  1. They are a heavy boat and can be a bit wet. But if you extend the spray chines, it seems to fix the problem.  I'm actually looking for a 4.1metre Poly at the moment. I think the pluses outweigh the negatives for me. If you damage it, most of the time all you need is a heatgun or hairdryer to repair it.

  2. I've owned a Polycraft 4.55m. You can plastic weld wider spray chines on them. This helps to displace the spray you would normally get. They are a heavier boat, 310kg for the 4.55 without outboard, but they are a soft ride and you don't need to worry about getting pounded as much as a tinny, and you don't have to worry about electrolysis or soft fibreglass.

I personally would be sticking to something like a Yamaha, Honda or Suzuki.

I've had a few mates with tohatsu and mercury. and they've had so many problems with it. Spends more time in the workshop than on water.

    Is this your first boat?

This is my second boat. But like some of you on this post, I had a Yammie as well and loved it. That's why I'm not sure about the Merc

I know you did mate.I wasn't having a dig.....i was merely saying that in general a well looked after and maintained engine will go way beyond 300hrs.One thats been neglected?Well, thats anyones guess how much service and reliability it will provide.

As to what sellers tell you regardless if they are private or dealers, take it all with a grain of salt when it comes to buying anything used especially boats, cars etc.Ask for recent service reports, receipts and most of all do your own detective work and follow your instincts to minimise the chance of ending up with a lemon.

    Cheers.

I would always get an independent inspection anyway.

  5. G'Day Raiders,

I'm interested in a buying a secondhand boat that has a 40HP Mercury Lightning XR, 2010 or 2011 with approximately 300 hours on it. The boat looks well looked after and the owner informs me he has the motor serviced annually. My concern is I've heard some bad stories about these outboards. So, I'm putting out there to all the outboard gurus.

    Thanks

Excuse my ignorance but what is a wavebreaker?

Google came up with all sorts of things.

Thank God someone else asked the question. I thought it was just me.

  7. Dear Fellow Raiders,

I have a 40hp outboard and it appears the battery is kaput. I've tried charging it without any luck. I'm just wondering what you would recommend. I only have a sounder and standard Navigation lights to run,

    Thanks

    I used to own a Polycraft 4.55.

It was a great boat. Out in 4m seas it used to just bob above it like a cork.  Never felt unsafe are all.  Easy to clean and repair. Double hulls were great for ride comfort.

mine initially came  with a 40 Etec  but I upgraded it to the 60 which was heaps.

It is a wet boat though.  There needs to be a chine/rib or something affixed to the front to deflect water down. Some of the guys on the Polycraft forum got them welded on.  Makes a huge difference. I had a bowrider. I only sold it as we had a young son and it was impractical at the time. Wish I'd kept it

fRuItCaKe  is right, they are a great boat. I also have a 4.55 bowrider. They are a bit wet in a chop, but you don't need a kidney belt when going it. Mine's a bit under powered also, but looking to either sell it or upgrade the outboard.

    Cheers

Diesel, we didn't get a diesel CRV option here in Aust until something like 2014 unless it's a Jap import.

The front diff of a CRV are not LSD, so it's really only 1 drive wheel at the front, spin that and it then transfers to the rear which is also not a LSD so it then drives only one rear wheel.

my Mate who owns Honbits Autos wreckers in Smithfield, used to thrash the 2003 / 2005 CRVs on his 360acre property but due to the above they could not handle it, So he now has a bunch of Suzuki Vitaras which cop a hammering.

    p.s

they are great cars had one for 10yrs and only thing I spent on it was wear and tear items.

it towed my 4.4mtr tinnie and gear for a family holiday well.

Any bigger and you will find the short comings really quickly, it definitely struggled to tow my 5.4 Stacer Bowrider and all I wanted to do was move it down the road, I think my Stacer weights 1290kg plus fuel, gear and extra equipment.

Diesel came out in the 2013 model. Mines a 2015 6 speed manual.
