I've been putting my batteries on a low amperage charger and connected to a simple power plug timer (pin type) I charge them for 30 minutes every 24 hours. 30 minutes is the shortest time I can set. Battery voltage when not charging seems to be maintained at 12.4V. Any views on this approach?

What type of battery is it?(deep cycle AGM, lead acid, Gel??) & what are you charging it with??

Im no 12V guru but I thought it was always ideal to keep a battery at near fully charged which is close to 13V.

At 12.4V you are only keeping the battery charged at 75% which imo could reduce its life?

If your using a decent smart charger it will just keep & maintain the battery at the optimum float level & in a non sulphating state.

  2. Sounds like I missed out on a cracker of a day & with all the very average weather of recent good to see you had a great day out, even better when you can bag out

I've never believed in the banana superstition(or any other) but I think it only works when you try it with reel banana's not plastic 😅, although its great to hear you have come over to the dark side & are getting a few fish on the plastics 😁

  3. All fish even in the same species will taste different(all be it subtle) & again is dependant on location, habitat & what they are feeding on & often fish flesh & flavour will be affected by time of year, spawning season etc

Line the flathead species up in a blind tasting & if you can identify them by flavour then your better than the best sniffer dog in the world 😉

  4. So it's ok for commercial operator to rake the sea, take whatever they want to sell, discard the "rubbish" dead into the ocean & the consumer gets chargead this & we can only take 5??

    Wake up people!

    image.png.10cad28d75bb9eb3b463542ce2bccce6.png.1beab22340f638c0bdf652f968e4aa50.png

How about they restrict the commercial quata which is why we agreed to pay for a fishing license in the 1st place.

No point us agreeing an erosion of our fishing rights to a bag limit of 5 when commercial operators are not affected!!

I was talking with a young guy ( 16 years old ) the other day and the knowledge he had about most aspects of fishing blew my mind, He could name all the tackle manufacturers, state the Serial numbers of different rod and what it all meant, could state what hook had what number to it, Could identify lures from my collection that I didn't have a clue who made it. The list of this guys knowledge goes on and on.

Plenty of internet warriors & verbal hero's out there, making claims etc without any "practical" experience.

Ask them to tie a few knots in front of you like an FG, Bimini twist, Australian plait, snell, rapala, dropper loop etc.

They would probably say mum is calling me I have to go home now :whistling:

Until last week had been a long time between a fish for Dad and I. In our first attempt back last week we managed only 2 flathead in Botany Bay.

Tried the Hacking yesterday instead which proved to be the right decision. Yowie was kind enough to leave us all some fish.

We gave a few to the neighbours, had some sashimi yesterday, fish soup with the frames and will finish the rest tonight / tomorrow.

Nice work Corro, the bay has been pretty average of late so good move, think I might have to do the same thing next time out for something different.

Sounds like you & the neighbours got a good feed out of your day

Feel free to put some of your favourite recipes in the kitchen 🙂

Thanks for your report HP, it made me laugh a bit. Lots of good anglers on this forum will shoot me down in flames for what I'm about to tell you, but that's what the site is all about. Ditch the circle hooks! Half the fun in angling is reading the bite and challenging yourself to hook the fish. Chucking a bait in with a circle hook leaves you with the minimum fun level of winding the fish in. Sure it will (most likely) be hooked in the corner of the mouth, but the real challenge is taken away by the fish hooking itself. I know there are benefits with circle hooks (possible less damage to the fish). Personally, I like to imagine what's going on beneath the water, it increases the anticipation level. You will soon learn when the fish has the bait in its mouth and is swimming away with it. Time to strike!

Some things you will learn in the short term. Small fish will pick a decent bait to pieces and not get hooked (most of the time). So use a smaller hook, little or no weight, and smaller bait size. Move the bait to make it harder for them...if you want to catch these small fish. Use berley to work the fish into a feeding frenzy where they will throw caution to the wind. A simple mix of bread and finely chopped fish is great for bringing Bream around jetties, etc. Most of all do the right thing by wifey, get more leave passes and enjoy the experience.

    Cheers, bn

As usual BN there are different opinions in how we all look at things.

I don't see circle hooks as set & forget type of fishing, the fish can catch itself but I certainly believe that it will assist you especially in deep water fishing where there there is a lot of distance between the rod & the hook.

The fun starts when you do hook up, even if the rod is in the holder you still have to get it to the boat/shore, there are no guarantees on this unless you are really over gunned & thats not fun at all, we all love the feel of a real fight to the gear we are using(through every weigh class you can think of)

The other factor as you did mentioned is actually fish survival rates, the nsw dpi actually recommend the use of an offset circle hooks for that reason, so if we can save the fish we want to return by using a circle hook then Im all for it as long as it suits the type of fishing I am doing.

    https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/recreational/fishing-skills/catch-and-release

There are also people out there as well that just catch & release, no judging that(hey if I fish my intention is to always get a feed but also enjoy being on the water & company) & if that's what you want to do then again circles are a better option for the fish, especially with crushing the barb as well.

Most of my bait fishing is done with unweighted baits. I watch for bites via the belly of the line, or watching for line stripping off the spool with an open bail like you describe.

Pretty much why I mentioned it.

There are a lot of different factors that go into it.

If I am fishing in 20mtrs of water & the sounder showing fish on the bottom then you need some weight to get it to where the fish are. If your fishing in 5mtrs of water then different story.

Can you explain why this is? I dislike the small ball sinkers for 2 reasons: 1) They get snagged very easily 2) I have a hard time keeping the line tight to a tiny ball sinker.

Why do you need to have a tight line??

Many fish that feel any tension will just drop the bait straight away.

Many people will bait fish with a totally unweighted bait, just letting it float down through the water column, even with the bail arm open & if they feel line peeling out close the bail arm & strike.

Lots of different ways to fish but it does depend on the species your actually trying to catch.

One of the biggest things I have learnt in the last 10 years is to fish for a species in mind, that means find the structure/area that a particular species will habitat, use a rig that is designed to that species, fish as light as possible(line/leader/sinker/) that location/currents/tides permit.

If I am bait fishing the 2 most common types of rigs I use are these-

If I am fishing for whiting I would use the paternoster, but would use some fluro tube & beads just above the hook & would use a longer shanked hook.

Lots of different types of rigs out there, the sooner you learn about some of these & the habitat of certain species the more fish you will catch 😉.

    Good luck.

I've had more luck catching jews in rivers more then bays and larger body's of water, looking at google maps, you should try karuah river, find some deep ledges and try them out or the mouth of the river. not sure how deep the river is though.

even if the bank drops sharply into 6m of water, that would be plenty to drift baits along as jew would probably cruise along those steeper deep banks

That location is actually a known jew spot because of the gutters & holes made by the tidal current

Actually even Scratchie mentioned he fished it not long ago in a report but no fish taken on that occassion

    Hey Raiders,

Got an early mark from work and weather was good so I decided to give the Jew another go.
Headed out a few hours before the tide and managed to pick up 2 whiting and a herring to put into the bait tank. Water was like chocolate and was hard picking through the undersized bream who were full of courage under cover!
pulled up to my regular spot at middle island and dropped a whiting and the herring down. Herring didn’t last long and died on the hook so the other whiting went down.
then a hit and the first whiting was cut in half, I’m suspecting tailor!
Unfortunatly not much action after that and I left home again empty handed.

    my questions are;

Is whiting a suitable bait when I can’t get some yakkas or slimys quickly?

and I am fishing up on this ledge (marked with the x) mainly, should I be here or try and get into the deeper water off the ledge?
I am struggling to really know exactly where to be and if the fish just come past or I’ve got to sound them up.

Thanks! I’m feeling closer but still so very far from a Jew and any/all advice is appreciated.

It is a tricky spot because of the tides.

The amount of water that rushes either side of that island is huge as the tide get into full swing so Id really only fish there a short period before & as the tide turns.

There is also a big hole on the eastern side of that island that again the current forms.

I remember when I was a kid the next door neighbour pulled a very large tuna out of the same hole & I have a picture of it somewhere.

I also recall as a kid fishing in the same spot(eastern hole) with the old man & he caught a Taylor & as I lent over to grab & bring it into the boat a 2+mtr shark was following it to the boat. Scared the s**t out of me!

There is all sorts on that bay.......great whites, have even seen a penguin swimming up the breakwall once looking for a feed.

  12. Congrats on getting on the board

As per your previous thread re braid & sensitivity, you wont feel a bite if your sinker is way heavier than it actually needs to be for the size of the fish your trying to catch, water depth/flow of current etc.

For where your fishing a small ball running sinker rig is all you need 😉

As they say, fish light catch more fish, lose the occasion bigger one.

  13. Generally speaking braided line is more sensitive than monofilament line but there are scenario's that its better to use monofilament over braid which for me is beach fishing, rock fishing & trolling where you want that bit of stretch that mono will give.

On nearly every other fishing scenario I use braid with fluorocarbon leader.

But you want to use the braid in the line class for what your intending on catching & the size of fish you hope to catch, along with a similar rated rod & reel.

For estuary fishing most of my reels have 8 to 10lb braid & I either keep to a similar rated leader or increase or decrease depending on what I am targeting.

In saying that I will also have another couple of heavier rods in the tinny just in case there is something bigger that presents itself.

If the occasional fish that is outside the slot  dies and has to go back it at least provides a feed for the rest of the eco system.
There are things we can do to minimise this like :

Up size your lures , hooks and bait - Flathead are not usually a finicky fish so no need for finesse tactics.

Up size your tackle to minimise fight time,I know some like to brag about catching a big fish on 2kg line but research has shown that minimising the length of the fight and the time a fish is out of the water greatly increases its survival rate.

I fish for flathead for food and my personal slot limit is even tighter than what is being proposed and my bag limit was 5 or 6 anyway .

While I don’t like to see any fish wasted and in a perfect world where you could trust everyone to do the right thing we could have an addendum in there for fish that die during capture to be kept but as we don’t live in a perfect world and some would use that reason to be able to keep fish outside the slot limit so we have little choice but to implement these laws .

On a brighter note the creation of oyster reefs is a massive positive and although it will take many years to get the full benefits of this Al least we are going in the right direction !

Why not keep the bag limit where it is but make the legal size limit from 45cm to 60cm with 1 fish only over 60cm??

To me that makes more sense that taking the younger breeding population before they have had a chance to spawn. young!

If you can catch 10 fish between 45-60cm then you have had an exceptional & rare day & even less larger females taken!!!

Wonder if somehow through fish raider  we can compare reports this year and the next or whenever about La niña and how it fishing is with it.

because I to agree looking at the change in conditions and fishing would be intresting

At the end of the day we are mostly just casual recreational fisho's & its probably something more to be explored by the scientific community

Still, in saying that we could personally possibly note certain things like water temp to catch rates

Then gets tricky when you start to throw in factors like barometric pressure, moon phase etc.

There are already theories on this but then add Nina & Nino??

But if I didnt watch the news then I would have no idea if this was an La Nina effect period...................who keeps track?

In the end if the sun if shining, the wind is not blowing & your not busy working then there just go fishing & roll the dice I say.

Better for your than sitting on the couch watching Netflix!

  16. Well I think whether we are in a La Nina or El Nino weather effect the only way your going to catch fish is if your on the water & if you just keep casting.

Thanks goodness lockdown is over because I dont really care which one is in play atm but just want to get out as much as possible & the weather permits.....................which is the problem with La Nina.

In saying that it would interesting to be able to collect data on how the 2 effect fishing.

Being a La Nina at the moment, you can imaging water current being warmer & therefor fish that might be caught further out coming closer to shore??

Still all the rain would have to have an affect on the water quality, both estuary & to a degree outside within a certain distance.

I think Australia's last major La Nina effect actually lasted nearly 3 years & caused a lot of damage to crop production & infrastructure so be careful for what you wish for 😬

Sorry everyone, I really appreciate the help and advice. I didn't mean any disrecpt at all. Im just not in the right hesd space at the moment due to external factors, nothing to do with fishing at all.

    Thanks everyone

I think any of us can get fixated on something & think that where is only the one solution or the one thing I need to buy & its the only option.

That's why this forum is so good as sometimes it just take a bit of honest advice to help you realise maybe I am thinking about this the wrong way.

Dont worry I have bought things that I just thought yep this is what I really need, maybe didn't do enough research or again just fixated by this shiny thing on the internet & then when it arrived I though.............why did I end up getting this when it overkill or not the right solution & end up selling it (at a loss) to then have to buy what I should have originally.

I have outfits ranging from 1-3kg to 37kg & if I was go out on a Yak to chase kings then the ones I would be picking up would be the ones in 4-6kg & 10-15kg range.

As with most fishing the lighter you fish generally the more fish you will catch, as the guys mentioned you could get busted of on occasions, if need be with a lighter outfit you can still up the leader size to give yourself a better chance.

Most good braids will have 20%+ more breaking strain than what's on the label anyway, at the end of the day if your not tying a decent knot then you will be reducing the strain which is another subject.

At the end of the day dont rush your decision, just do the background research from multiple sources.

    Good luck with your decision.

  18.

If you want at get a heavy rod for kings the I also recommend an Ugly stik but in the Bluewater model USBW-JSP 561XH 24kg PE5 150-300g although

    They also have a 15-24kg model which I think would be better from a Yak USBW-SP 701XH 15-24kg 25-120g

    https://www.uglystik.com.au/product/bluewater-rod/

Personally I think a 10-15kg rod/setup is ample from a Yak here in nsw Australia uless your going to take your Yak out to the continental shelf!

As in the link you provided the rod is a 24-37kg "boat" rod.

  19. 33 minutes ago, slothparade said:

Sorry but what's wrong with it? In my research 37 kg seems to be the normal that people are using to target kings and jewies. On YouTube at least.

From a boat maybe possibly a PWC.

My tinny weighs approx 300+kg with me in it.

I got a snag last time out fishing with a light rod, 3kg drag reel, 10lb braid & 12lb leader.

Tried to reverse off of course but I had to lock the drag to try to break the line & I dragged the boat all the way to the point where the line was near vertical before I could snap the line.

Imagine that with a big fish on & 37kg rod,  & heavy braid & leader, 15kg drag on a vessel that weighs 50kg?

What does this "slot limit" mean??

Does it mean that you cant take a FH over 70cm??

Not that I normally would but if a fish that size has sustained what would be a fatal injury when being caught & would not most likely live then that would mean that you could then not keep it in possession otherwise you could be fined??

If thats the case then I disagree.

I return any FH I catch over 55cm anyway but if a fish wont survive that that would be a waste imo!
