  2. but dont you need 3 phase power for it? as they run on 10amps to 40amps? a standard power outlet wont draw that much. Please advise.
  3. been there done that, cant help unfortunately. Thanks anyway

    Project Boat

Gents, ok i have a work colleague who has inherited this 1970s/80s Steber craft glass boat with a massive 9.9hp. mind you it was purchased brand new by his uncle, it was used and is in very good condition. As you can see in some of the pics, it is tiller steer with a custom home job steering cable set up, that is no where near safe, but i dont know how you can steer and sit at the front unless someone was giving you throttle at the back Anyhow, since it owes him all but NOTHING, he is looking to do the following. Get rid of the 9.9hp and replace it with a 30-50hp motor. What do you guys recommend, is 50hp too much? He wants enough power to potentially tube, and get upto 50km/h or a tad more... would that be safe in a 4m approx boat? With the new engine, get a whole new steering set up, steering wheel and cable, plus a new plate for the transom. Currently has a 20litre portable fuel tank, and was thinking of putting a tank up the front of the boat to even the weight, and put a 40-50litre tank. Or should he keep te tank at the back? Then finally, minor things like repaint the boat sides to black, rename the boat, put all items on a 5 panel switch + cigarette lighter (nav + anchor light, bilge, cabin lights and 1 spare). Then last but not least, replace the seats and put 2 nice seats at the front, and a lounge seat at the back with 2 speakers and a CD deck. What do you guys think? Getting into a big project, or is it worth while? I have told him to expect to pay $6k roughly.
  6. i usually check seabreeze for sydney metro offshore and bom.gov.au, and foxtel weather channel. i have seen boats at the FADS that are 16ft, but conditions were ideal. Its one of those things, play it by ear and common sense, if its rough out there as your heading out, head back in, and don't go out on windy days on that size boat.
  7. farrrrkkkkkkk who fed those kings? Fat lil buggers.
  8. hmmm tough issue,by laws can get nasty. In this case, you should have researched into parking/storing a boat in community title area. Most people on strata/community committees LOVE politics in a non political way. They get there weekly HIGH enforcing strata law. Im a real estate agent, and i have seen them in action, and also unfortunately some of them coping a hail mary to the chin and put to rest for a while. (but thats not the best way to sort out your issues). Firstly, before buying you should have read those nasty strata and community By laws. In short, i would say you will not win the case if it went to court/tribunal. But before that, where exactly do you park your boat. On the street? Your front yard? In the driveway? If its common property, then yeah you are breaching the by laws. I assume you bought a land & house package in those nice little communities where its so green and pretty, but yet they screw the shit out of you if you have a toy / boat / caravan. By laws are nasty, and in this case, i think you will lose. BUT, when you go to the tribunal just state the facts, boat doesn't fit in garage, there is NO allocated parking area for boats / caravans in the estate which could be considered as a restriction, there is no restriction to the size of boat you could have, and maintain the previous strata allowed boats to be parked on the street/common property. Try this, ask strata if you can modify the garage to FIT the boat, when they say no, then go to tribunal and say you tried to resolve the issue, they objected, now what?
  9. just go get the multi hand gun from bunnings for $5. The jet spray is suffice for my boat. You dont want to be straining your paint and stickers. Hose it, sponge it with soap, wash it off. Simple.
  10. well done dazza... the 39cm is a stonker and stands out from the rest. I must say, saturday i was out in the morning and fish were on the bite... kings, big salmon (altho they are poo), bream, tailor and trevallies seems like saturday was a good day out of the lot... lets hope it keeps going
  11. geee.. if i am correct and read correctly, all these bad weather stories are from botany bay and not many from sydney harbour... Does anyone have any good stories out at sea? A friend of mines family are in the trawling business and he has told me stories to make me not want to go to sea, but then i guess when you are out at sea for 5 days straight, catching fish for a living, you have to stick through thick and thin to earn your $$$... The best story he told me was one night a few years, 100km + offshore, 5m seas and strong winds the boat was taking on water and getting pushed about. From this, it caused them to move off course and there net got caught. Being unable to move took on a lot of water. There emergency water pumps did not work and at this stage they had taken on that much water the boat was bound to go within an hour if they did not cut there net, but costing $**,**** of dollars, it is a last resort they were about to do. Luckily for them a nearby trawler came to there aid within 30mins, although he said it was hard for them to get close, managed to get them a few pumps, and slowly but safely pumped there water out. Then the skipper got back to trying to turn the boat around and get the nets out. They did manage to get the nets out, and found a hole in the boat. The story had more to it, but that was the best short way to sum it up. Everytime i see him, i ask him for a new story, and it is amazing what you see, catch and hear about at sea. Never forget the washing machine they collected 30km off sydney haha
  12. fishlexi.. i know what you mean... I did the slow trip from north head to long reef, move around for zip. Back to quarantine and ended up with 3 kings 67-71cm, one sick salmon at 90cm plus few others from 50-65cm, big bream and trevalli all in 1.5hrs fishing. Regretting going to long reef. However, seabreeze was a bit off for saturday saying seas under a metre and swell 1.5 to 2m. The seas were pretty close to flat. Anyhow...
  13. nathan, the bungs were always on my mind till i launched one day and realised my boat was sinking. With quick thinking saved it. Triple check bungs! Enjoy your rig!
  14. Trailer City. I had the same problem. Went there.. I think for $50-$60 you get a new galvanised winch post with a support bracket for extra strength and 2 U bolts. Trailer City Rydalmere - Look em up
  15. framedtrash... good question but i have the answer. Apart of my design was i wanted the bait tank removable for when i need motor servied. The bait tank is removable. He made a frame around it to support the tank when full of, and from the aerial shot you can see it is lipped. At the bottom there is a bolt to hold it in position, and whenever i want it out, i undo the bolt, then lift the tank out. (look at one of the photos attached). However, when driving to the ramp, i can trim the motor up enough to drive and use a perfectly cut piece of wood to hold it in place. Or, if you like you can make the tank not so thick, but make it wider instead, but better to have a removable tank just incase motor needs major work done. Even my boat mechanic thought it was very unique and definitely a great invention. Couple more pics.
  16. i bought a baitmate board. I must say, for a guy based in bris, me in syd, going off a hand drawing, he made the board spot on. Everyone that comes on my boat cannot believe how perfect it is. Knife storage, sinkers/hook tray, a drawer, livebait tank and drain.
  17. craig, nearest fad is on the site above. YOu can see land. I would say its around 7km offshore. Cruising at 8-10knotts took me about 30mins. On a good day you can gun it there. I havent heard of many great fish catchers there this season, the dollies ahve been caught at 90fathoms.

    Build Quality

I second DDDave. Anyone who has been on my stacer will know its a tough little rig. I dont back off full throttle going through wake off Rivieras, or out the heads i punch thru sea swell. (i know i sound like a hoon, but its good to test the joints). If you have been reading my posts, i just replaced the floor, and checked all the welds no cracks whatsoever. Boats still in one piece and now 9 years old. If you are looking to spend around the stacer/quintrex/ally craft range, these are good little rigs. If you can afford more, go for the Stessl, Bar Crusher or noble boats. Do your own homework, and dont let anyone else do it for you by reading their posts/comments.
  19. capt snoopy. i live near you. I went to trailer city at rydalmere. They have everything galvanised and well priced. They are cheaper than all. I got a set of 7 leaf springs with new U bolts and all screws for around $105. 7 leaf are rated for 800ish kg each, so thats 1.6t They have it all. Ring them for a price 9638 7919
  20. KEFLAPOD, gee you must be a solicitor or someone in politics. Choice of words for a fishing shit is second to none haha Anyhow, i think the majority would keep a big fish caught of that species. There are NOT if ANY amateur fishermen, fishing on the weeks off their boat that costs them money to use, plus bait, plus fuel, plus rods/reels, that would catch a 12kg king, 8kg flatty or 12kg jewfish, and would drop the fish back into the drink. I know most would get the camera and esky ready. Anyhow, each to their own.
  21. keflapod, fair point but each to their own. Its the same case for marlin, most if not all catch and release so the next fisho can enjoy, but the odd time someone lands a a huge PB and wants to keep it, or gets a small one perfect for the bbq. No law on catching a fish TOO big. I wish i had that problem hahaha
  22. wherea bouts you land the snappers?
  23. Thanks Huey. I actually went and purchase CD structural plywood. I know have to purchase the appropriate epoxy / gelcoat to protect the surface. What product do you guys recommend i use? I was told to use international HT9000 epiglass epoxy resin Part A and B (hardener) and mix some thinner to make it more liquid like so the timber can absorb the product and apply 4 to 5 coats. Would this be suffice?
  24. dave B... i have been told to use HT 9000 EPI Glass with hardener and add thinners number 7 and give 3 to 4 coats. What timber do you recommend i use... marine ply or CV ply? and where to get marine ply?
  25. hey spic when you replaced the floor and carpet, did you create any new hatches / access points for underfloor storage? If you did, do you think the timber would bow once exposed to sun and water/moisture? I see you used marine ply, did you coat it with marine estapol for extra protection?
