Just had a few days unwinding down near Mollymook with the family and happy to come home with 2 flatties from Burrill Lake.
It was a good time of fishing different locations on SP i.e. wharves, inlets and of course Burrill Lake, and having good chats with the local fishing shop owners to see where to go.
Anyways was a bit discouraged when the first shop I went into, the bloke told me I was a month too early and that the big flatties wouldn't be around until the water got warmer. He told me to have a go at one of the jetties which he highly recommended. So turn up with my wife and little girl and get met with overcast skies which were threatening to rain on my parade. But after missing out on the Botany Bay social, I needed to get out there(put out a bait as well as a feeler). A few minutes later a few bait fish come near the jetty and then this beautiful ray glided past, and with the lake being this healthy I thought I'd be real grumpy if I went home with nothing.
Well one of the casts was great, sent it out past some ducks (so I thought), then I felt some tension and a duck who was having problems taking off. Hooked the duck!!! Scared for my life, thinking someone must be putting two and two together and thinking that I'm going to take the duck home to make Peking duck or something....I blame my asian ancestry! Well quickly got the duck in and cut my line from around him....crisis over.
So a few moments later, put out a nice cast and the SP got carried in the wind and start the slow retrieve and TENSION, hooked a flatty and landed it with no worries. A guy next to me landed a nice bream afterwards and then it started to rain.
Didn't have enough the previous day so wake up at 5:30am to hit the lake, this time landing another flatty before the rain came down..so in the end nothing too big - 2 flatties @ 38 cm a piece, but not bad for a time when the lake isn't meant to be firing
I've attached the pic of the first flattie I got, didn't have a camera for the early morning one the next day.
