I have been quietly enjoying my " fillets of freshly caught tailor cooked with green curry" for some time. Tailor has been one of fish I can count on off the beach.
Tailor is one of the reasons I use big hooks (3/0 up) and heavy leaders. Leader weight has been upgrading all those time, been through 20,40,60 and now normally I use 80 pound when night falls.
Not a bad result either especially with a whiting to 34 cm! I have not caught a legal whiting off the beach for the last 5 years, so to my standard, it is a great result!

Fished Wanda beach from 6:30pm to about 10:00pm last Saturday. Total tally is 6 legal tailors, two undersized tailors released, 2 healthy salmons released, 1 deep gut hooked salmon kept and used for bait. I also caught a good blue spotted flathead.
Most of the tailors were caught before 8:30pm. Salmons came later. I used pilchards. The salmon fillet l switched to after 9:00pm did not get a touch.
The beach was really packed. There would be still around 10 people there when I left.

I seem to remember I also saw this type of bug (Doctor???) in the mouth of yellow tail I caught off the rocks in coppacabana. The thing looks freaky in the photo.
There was a lot of birds (~200) about 200 m south of the cake about 3-5 pm yesterday. They buzzed around for more than one hour. There must be something happening underneath. No boat around that area at that time though.
RexSenior, my condition is called ATF "addicted to fishing " I don't seem to have come across any cure through reading almost all posts on this site.
No I have not tried shovel nose but have seen people selling some sort of shark fillets that looked like from shovel nose to me as they are all thin strips.
First cast, lost the bait without feeling any bite, second cast, the bream, followed by one fish a cast in the next 4 casts in the sequence of salmon, blind shark, shovel nose, salmon. The salmons were about 65cm but at the slim side.
Failed to suppress the urge to go for a fishing after finishing the birthday dinner for my son, I got to the beach @ 9:00 pm knowing I had only about one hour for the session. Was it a correct decision! I took only 6 re-frozen pilchards with me and with these I actually landed 5 fish within 6 casts. The fish came home with me is a 43 cm bream, happened to be a PB, exceeding my previous PB by 4 cm. all other fish were released and got home 10 to 11pm.

I practiced this technique when fishing off the beaches and landed quite a few big fish (bronze whaler or eagle ray though). There were two times the 30lb main line failed at the swivel (excessive wearing?) and now I will switch to 50lb main line and 80 lb leader when fishing the beaches at night.
I can feel landing your next jewie is just around the corner!

I made three trips to our local beaches , one for each day of the long weekends. The only bite I had was a shoval nose from Wanda beach(good gutter). Maroubra beach produced nothing but weed and blue bottles and there was no gutter to be seen partially due to very low tide. Hopefully it can improve this weekend.
