Google tells me that high end sashimi / sushi places dry-age them, as well. Sometimes quite a long time, under controlled conditions. What's everyone's take on this? I might experiment with this a bit more..

What doesn't kill you can only make you stronger right 💪 🤢🤮

    Just kidding.

What is the definition of dry aging?

BUT as you mention "controlled conditions"

    What are they?

You need to know what your doing & as you say done under the right conditions otherwise incorrectly treated food can kill you.

Dry aging(more so in beef) is a process where enzymes in the meat break down the protien chains & intern tenderize but also change the flavour characteristics as well.

The big issue with any protien is that micro bacterial growth & pathogens can easily multiply, especially if it is not being cooked or cures with salt(which can be a bacteria killer)

In the case of the beef, it's aged for a minimum of 21 days up the whatever your confident of, the meat it trimmed back & the outer layer discarded but then the meat is seared/cooked.

I prefer to cure or smoke fish if I am going to keep it longer.

If your talking about just some air drying to reduce a little moisture content & tighten the flesh then your only talking a day or so imo which isn't really dry aging.

  3. Could have busted you off on the cans anchor rope??

But I would ask why you are using a swivel unless you were trolling the live bait?

I would normally just be using a straight through braid to fluro connecting with a FG.

Using this I actually find it hard to even break the line when I occasionally get a snag with 10lb braid & 12lb leader & I can usually pull my 350kg + loaded tinny to vertical line pull.

Personally 99.9% of the time only use a swivel if I am trolling or in the case of a HD snap swivel when dropping into deep water plus in the same case I can easily change rig from the snap swivel down.

Imo I think the uni is a great quick effective knot but if I am using it in more heavier gauge fishing then I will use the modified uni for a bit of extra strength, even with fluro

Everyone does their own thing but Im happy with the way this goes for me.

How's that new fishing rig going anyway, you must have it by now??

  4. I still remember some of your stories from NB on how you would finish work at the we small hours of the morning, go fishing, come home & go straight to work then go straight out fishing again after work the next day 😳

Good to see your still keen as ever Jeff

Just take it easy on the roads mate, lack of sleep & long road trips dont mix to well.

Occasionally I need to change up my leader on a given outfit whilst on the water. Often, the leader is perfectly fine

Do you mean your upping or decreasing the leader strength for some reason??

I try to avoid this by having 4 rigged rods set up in the tinny with me & if I am chasing something larger or smaller I use the appropriate rod.

    1x 8lb braid, 10lb leader

    1x 10lb braid, 12lb leader

    1x 12lb braid, 14lb leader

    1x 20lb braid, 30lb leader

I also have a heavy outfit unrigged if there are any kings about that is 50lb braid, 80lb leader(wind on so I can change this on the fly.

The only time I will change a leader when I am out is if it gets chaffed or damaged.

As you suggest retying an FG while your on the water in a boat is not always easy & I even have an FG Knot assistant but still prefer to do it from home.

  6. Love the analogy @Bryant fish "cheese block" 😂

Yes I have one of those cheese blocks in the garage but your 100%, if your actually going to wear one then you need to be comfortable.

They are as hot as hell in the middle of summer, cumbersome & thats why no one wears them.

The only benefit to them is if you capsize & they are in your hull they could probably help keep it afloat 🤔

Still I believe you should still wear one even if your not solo.

I wear my 150 whether solo in the bay or with other people offshore.

    Stuff can happen to quickly!

Just follow the reg requirements but in never hurt to exceed those requirements when it comes to safety.

  7. Nice one Donna.

I felt like bumping the original titled thread a few weeks ago when looking at all the reports that were coming in with a lack of detail.

Imo the reports are actually to help fellow raiders on the conditions when fish were caught(tide, time of day, water temp etc), how they were caught(bait, artificial lures, jig head size, type & colour of SP's etc) and some general location information(we dont need to know your GPS marks but a general area would help!)

I mean at then end of the day if you want to just "brag" about a fish you have caught there is also a space for that here-

    https://www.fishraider.com.au/forum/16-brag-board/

    That's my 2 bobs worth 🙂

  8. Nice work on the goat fish BL, Ive never eaten that species before & would be keen to try if I was ever able to catch one.

There is something about "red" coloured fish that seems to make them better eating over some other species, no idea what it is but probably has something to do with their diet?

  9. Well done ilkfish, sometimes a bit of glitter is all a fish will need, especially taylor or salmon.

Doing any DIY lures does give you a certain amount of satisfaction, especially when it pays of with a fish.

There is such a large amount of materials around now that are redily available that back in the day would be harder to find & get.

There are a few other DIY's in here in you have a look around that might interest you.

I must admit have never thought of doing DIY Xmas tree's but I but the unrigged versions & then rig them myself the way I want.

    Good luck with them

    Hi there !!!

Is anyone keen to go fishing on weekdays after work, a couple of hours (Between 4pm to 8pm). I bought a tinny 4m with a 30hp, it runs perfect.

I live in Randwick, it could launch on rose bay or botany bay bote ramp.

I would like to target flathead and bream on lures, soft plastics but Im open to any other idea.

Im from Argentina, where I used to go fishing every time I could. All my experience was in freshwater and of course, different species as well. I came to Australia almost 2 years ago and since then I havent been fishing as much as I would like to.

So for that reason I got the boat, to be on the water and do what I love.. FISHING !

But, of all people I know, no one likes fishing so here I am trying to find like-minded people.

If someone is Interested just le me know. Cheers !! Juan : 0481 748 056

    Hi Juan, welcome to FR.

I live not far from you but I rarely get out in the times your suggesting as I fish midweek mornings & not on weekends due to crowded ramps etc.

Still you never know we might cross paths one day on the water in BBay.

Don't forget about Port Hacking, its worth a look as well from time to time.

    Hi Mate welcome.

I have a boat I am getting ready for fishing and should have it done in a couple of weeks.

I would be pleased to take you out into Botany bay and other places once it is ready to go.

One problem is I am not healthy and take a bit of time to launch and retrieve the boat and your assistance may be required to lend a hand in that department.

The boat and trailer is fitted with drive on/off release clip ( home made ) so it will be a pretty easy job doing it.

Would probably require you to walk up ramp and get the car/trailer and back it down to the water.

That will be a great little package when its done Frank!

My offer still stands, just give me a shout when your ready or if I can help in some way let me know 🙂

Hey Bob. Looks like you're travelling well on the fishing front. Mate told me there's moves by those who are a mixture of blue and yellow to try to ban the use of live bait. Have you heard this and if so, what do you reckon?

Other Raiders feel free to chip in on this one as (if true) it would have a massive impact on angling across the board.

BN Its outlined in this thread-

Sounds like you missed out on the petition & not sure where this is at the moment as far as legislation goes-

I to have had the pleasure several times of enjoying both Zoran & Others company on board Barrycuda & experiencing the great ride & performance of Barry with both the old two stroke & now the new 4 stroke mercury. I think the purpose built pod that the donk sits on makes for an amazing ride and has turned Barry into an absolute weapon, I’ve been on quite a few boats some bigger than Barry & I can honestly say only a 48 & 35 Bertram have had a more comfortable ride

As far as being the ideal fishing vessel I give it👍 👍😎👍👍, Z has put a lot of effort & well thought out gadgets to make a day out fishing not only safe, easy but also pleasurable with everything that’s needed within reach.

    Couldn't agree more Dieter.

The person buying this vessel will appreciate how well it has been maintained over the years & the new power train set up gives everything it needs in power & also economy.

I had the opportunity to have a ride out to Browns with Zoran & Dieter in the Barry enjoyed every second of the ride out & the ride in 🙂

One thing I learned from a four year stint as a banquets waiter at a large hotel and then a function centre was not to cross the senior chefs! 🤣 When I first started out, I used to wonder what was up with them. Now I’m older and having experienced a number of other jobs, I realise how stressful a professional kitchen can be, with so many mini-deadlines in a shift. Once you earned their trust (or they got me in line), they were fine, but it was a bit of a shock to begin with.

Yes LF its absolutely a high pressure & time critical industry with high expectations which I guess is based on how much your spending as well.

Some people dont get it or are not skilled or adept to working under different conditions, but its the same really in every industry I'd say, training staff is an everyday occurrence but how each person is receptive to the training is another story!

  14. @Little_Flatty The weather has been less than ideal lately but good to here your out there giving it a crack.

I think we all tend to look at what a day out on the water means to us now post lockdowns, anytime you can have a day of freedom & catch some fish & then bring a few home for a feed will always be a bonus 🙂

Good to hear you enjoyed one of my ideas with the compound butter & you have reminded me to do an update on that thread.

I want to add some different components to it that are native Aussie ingredients that blend well with fish.

    Thanks for the report

With my pottery wheel cactus due to a blown up motor and no replacement parts available, I took the opportunity to go catch a few Mud Marlin in the local channel. The river is running a banker and is unfishable, but the irrigation channels are just very full, but fishable.

I used 2 rods, both with paternoster rigs and bread for bait. The bites were regular and I got half a dozen in a short space of time. Really good fun on 6 lb line and a light drag. Did lose quite a few in the rocks which form the framework of channel banks near the regulators. The fish ranged from about 40 to 70 cms and (were) in good condition. Here are a few pics. bn

Nice pest eradication there BN

Nice catch of a pest. You would need to fish all week to reduce the numbers (probably by 0.01%  😂 )

While true it still makes a difference!

Those 10 caught carp probably just saved 40 Murray cod or other native species.

i havent caught enough big fish so keen to get your experience @kingie chaser - reckon the EVA sheet is thick enough to protect the inside layer? i went with vinyl originally as its pretty thick but soft enough to absorb/stretch from scrapes and stabs so thought it would be a good material.

I have no idea mate, just throwing suggestions out there. Never used one of those bags & I'd say they will all be different base on brand & coin spent.

Id imagine the dearer ones might be thicker & maybe have some sort of webbing?

These things to me are trial & error & the EVA material is cheap & a perfect size but you have to put your hands on it & feel it to see if it will suit.

When researching stuff on the net I often think yeh that will do the job, then I get to the store & often find that its actually not what I am looking for.

At least now we can actually go & "feel" stuff at the store.

During lockdown I ordered a few small tackle items from the big snake store which was just click & collect no instore purchases allowed 🙄, picked it up, went home & thought well this isnt actually what I wanted.

  17. Eva plastic?

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/1200-x-450mm-white-colour-plastic-liner_p2583492?store=7313&gclid=Cj0KCQiAqbyNBhC2ARIsALDwAsB8qNDfGG4teF1elxcOTngKR7uOcaJtuThCnw3LtnRV5chSpTF-q4AaAh0hEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

If it was big fish like tuna or kingfish etc maybe rather than trying to reline the inside of the bag what about simply wrapping the fish in some other material like hessian so as to keep the fins down?

Yeah I just have a bit of a thing for nice gear. I grew up using cheap stuff, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve been fortunate enough to be to get some nice stuff. In saying that, I don’t catch anywhere near enough fish to warrant most of the gear I use.

But I don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t gamble, so it’s probably not a bad vice to have 😂

I cant disagree with any of that comment 😉

I usually buy the best I can afford no matter what it is used for.

I just bought a new downrigger(moderately priced 😁) which I didn't think I wanted to spend the money on but then if it does what I want it to do it will pay for itself in fish caught & the enjoyment factor as well.

Life is about providing warm fuzzy feelings but its not always about how much money you spend ✌️

No point leaving it all to the kids 😅

  19. One mans "high end" reel or rod is another man's K-mart version, its all relative to your income or actual interpretation of what is high end.

My idea of a high end reel is something like a Daiwa Saltiga or a Shimano Stella with a matching rod, but thats out of my price range.

At the end of the day they all catch fish, even the Kmart store bought $100 combo's still catch decent fish which has been demonstrated buy a few people on here

Nothing wrong or right with high end or cheap end gear as they all catch fish.

Enjoy your new purchase when it arrives & hope it gets you onto some fish 👌

I love & appreciate all my gear, whether cheap, moderately priced or the rare high end item(in my mind) 😉
