Hey guys,
Ive purchased a Stacer 509 Baymaster with a 115hp Merc Optimax and looking to take it out either past botany heads or out Cronulla way.
What sort of weather (wind, swell) am I looking at to cruise on out? I don't want to get smashed out there! I'm looking to snag my first Kingie!
Cheers
Mel
I still dream of the day I could own a boat like yours having only owned a 13ft tinny.

For me this is the best & most simple & easily understandable advise.
I dont know anyone who ever successfully attempted to climb a mountain like Everest before first climbing a smaller mountain.................................................several times!

Hi fellow FRs thanks everyone for their great informative reply’s & messages you have sent me. Just following up received a call from someone within the BOM today. They were good enough to provide quite a substantial breakdown of what is occurring & have emailed me a number of scientific papers to read. I will attempt to understand them and if I can will summarize the key points for everyone.
Sweet, good to hear they got back to you instead of just ignoring you!
That will be an interesting read I would say.
I'd like to hear how they forecast the weather but make excuses in where they can get it wrong 🤔 😁

Yep thats why they call it a weather "prediction" has so many variables to factor into that that it can change in a matter of hours.

I presume the ramp/car park is inside the NP so Id say yeh you need to pay the park entry fee for the day which is just $8

GDay All
Having recently bought a property out the back of Byron Bay I thought I would provide a bit of an update from up here. Seas have made it almost impossible to fish regularly over the Christmas / New Year period. Getting over the bar is something I am treating with extreme caution. Thankfully the great folks in the Ballina Marine Rescue do an amazing job and lend their years of knowledge and experience whenever asked.
Yesterday was pretty much the first break we have had for weeks, so took the wife and young fellow out. The plan was head to the 32 fathom reefs, try and put some reef fish in the esky and maybe finish with a troll around for a marklin.
Headed out around 5.30am, got over a sloppy bar following a local fisho up here FOZZY. I feel so much better following someone.
Bait was mullet strips, yakka, some squid and what we catch, sargent baker (I am told a great snapper bait) and tailor were quickly cubed and slabbed up. The action was pretty instant the moment the lines hit the bottom.
Bagged out on flatties between 40 and 60cm. Got a couple of ripper tusk fish (amongst a host of smaller ones let go to fight another day) and some nice pan sized snapper.
With an off the water deadline of 12.30pm we decided to troll up the 32 fathom reef heading towards the Ballina fad.
Water temp 27 degrees and cobalt blue it didn't take long before the action started. Started with a slower troll hoping wit a couple of larger rapalas out and a skirt doing its think across the surface.
First action, double hookup on black marlin. Yep the ammos we are lost them both, but for 5 minutes or so it was electrifying watching them skip across the water. Never mind, marked spot start trolling, three skirts out now. Within 5 minutes another on and lost reasonably quickly. All this continued for about an hour and a half. Total 9 marlin hookups. Score marlin 9 fisherman 0.
So being new to this marlin game would love any tips that people have learnt marlin fishing. And when I say amateur I mean it - this is so new to us. What little tips does anyone have to increase the chance of success.
Back at ramp met a couple of local guys. They had some 50 - 80 cm dollies. Great people and they tell me the next few months fishing should only get better.
Be well.
Vara
Nice report, sounds like you had a great day with the exception of not getting the Marlin to the boat.
We do have a Game section on here which would be worth a look & maybe get something out of.

Also @GoingFishinghas been getting into the Marlin fishing recently so maybe he can give you some pointers?

Nice effort.

Home made pizza bases are very quick and easy. Nothing compares to homemade.👍
Absolutely, if you don't already let it prove overnight on the fridge.
Makes a much better fully developed structure & flavour

My usual home made go to pizza made from scratch (including base)
Button mushrooms
Spanish onion
Pepperoni
Kalamata olives
Buffalo mozzarella
Anchovies
Fresh basil
Each to their own but save the pineapple for the fritters & ice cream 😁

All weather forecasts are based off computer models & most use the bom's forecast they are just easier to read. also wind predicted on land will be a lot weaker then that predicted over water. a 10km southerly may be 20km in the north parts of the bay for example.
There should have a "error margin" as they do with cyclone movement. Example of that would be a 10km westerly with 1 -5 and +7km/hr error margin in grey as seen in cyclone future movement maps.
Add the BOM disclaimer

Im not sure if your like me as in I generally trust that from the 4.20pm forecast to the 4.45am things arent going to change to much so I usually just get up & go.
But as I dont live far from the coast( & the airport) if I get up & look at the trees around my place & they are blowing around to much I generally know it will be x 4 on the water so
That again has backfired on me to as I have made the wrong call after going back to bed & getting up a couple of hours later & its a perfect day.
Wouldnt it be nice to have a better live cam view or our waterways!
I know the there is live cam's for different bars but wouldnt it be ideal just to log on & have a look while your having a coffee & bit of toast 😉
They should expand this a bit more imo.

I like the Seabreeze app myself but they all really get their info from BOM anyway, just easier to read imo.

Does anyone have any theory’s why information is incorrect and is there more accurate information available ??
Maybe because mother nature had another plan!
Dont forget we are still in a La nina weather effect & the warmer ocean temps can produce erratic or even earlier onset wind updrafts or general changes to wind speed.
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/
But yeh as Noel said, its a forecast.
I've got out in BB in my tinny at dawn & said what the hell..........................this is not what I or BOM ordered 😂
Couple of times I just turned the car around & didnt bother putting in then another couple of times I put in & said why didnt I just drive home when I had the chance....................couple of times I put in at 15knt winds & and 2 hours later it was glass.
We all roll the dice & sometimes we get snake eyes & other times we win the pot 😁

and the Hacking, up as far as Audley weir where people swim.
Absolutely.
I watched a show one day where they were over 100km up the Brisbane river & catching nearly 1mtr juvenile bull sharks for research.
Well into fresh water which is what they are known for!
The only shark that can survive in the fresh which makes it the most dangerous shark imo for that reason.............no one expects a shark to be there!

I find it funny that they seem surprised 😳
I'd be pretty confident you would find them in the further reaches of Parra River & the George's

No sign of sudden water surges where we were apart from tools on jet skis flying past!
Some quality family time & some fish to take home, cant beat that.
Looks like this was in the hacking by the background??
Not sure when they pulled the warnings but there is no current warning on BOM, but yeh between the jet ski's & the port pilot/tugs it certainly feels like a Tsunami in both the bay & hacking some days 😜

Great report & fish again 👍

Murray's Beach Boat Ramp (Jervis Bay)
in Boat Ramps (NSW)
Posted
Well like any council they will have 6 guys working on it, 3 of then supervising, 2 people on lollie pop duty & 1 guy actually doing work 🤔😂
Still you would think they would go out of their way to try & keep a ramp in service especially if there are only a couple in the area but I guess that just takes to much effort 🙄
