  1. hey guys, just needed some quick advice. I have a great size fishing area on my stacer, and sick of those fishing trips where everything is everywhere and we are tripping over trying to move about. I have so much room underneath the floor i have decided to replace carpet + create some hatches to store below. The current floor id say is at least 8 years old, and i tried cutting one of the large boards to create a hatch, but the floor has bowed since pretty bad and is a tripping hazard, so i have screwed it down. Now the question i have is if i but the appropriate marine grade ply, and cut that to create hatches, will it bow and buckle once exposed to water and sun? Or because its new it will hold its shape? PS - What timber should i use? Marine ply or ply wood painted with marine enamel coating?
  2. dogtooth, great catch. Looks pretty flat the seas, how was it out there?
  3. hey champ, so i assume you caught the kings trolling or did you stop and drop the yakkas down? If trolling, were the yakkas deep, or near the surface travelling about 3-4knotts? Sorry to sound confusing but just curious, last week at bluefish i had a yakka out on the surface, and coped a good hit and snapped my rod holder (plastic).

    Selling Boat

bar up - it deoends on your price range? If its a trailer boat, and under $25/$30k give it a go. If its $50k then maybe look at option 2. But generally, boats between $15k-$25k move when well priced for the package and condition it is in.
  5. dogtooth, lucky you noticed him... i often see guys scaling the rocks at bluefish, but at the obvious location where the absailing rope is (if you call it that). If you didn't notice him i wonder if anyone would have, no shirt on on a caramel coloured rock. Otherwise, he would have been burley
  6. mate id let it go. i would not pay more than $10k for that. Like the rest have said, i used to own a 99 4.75m ally craft with a 50hp, and was not good at getting on the plane. Like the rest have said a 60-70hp would be ideal. Keep your eye out, plenty more will come on the market its just a matter of time and patience. PS. Changing the axle, servicing wheel bearings, new ball bearing kit, grease, new wheel nuts, leaf springs U bolts, if your lucky doing it yourself you could get it done for $500ish. Getting someone else $700ish. I might be wrong, but parts alone when i did mine was $400 with no axle. Allow for another $1000
  7. hey get the net... where abouts did you catch it and how deep was the water/temp? spewing. we were going to go out sunday but canned it due to BOM prediction of heavy rain... yeah at 5pm.
  8. fisherking i asked the same question before i went up there a month back. A local said the carpark changes each year. But apparently marlin are being caught 1km north east of broughton island and upto 15km out. Carpark is at the continental shelf (50 odd kms away) no need to go that far for marlin. The fads have produced a few blacks and a few blue marlin. Speak to golden eagle he lives up there he told me friday they are catching upto 5 a day (blues and blacks). I assume you are chasing marlin
  9. anthonym, firstly take into account a few important items. What is the changeover from your old 60hp to a new 60hp? What will it cost for a new trailer? If lets say your boat is worth today $10k (you paid $20k 5 years ago), and replacing engine/trailer will cost another $10k on top, therefore owes you $30k, then that means you are out of pocket $20k. Would it be better off selling your rig and getting a new one? I went thru the same as you, wanted a new larger motor (90hp to 120hp), fix my trailer and so on. But the cost of doing that was $15k all up (as a 2nd hand motor most dealers tend to think your motor is worth $1) i was better off selling my rig and getting a new one. If you love your boat, fair enough, but going 60hp to 60hp when you already have a good mechanically sound engine to save $15 a trip of fuel, thats a hell of a lot of fuel to use to justify $6-$7k changeover. In terms of engine brands, i looked at the cost of maintaining and repairing a motor BEYOND warranty period (3 years time), and by far, mercury is cheapest to maintain in replacing genuine parts. The japanese motors are very expensive. Don't be afraid of new Direct Injection 2 strokes, they are bloody awesome. A mate of mine travelled 220km on his 5.7m cruise craft with a 150hp etec and only used 55litres of fuel. 2stroke. Anyway, thats my thoughts, i hope i dont offend.
  10. Hey guys, well after planning a nice day out for australia day, half way through the harbour my engine cuts out (01 Mercury 90hop 2stroke carby saltwater series). Not sure what caused it, so i restart my engine and back underway. Anyway about 1km later, i cant exceed 4000rpm (usually get close to 6000rpm) Then after a km on 4000rpm it clicked to me it may be no 2stroke oil. (i am sure i had plenty prior to my last trip). Being stuck under the harbour bridge bouncing around i had no time to get the engine cover off, so i quickly topped it up and on i went. Seemed fine then not long after back to the same problem. For the rest of the day could not exceed 4000rpm, sounds like it is running on 2 cylinders. Has anyone here ever experienced this problem running out of 2 stroke oil, and what damage could i have caused to my engine before i go to a boat mechanic. The oil sensor didnt go off either btw (if there is one). On my previous boat it use to beep like it was about to explode when it was low. Please help and feel free to pm me. Thanks guys.
  11. I dont think you can compare recreational fishos to commercial fishing boats. They throw in a catch upto 1000 illegal sized fish overboard on each net catch, whereas your everyday recreational fisherman would throw upto 20 illegal sized a day, give or take. I was lucky to have gone on a commercial boat once, and they amount of fish they net is an unbelievable site when they get the right spot and school. They should look at how american trawlers release their illegal catch (like on deadliest catch), a chute thats like a slippery dip, they just push the crabs to that side of the sorting table and back to sea they go relatively unharmed.
  12. samson fish are actually part of the king fish family, along with trevalis. They almost look like a port jackson shark just before they surface
  13. top pic rick... it looks like they are huge fans of peter garrett... Soon mako sharks might do the same thing, come to the shallows in clans for a tan
  14. mercer, i bet you will never forget to put the bungs in again. Add it to your pre launch safety check ( i have done it too dont worry). As for fishing, keep at it and you will christen the boat soon enough.
  15. Guys on the weekend was chatting with another keen fisho family friend who is a mad keen fisho. Over xmas/new year break at longreef wide they hooked on a one of these beasts to their suprise, took 300-400m of line in a few mad furious runs and a jump and they lost it. (they were targeting kings with slimy macks and yakkas). The first run it seemed like it was a salmon or rat king with the fish only taking a bit of line, but then when they striked they couldnt believe the powerful runs it took and they knew it had to be either a good king or shark, but were completely shocked when a marlin was seen exiting the water then loosing it after a good 300-400m of line were dispensed from a tld 25 on 15kg line. Last christmas i witness another boat hooking on a marlin 1km offshore in sydney. Left after 45mins as i knew they were in for a long haul.
  16. I have used taplin park / drummoyne ramp. Finally a local council has used the american boat ramp design and we have a ramp with a loading dock like facility where you do not need to drive your boat on/off and can easily launch / retrieve by yourself. Becareful of the sand bars on either side when trying to take off especially on the single lane side, seen a few boats get caught in it. Secondly, the most annoying part is the sign says clearly TRAILER parking only, yet you still have imbosiles parking their car there. Out of the 30 odd parking spots on average 10 are used up by cars. Then comes the problem when the boat owner has to park his car on the street, some 500m-1km away and have angry residents having a trailer/car at the front of their house.
  17. I know this is the worse time of year to needing urgent trailer bits and pieces, but got stuck at the ramp today when the unexpected happened. Winch post snapped and i just kept it alive with heavy duty chain. But took me 1 hour to get the boat out of the water. Thanks to NO ONE helping. Anyway, i have tried whitworths and bias, dont seem to stock them, anyone know of any boat trailer suppliers where i can get a trailer winch post? Please advise. Cheers
  18. jim77, i read your first post about how there measuring device said 64cm and the fisheries chart said 65cm. You should have maybe queried them and asked how do they know there measuring device was accurate? These days these devices are made in china (bunnings sell measuring tape that are cheap) and i have also been a victim of using a cheap measuring tape and been out quite a bit on my carpentry work. anyhow, glad the officers used there brain... and i agree, if they want to make real money, go to north and south heads on the harbour and catch those guys taking the rats
  19. 1 metre deep water... hmmm I have known of great whites in shallow water, but not that shallow. I think i might head down with my thannus this avo
  20. Holy crap, that fish musta had a wild night in town one night with the wrong fish I havent seen parasites like that in a jew fish before... When you say quarantine, you mean north head sydney harbour yeh?
  21. samson fish is what it is, and is actually part of the king fish family (as you can tell by the similarities in the body contour (as well as trevali)
  22. Hey guys, new to this site after joining recently. Been fishing for a few years now and onto my second boat. I have rigged the new boat ready for outfront action as well as estuary. With new overheads and spinning reels, i was caught at the local fishing shop looking at lures thinking which one to get and what weight. I will be hitting the peak, the hump, colours, bluefish point, the traps targeting kings, snapper, tailor and alike species. What lures can you guys recommend and weights for trolling and jigging? I have usually only used live baits and frozen baits, and want to try using lures. Any help would be great. I will try post some pics of my catches in the past.
  23. nice tailor there for a midday run, usually we get them at sunrise / sunset. one thing i noticed, they taste better if when you catch them you cut there throat to bleed them, it realises there amonia... just a thought
  24. Hey guys, first time post, finally. I was just wondering where in the harbour is good to get prawns and whens best? I was thinking near birkenhead point near the sailing club, there should be a run out of prawns there... anyone know a good place they could suggest to try? It will be off a boat of course. I have all the gear, as i am a regular to the entrance for prawning. And what tide / moon is best cheers
