  1. Hi Pod, the reason braid is not recommended for game-fishing, especially trolling is that braid has zero stretch and with the fish you are likely to encounter that jump, have a hard strike and the pressure involved during the fight, some "give" is required. So most would use either all mono or braid with a top-shot of 150m of mono to provide a "shock absorber". Also being the part that takes most of the load, the top 150m of mono is much less expensive to replace regularly.
  2. We used to catch them frequently in close, off the rocks, years ago but rarely seen in that close these days. That's the beauty of fishing, you just never know and that is one of the things that keeps us going out!
  3. Oh, I'm so pleased that it's not just me (or my mate). Years ago when we used to fish The Peak off Sydney, my mate hooked up big time and it was a long and protracted battle and after 15 minutes it was getting close to the boat - we could seen the outline in the water - this thing was yellowish green and about 2 meters long and for all the world looked like a huge kingy. He said ok gaff it, and I said no, I wont do that, I will lift it in by hand. After a few expletives, he said please just gaff it. Again i said no, it will rip it. WTF he said, its a fish, you won't rip it. I then did a great comfort lift on a 2m sea-anchor, (parachute anchor). He refused to pose for a photo for some reason and no it wasn't attached to a rope or boat at the time. Also at The Peak, I endured a 10 minute battle with another boat's anchor rope that I hooked 30m down - my goodness those things put up a fight! All funny afterwards. Gotta love fishing!
  4. Structure - either natural or man made will often hold yakkas. Your sounder is always your best friend, followed by burley.
  5. Not necessarily recommending this product, but have you tried Egimax - spray it on and look at your jig under UV light. I think the Japanese know a thing or two about catching squid.
  6. Oh goodness, far too much information..........
  7. Sorry, but have to ask bigjewie, but how can you not stop striped tuna in a boat (i fish for them with 3kg line)- yes they are fast and fight hard - are you sure they weren't the yellowfin that have been lurking around?
  8. As you may have gathered, Jetskis are not the favoured marine device.....if you use it for fishing rather that buggering around annoying people who are quietly fishing, then good for you. But seriously, buy a boat and enjoy your fishing more. Cheers, Steve
  9. Hi Hammo, Pearl Beach used to one of my old stamping grounds. Not the greatest spot of the coast. It lacks a lot of features because it doesn't have any real surf which forms features. Given it's proximity to the Hawkesbury, always a chance of a Jewfish. Tailor possibly but the lack of wash may not be in your favour. Always a flathead at low tide but again the lack of beach structure doesn't help. Have a great time anyway, a lovely location. Steve
  10. I heard today of reports of 30kgs yellowfin behind Barrenjoey and in Pittwater last week. From a reputable source.....anyone have any more info? Thanks, Steve
  11. Just a comment, but if you look at the difference between a 10ft rod and a 14ft rod in the surf the difference at say 60m is negligible - I knew that stuff I was forced to learn at school would be useful at some point. The difference of an extra 4 foot of rod length is very marginal as far as keeping the line above the surf / wave break. Sure if you get down to a 6ft rod its different but I would suggest that with a modern graphite rod and braid. a10ft rod will match a 14ft rod most days.
  12. No 1 or 1/0, they may have small mouths relative to the head and bodies but a hook this size will still be swallowed. Agree Mustad 524 has always been my hook of choice.
  13. Agree with Inox, but spray onto a cloth and wipe over the reel. Inox is much better than other spray ons but still needs to be used carefully.
  14. Hi Linc, no tuna oil required, in fact not a good idea. Used this off the rocks for many years and kept the yakkas in an inflatable swimming pool with aerator and than used to add Aspro soluble to keep them buzzing, In a live bait tank probably don't need the Aspro's but an overdose of carbs can make them sluggish (like us). But trust me grated spud really works and because it sinks quickly, the gulls don't get most of it.

  16. No, never use tuna oil.....that will spook them. Bread burley, early morning - than again have caught them at all times of the day. Light line and a small pencil float as they tend to feed close to the surface I find is best.
  17. Suspect it was a two legged critter, not 8 legged, that took your crabs.....at least they left you 2. Has happened to me often. If you check the trap and there are crabs, take them out. Unfortunately there are too many unscrupulous people around.
  18. Apart from being fun to catch, I think they are the best snapper or jewfish bait around. Fresh wonderful but they salt down really well - as long as you have a separate bait fridge.....the odour can be a bit off-putting!
  19. Have to agree, sprays will only dilute and pollute the good grease you have in the reel. Recommend not to do it, a good wipe over with a cloth that has warm soapy water then dry and leave to fully dry. A once a year service is important.
  20. I still don't think you can beat a 3kg handline with one long-shank hook......much better feel of bites and less untangling. When you feel the bite, just let it go for a moment and then gently pull. Has worked for me for years. Have compared my technique with mates using the rigs, my way always seems to win. Oh and use grated potato as burley.
  21. Agree Jim, many years ago I went to a Japanese restaurant and had sashimi which I love. One of the fish served raw was yellowtail, along with the usual kingfish and Tuna but have to say the yellowtail were delicious. All these years I have been releasing my live bait back at the ramp when I should have kept them and probably not brought back my other fish.
  22. Once again, Fisheries don't actually understand the situation they are there to actually manage. I would regularly take at 6 or more rods when fishing alone, and yes they are pre-rigged with hooks or lures attached so assume I am breaking the "law". If the legislators would actually speak with real fisher people they may get a better appreciation. Though I agree, if confronted with an on the spot check by fisheries, just be polite, don't try to hide gear and in my experience they will simply wish you a good day. They are real people trying to crack down on lawbreakers and should be respected for their job - they don't make the rules - only try to interpret and implement them in a practical way. If you have 8 lines in the water, that is stretching it.
  23. Well done on that, especially shore-based. Have been fishing for Kings for a long time and have now come to the conclusion that the harder you pull, they do the same. Have had a lot of success in catching them in less than 2m of water in very bad reef and have found that more often than not, gentle pressure works. Just try to steer them.....gently. I caught one of 16 kgs off the rocks and an experienced fisherman along side said "what are you doing, I fight a luderick harder than that". Hey what ever works I guess! Steve
  24. How good is that feeling! I remember my first legal fish some 50 years ago.......many more for you ahead. You should feel good. I think that it's either in your DNA or not.....as you spent a year getting to this point, I suspect you have it......a lifetime of fun is ahead of you. Steve
  25. Sorry Harry, but people do not read signs (or at least take on board the message), it has been well studied and proven. It needs to be presented in a much better way other than when they suddenly turn up on the rocks to go fishing......because fishing they will go, regardless of any signs. It needs a longer, thought out process to get the message through. Steve
