I've trolled the harbour over the last few weeks and not seen any. Plenty of small Tailor. Previous years they have almost been a pest gulping lures.
thanks for the info
seems like the bonito are still too far from sydney

2hours to put the car on the boat...Took my pathfinder to hobart last xmas...cost around $180 for the car...very cheap...cost $1600 for a cabin for 4 round trip...very expensive!!! You can get a seat for free if you dont mind sitting for about 9hrs...so fly to tas then drive the car from melbourne to sydney...you must prebook the car before you go...spots very limited...and you need alot of patience because it takes about 2hrs to boat the boat...

Hill60 28/09/16
Decided to take the family for a drive to port kembla. Got to hill60 and the carpark was full. Alot of workers doing some type of construction. Saw half a dozen fishos so decided to check it out. Anyway started fishing around 1pm with 2 rods using pillys and squid. Swell was around 1.5m so plenty of water on the ledge. A huge wave came and wet all my gear. Safest spot was at the point so me and my eldest son fished that spot. Keep losing the bait to pickers so started using small hooks. Landed 3 black drummer and kept 1 for the wife. Run out of pillys so started using prawns and chicken. Keep losing the bait to puckers so decided to pack up around 3pm. The swell was getting bigger too. Around 2m. Was hoping for a kingy or even a salmon but no joy. Plenty of birds near the islands. Saw 3 boats following the birds but didnt see anyone catching. Planning to go back next week after the long weekend. Going to nelson bay this long weekend and will be fishing the marina breakwall the beaches. Have a safe weekend everyone.

I use whole pillys on ganged hooks mostlyWhat your preferred bait when targeting big fish of the beach?
Is squid a good bait in the surf
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Also use tailor for live bait or a slab of salmon
Havent had much success on squid off the beach
Caught most fish on whole pillys off the beach using a big ball or star sinker

I use 12ft rod with my penn 760 for bait targeting the big fish using 50lb main 50lb trace
I use my penn 560 with 10ft for lures and small fish using 20lb main 20/30lb trace
Usually catch salmon tailor flathead off the beach

I think you need 2 different rodsHey fellas im chasing some advice on a rod to match to a Penn Spinfisher V. Im looking at getting the 6500, something that can handle decent fish off the rocks or off a boat when the opportunity arises. I already own a Shimano Symmetre and a Sedona in the 4000 size that I use from the beach and off rocks around the northern beaches. I know that the 5500 and the 6500 have the same internals with just a difference in line capacity, will probably look to load around 30lb braid 50lb FC leader on it.
Can anyone recommend a MH fast action rod that I can use off the rocks and then also possibly off a boat for jigging and trolling. Main use would be flicking metals and general bait use, pillys, whole squid and strips on gangs.
Price range would be between $100-200 depending as the reel will set me back about $200.
Cheers.
1 for the boat ie jigging/trolling 5ft-6ft rod
1 for the rocks ie 9ft to 12ft rod
Penn ssv is one of the best reels around for under $200
Check out the penn spinfisher v rods cost less than $100 for your boat rod and penn prevail cost less than $200 for your rocks rod

Drift from 40m to 60mHi - never fished for flatties offshore - pretty much just in and around Broken Bay with poddy mullet and plastics.
Wondering if somebody who knows could give me some direction.
- Other than reefs, I've always imagined the bottom of the ocean around Sydney to be a big sandy desert - so how do you know where to find flathead?
- Is there a better time of year for offshore flathead, or does it correspond with the better estuary months Oct-April?
- What is the best rig & bait - understanding they are probably not overly fussy.
- Drift?
Any advice is appreciated!!
Paternoster with 4/0 circle hook
Mullet and squid strips
Very good spot off maroubra beach
Goodluck

Hi all
Decided to go to hobart and try my luck on catching my 1st bluefin. Booked a charter off eagle hawk neck with my mate paul. The charter was cancelled yesterday due to bad weather but luckily today the weather got better. Got to the ramp around 7am and on the water around 730am. Headed straight to tasman island and started trolling skirts and minnows. Got our 1st strike after 15mins but the hook came off. Our 2nd strike came after almost 1hr and landed our 1st bluefin. High fives all round. We got a double hookup not long after and landed both. With only 1 more to reach our bag limit, it was my turn on the rod. We got another double hook up and landed both. I ended up releasing my one after a couple of pics. We decided to target kingys. Within 10mins of putting out the new lures we landed our 1st kingy and was released. We got another one not long after and decided to keep the 2nd one. Didnt get any more kingys after that so we decided to try and catch more bluefin for fun and hoping to catch our 1st albacore. Got our next bluefin after 30mins but before we can land it a seal grabbed the bluefin. Took around 10mins to get our lure back. Got a triple hook up but only managed to land 2. The 3rd one was taken by the seals again. We didnt get anymore hook ups after that. Back at the marina around 3pm. Total for the day was bluefin 7 landed 2 lost to the seals 1 hook pulled. 2 kingys. Best day ever. Average weight of the bluefin was 15kg.
Finally got to tick off bluefin on my list. Next on the list will be spanish mack or wahoo. Probably need to go north to catch it. Thanks for reading.

Charter costs $960 for 4 people for 8hrs off eagle hawk neckG'day fisholb, that's 2 species that I'd love to catch. Well done. I've been on quite a few charters in different places, but not Tassie. What sorta costs for a days fishing down there, if you don't mind me asking? Neil
