait shop on the highway at Bakehurst they had weed the other day that looked ok.

A waterskiier is just another term for a trolled live bait !!!! Watch out for the jackets and pelagics.

The third runway is named that because it is indeed the 3rd runway at Kingsford Smith. You have 2 x north/south runways (16R/34L & 16L/34R) and an east/west runway (07/25). The third runway is the one closest to Foreshore Drive, not the one on the Brighton side.

Went down to Fairy Meadow for some fresh fruit and veggies and on the way back the sight of a calm ocean and empty rocks means I HAD to have a fish (conveniently left the outfit in the car). Grabbed a bag of frozen prawns, not the best bait but started peeling them and throwing the heads and shells into the little section I was going to fish. I caught 6 drummer in an hour none which were legal but the ocean was glass, with no swell and barely any whitewater. I'll be back again soon when the swell picks up.

I had an impromptue session today using peeled frozen prawns for dummer, only got baby ones. Going to prepare more for next trip and I am keen to get some using bread. Do they really take bread as easily as the peeled prawns??

Smitty, I gave her a run today down at Austinmer rocks for some drummer, only small ones no legals but I will ill prepared with no berley (spur of the moment thing - we actually went grocery shopping!) Since I got it I have landed my PB bait bream and a stonker flattie, lovely reel.

I saw plenty of stainless steel backed ones when I went looking. I ended up with one! Just be prepared to pay a little extra for them.

Bought my first pack of 1/0 circle hooks today for using with the bream and fished with mullet strips. First cast and my first ever bream on a circle hook. He took the bait and hooked himself, didn't even feel him bite! I'll definately be using them from now on. Oh and it was my first ever fish on an Alvey too! My new 650c5. A day of firsts.

Just keep in mind what Mondo said, gutters can be like the fish, there one day and gone the next, they are forever changing and evolving so always grab a high spot to look from at your local beach and locate the gutters before heading down to the ground.
