  1. Great looking fish, well done. Crack me up with your measuring technique. Would of been nice to know its proper length.
  2. Yeah thanks boys, after halftime things didnt far much better, another good sized mowie was landed at 47 and the smallest couta ive seen at 45cm, just shows there was cold water on the bottom. Yowie, my best m8s father owned Bronte Fish shop in the late 80s, the top selling fish was always mowies as you said marketed as deep sea bream. Always sold out! The trick to em is to bleed as soon as caught, they hold an enormous amount of blood in them. As they are a blue fish they hold iodine in their bones. When you fillet them you Must cut out the red flesh at the shoulders and completely cut out all bone and bloodline. The result a great fillet of fish that doesnt have the taste i know you are talking about. Seriously m8 if you prepare the fish properly you wont throw them back.
  3. Gday all, awesome day off Sydney today. Left the ramp early to a glass harbour and quite a few boats on the water. Reached the heads and again went north to 100M. Swell under .5M from the SE. Current running downhill at .4kn. Water is 21.4 and light blue not very clean, seems to be cold water on the botttom. Fishing has been slow all morning, still got a feed though and a nice red that went 54.5 and caught on a prawn. Still out here heading into the 40s for some flatties. Thats all so far.
  4. Gday all, great morning to be out. Bugger all swell about .5M from the east, little wind and current going .7Kn downhill Water is a bit of a mix of grren and blue areas and quite dirty visibility probably 10M down, temps varied a degree from 20-21°. Headed north out the head to 90M sun was coming up but hadnt broken the horizon yet. Got to our spot and dropped and virtually straight onto nannys. That was a good sign as the snapper are under them. Finally after plenty of throwback pests the rod gives the tell tale sign and we have our first on and into the easky spiked and on ice. Ran back to the mark as it is a very short drift less than 100M and dropped again, more nannys andso the process was repeated. Let the next one ride a little further till we hit the mud and the rod goes off. I fell something strange on and wasnt sure what it was till up, a tilefish. Bit odd for here but welcome. No sooner than that the rod bends again a solid fish and tell tale headahake of a snapper this time at 56cm. Headed back up to the top of the mark again and rod nearly gets pulled over the side, this time a slightly bigger red hits the dexk and at 62 is the last for the morning as the bite dropped off. Moved in a bit and found a couple of flatties and a mowie. Knocked the day on rhe head at 11am with a very good feed
  5. M8 some tackle shops sell specific shark blocks try ottos they may give you a place or they may have it. We go to a chicken joint off the M4, baida or something.
  6. If you love to eat your farmed salmon then 4 Corners tonight at 830pm Channel 2 is a show you must watch. Over 15 years ago i was watching a press club lunch and Dr David Suzuki gave a speech on the above. After the speech lunch is served and it consisted of a salmon cutlet. Nobody ate! Considering the fish is naturally a white fleshed fish..... I havnt eaten it since then.
  7. Knew youd bite pmsl, as if i was gunna tell em the furthest lol
  8. You dont have to go to far to shark fish. You could sit in the middle of broken bay heads to catch them. This time of year you will get pups inshore, mainly makos threshers and hammers usually between 10-40kg. The bigger females generally give birth after the gemfish season. Burley wise, much the same as rick said, just make sure its constant. You can have them at the boat in 5 min or 5 hrs lol. Beer comes in handy. As for numbers of rods out we run 2 both on ballons. One set closer to the boat the other set up to 50-100M back. And you are not a true shark fisherman if you dont swim to the closet balloon and back after 2 hrs lol
  9. Secho, lol still wanna get there. Hopefully not far off. I have a m8 that wants to fish it commercially. May find out at the end of the month if his new boat arrives. Will be doing the first trip with him so i will have a better idea on things, costs fuel etc. The main problem is getting a boat capable as the only place to run is Lord Howe or sit it out. Weather window plays a big part as its only fishable certain times of the year. Rickmarlin62 would attest to that and the needs of a Sth Pacific or Kaybee lol. Besides whoever comes is gunna need big kahunas and not be afraid of mountainous seas. I know of a recent Qld boat that went, a commercial struck bad weather and had all its front windows punched in!
  10. What a healthy fish, only complaint is you didnt grab the mako, shark cocktails as an entree to the snapper would of topped it off! If you are worried about boating a mako pm me and ill help you out. Well done on the red.
  11. Would a been a nice feed but i swapped my two for a slow roasted lamb lol, tend to give all my fish out to neighbours, friends. DezM, new wind was coming thats why we went early. Wind and current can be punishing but it can also work for you if wind is against current it holds you. I generally only use an 8 ounce snapper lead, my general rule is if it is running to fast off the bottom pack up move in to less current, 2kñ drift i cant fish.
  12. I think we had a little discussion on snapper colour and reasons in difference a while back. Report , well off sydney a little to the north in 120M. Early start due to the wind that was due to arrive and had a few other things to do before hometime. Left the ramp at 430 to a glass harbour and head yonder, water at 21 and climbing further we went. Once the sun came up the water was that blue you love to see, not quite purple but getting there. Nice rolling swell from the se.at 1.5M. Early bit of nor west that we knew would drop before it swung hopefully after. Set up just before sunrise and no sooner bait down rods go off. Quite a steady bite for the morning till the sun got a little higher than that was it, resulting in 27 fish all up, kept what you see and released the rest. All on pillies
  13. lol, Hey Scratchie these came up the lightest ive seen snapper, only one had a nice colour to it all caught over sand. Snapper on fire at the moment, early morning of bent rods. These were the better fish for the morning with plenty thrown back. All in 120M.
  14. I cracked up caught at garden island drydock 1.58M .
  15. Gday all, great morning to be out it was, untill that wind came up. Lot of life out there, whales a plenty and the mutton birds have begun but no fish. Water to the 100M line blue and at 21, go a little further blue and at 23 go further 25.5 and blue at 800M. Current seems to have dropped to around 2.5kn. Gentle rolling 1.5M se swell. All will be good when these very late winds decide to go.
  16. Gday all, well all i can say is its disgraceful out there at the moment, disgraceful wind, disgraceful current around 4.5 kn downhill and standing up along current line with up to a 3° drop on cooler side, 23° water. Not terribly blue either.
  17. Gday all, great morning to be out, thought there would be a few more boats around early on but as the day progressed notice quite a few boats outside. Had a first today, more on that later. The water at the moment is green but warm around 21° not much current about halfa knot sth. Light winds and a halfM se swell. Fished pretty close today in between the 40s and 50s and the flathead are one the chew and all in roe, so if you like a feed of BBQ flatty and roe nows the time. Mostly all blue spots our biggest at 77 but majority all 41. Plenty of red spot whiting in the mix as well find either you will get the other. Not a mowie in sight all day and only 2 35cm snapper which we let go. Plenty of fish out there at the moment. Going back to my first, the whale return is in full swing, had 8 pass today and its great to see their increase in numbers over the last few years. Today i literally caught a whale.... Its all quiet on the boat...im just pondering... the drag goes off the rod is bent to the outhouse and a massive well up of water appears next to the boat, can only be one thing a bloody whale, its taking line and appears 20M behind the boat. It then takes a dramatic 90° turn to port and comes around and disappears... ive got thoughts of moby dick and a pissed of whale that has taken a prawn and squid bait and should of gone to spec savers surfacing under us lol that dream was quickly erased after it surfaced abeam heading sth at a great rate of knots. Thats about it.
  18. Apparently it was rat city out there over the weekend little fish 5-10kg and herd a boat kept a 30kega. Same boat caught 30 odd fish released also heard of one boat playing them on bream gear water looked great and would of been fun on light gear. 400f ouside browns.
  19. Nice fish and some great shots, looks like you both had a good day. The snapper has spent time in a trap at some stage and has managed to get out, lucky it did! Thats gotta be around the 4 kilo mark.
  20. From what they are saying it seems that most of the bluefin that are over say 120kg are between 20- 25 year old fish.
  21. A recent capture of a 125kg bluefin produced a few records one for the small fry that caught it and another for the longest CSIRO Tag at liberty. Fish originally 75cm tagged in the bight. So the fish is 23odd yrs old. Next issue of Bluewater will have the story, CSIRO may have it up somewhere
  22. Several schools of sydney today. Well done mick and crew. 50s+
