  1. Top effort Kooks! awesome report, reading it kinda reminded me of my first kingie, you'll remember it for a long time...

WOW 2 years, good on you for persisting, the first one is always the hardest.

Here's to you landing even bigger ones

  2. Mate! well done on scoring the squid and king, even if it is a rat, it get's easier from here on, and hopefully that hoodie will be on the end of your line soon.

but look at the by-catch! trevs and bream, I'll take that any day! ehehhe

  3. nice squid dude, understand it was a tough day, good on you for sticking to the plan and ending up with several inkers.

but that's what you get for mucking around with these hoodlums, lock the drag, haul them outta there and then reel them in. :biggrin2:

If you didn't see how it was done on my previous video, I'll show you again this week hahaha :biggrin2:

  4. Can you please post the GPS location for the squid? :)

AHHAHA I am sure you would have come across this "new" location already. I am sure you would know ALL squid locations in the bay already! got to say though, those berkleys are pretty darn good!!!

maybe Snyder can maybe be generous enough to post his location's GPS hehehe :biggrin2:

Boat all good to take out tomorrow?

  5. Cracking effort , what area was that ? Botany bay ?

    Nice squid snyder, awesome job!

If it was the Bay, then it explains why it took me ages to get squid today, and then I lost them to 1 snag whilst downrigging and a couple to stinkin salmon, oh wells, try again next week. One positive is I found a new squidding spot :).

  6. Hi mate...we went out today and got 2 kings down rigging of moli..As for an alternative to downrigging you can use a knife jig or sinker over 400grms and simply taking the boat in and out of gear. Hope it helps

All valid suggestions but I would try and invest in a downrigger as you'll be able to put your bait at the depth of where the fish are.

Well done on the kings Dangler! How big did they go?

  7. firstly Zod, you need to get rid of Fahrenheit, mph & Feet and use the good ol metric system. Those numbers you got on the screen are just sooo confusing.

Unless you purchased an overseas model, which does not have the metric system.

Also to note that Your DSI have a fan beam left to right which will detect fish if the fish crosses the fan beam of your transducer. It is likely that when you saw fish they are abit further behind you.

Traditional Sonar has a conical beam which will detect fish in front and back and side of the transducer which will suit anchoring and vertical fishing but DSI provides a clearer picture but requires movement to scan the water column like Downrigging.

Sheesh mate! when did you become such an expert on the DSI? and why haven't you ever shared this info with me?!?!?! :biggrin2:

  8. hi mate, isn't fishing just so much fun? :biggrin2:

sorry to hear about the lost rod, but sometimes :05:

in regards to your sounder pics, I have the same sounder, and the first and second pic are definitely fish, and some decent size ones as well I might add.

the reason why you aren't seeing classic arches is because you are stationary or drifting very slowly, when you do this the lines are more horizontal but with a small arch in them.

Also, love how you're sharing your GPS location, was this intended? :biggrin2:

  9. Whats with the Shimano hat dude? i thought you were are Daiwa all the way ... or did you finally come to yor senses and swap the saltigas for a stella :biggrin2:

AHAHAHAHA glad you noticed buddy! this is the story, I've always referred to my Shimano hat as my "Lucky Shimano hat", and I have always done well with it. But then I decided to get the Daiwa cap, and ever since I've got it, I've had the worse luck ever, bust offs, pulled hooks, rod tip snapping... the list goes on... so on this trip I decided to go back to the Shimano cap, and look what happens. So my senses and trust still lies in the Saltiga, but the cap will always say Shimano :biggrin2: see you out there Friday?

  10. Zarn san,

you have mastered the skill of gaffing

mate that is fantasitc, even love the music aswell.

well done buddy, your getting good at the video editing

    cheers

    zed.

thanks buddy, starting to get the hang of this video editing tool I am using... as you can tell, little bit of a fan of Linkin Park :biggrin2:

    He loves gunning it..

Gunning it to squid grounds , Gunning to kingie grounds , Gunning it out of kingie grounds.

Alot of gunning it ! Sure the Quintrex can handle it?. :074:

    Jokes aside.

Having the vid on when the fish takes is classical stuff. Fudge me see how much that rod bends and it is a 24kg + rod. 3 out of 3 and solo amazing what a change of hat does.

AHAHAHhAhAhAh you know it buddy, we gun it everywhere, and the quinny can definitely handle it!!!

mate, that's a 36kg rod! ehehhe yeah should of changed the hat a lot sooner!

  11. Great effort mate, what with you driving with the kingy on? Didn't you realize

Sorry Jennings, not sure if you're joking or not? but if you're not, I definitely realised that I had a king on, the reason why I am driving with it on is to get to deeper waters and away from the reefs. I am downrigging in approximately 10-15 metres of water and I have my bait sitting not very far from the bottom. If I try to just fight the fish of that size right then and there, 9.9/10 times it'll just bust me off on the reefs.

  12. Haha that was me mate I knew you where a raider ;) I'll post a report tomorrow . My back is still killing lol

hahaha good stuff mate! thanks again for your generosity, next time you see me in the bay, come over and like I said, I'll return the favour. How did you guys go after going back in? I think I heard you say you did pretty well before coming outside, would love to read your report. thanks again!!!

  13. I am so sorry I can't make it. Sorry for myself that is..Top effort buddy ..especially solo and all and 100% conversion on hookups. You smarten up on your gaffing skills. It has been a good season.

"Left them biting?" That's my line!! :biggrin2:

Mate, I tried to convince you to come out! yeah it was the hat man! leaving Daiwa cap at home from now on! :biggrin2:

  14. come on boys leave some for me your buggers

    well done guys

how did the gaff jobs go :074:

    cheers

    zed

trust me zed, from what I saw constantly on the sounder, there are plenty out there! you convinced your mate to give the hawks a miss and come down to chase some kings? good luck tomorrow if you're heading out. As for the gaff job, I had a lot more surface area this time, piece of cake!! :biggrin2:

By the time I can get out there will be nothing left. Do me a favor the next time you catch a kingie, put a sign on it saying "PROPERTY OF J HOOKED, WILL COLLECT LATER!" and release him.

I can't get out for another couple of weeks!

    Cheers mate. :biggrin2:

I'll remember to do that next time J :biggrin2: , if there is nothing left by the time you get a chance to get out, it's because they have moved on, but water temp was still quite warm so let's hope it stays that way for a little while longer.

Nice work again, never get sick of the reports, at least it's kings for some ... I think I may have seen you on my way in? We're you still down rigging at about 1pm

    Cheers Luke

heya Luke, I knew you were heading out today and I did try to keep an eye out for you but couldn't find that cox craft, yes I was still down rigging at 1pm, you should have popped by to say hi :biggrin2:

  15. Hi Raiders, not sure if people are sick of king reports yet or not, but here goes another one.

Made a late call last night to get out on the bay for more kings and maybe get onto some hoodies this time, unfortunately my normal fishing buddies couldn't make it so it was a solo trip for me today.

Hit the squid grounds and it was tough with the wind blowing one way and the current the other. Took me close to 2 hours to get 2, 1 small one and a medium size one.

Went outside and downrigged the smaller squid to only let pickers take them, so down goes the medium size one, and first pass BOOOMM!!! rod bends out the back and off I drive to deeper waters, looking back I am praying, please, please do not bust off... 15kg drag and I see line coming off the Saltiga, hearts in my mouth!!!

I soon have it at the boat and my heart is pounding, got the gaff and got it... the relief and joy of landing a hoodie solo was awesome! it went 105cm, no more squid left, I had to go back in and try to get some more.. but a couple kind chaps that were around offered me one of theirs (if you guys are on FR, thanks heaps :biggrin2: , I'll return the favour next time). But unfortunately, I lost the squid to the pickers again.

Had to go back in the get more squid, and first cast, got a big one... packed up and headed back outside and decided to slice him down the middle for 2 pieces of bait. After about 3-4 passes, they weren't interested, and I was saying last pass and back in, and on that pass, the rod buckles over and I hear the drag going off... woohoo!!! I am on again! landed him to exactly 100cm...

Put the other half of squid back on, and the sounder is showing a massive school of kings... and right as I pass them, bang! rod goes off again, it went 96cm.

Still can't wipe the smile off my face!!! :biggrin2::biggrin2:

Left with the sounder still showing plenty of kings still around, and "I left them biting" :biggrin2:

Stay tuned for the video... :biggrin2:

  16. Hi Zarn,

You must love your Daiwa stuff

    Daiwa Rod

    Daiwa Reel

    Daiwa Line

    Daiwa Hat

How are you for Socks & undies :074:

    cheers

    zed.

hey Zed, hahaha these days, your're either a Shimano man or a Daiwa man and we have chosen the latter :biggrin2:

unfortunately I don't think Daiwa have produced any gear for socks and undies but please keep me posted when they do :biggrin2:

Cheers for video guys, only started fishing Botany in the last 6 months and your videos are inspiring me to move out of Towra drifting for flatty to chase something bigger.

If you don't mind me asking what down rigger are you using?

And the kings when do they usually come on and when there not on what do you chase then?

I have noticed its only really hotted up for the kings over the last couple of months of reports from you guys especially so interested in the patterns of the Bay and what's on and when?

Cheers again for the video an absolute cracker!!!

Downrigger on Formosan's boat is a Cannon UniTroll 5 (but when you decide to service it yourself, please don't put too much grease in the clutch area or else!!! right Formosan? :biggrin2: On my boat, I use the Yellowtail brand which performs really well, no complaints at all.

In terms of patterns we've noticed is they are usually more active in the last 2hrs of the run up, but I guess if you have freshly caught squid, no matter the time of the day or tide pattern, you're pretty much in for a chance, just a matter of sounding them out at the usual spots in the bay, stick a squid down, and get ready :biggrin2:
