1. --> QUOTE(Dave B @ Oct 30 2007, 07:31 AM) 203396 I'm looking at a couple of new outfits shortly and was curious if anyone has any experience with these reels. I'm specifically interested in the VS20 for my new flats rod,and the VS65SA for highspeed (8kg) rock spinning.Any input will be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Dave. Hi Dave. I'm using a VS 45. Nice reel. Macka17
2. Hi. Any Daiwa reel would be an improvement.Without spending too much. Check out the Capricorn4500J. Or the Freams4000/4500J/Kix. Macka17
3. Just go the Garmin. Proven Reliable and good pricing. I still have my first Garmin 65 on my yacht. Still working. 15yrs old this year. GPS72 fine for a basic point to point and Position unit. They do others for Charting. Colour, and B/W. All good. Took my garmin to UK Ireland last year. Good for tracking back to car in different places. When walking round strange towns. Just follow the dotted line. Regards Macka17
4. Coupla lads here really like them. Tony's Rebel. (I reckon) gives a better dryer ride. travelling side by side. But they certainly look to be built well Myself. Going in a Seaway, and spending decent dollars. i'd be riding a good glass.. Not ally. Up here a lot of the lads are working in the mines. With. Corresponding wages. $110k plus a year Lots go for the fancy plateys. Seems to be the in thing. But very few have the ride of a good glass boat. (I've just sold my big boat. Legs getting too bad nowadays) But... If you ever travelled in an Allison. Edencraft. Cruise Craft. Even a Haines. in a GOOD seaway. You wouldn't even look at a tinnie, of any description. By the time they built to handle /Travel like a Glass boat. They as heavy as. and the only real advantage they have is bouncing off things. Just as heavy, needing just as many horses to push them along. I have a tinny. Stacer. 5.25. Just a littlie. Compromise for sea and dams. It's a bowrider. Great casting playform for Barra. Spanno's etc. Out wide. I go in mates bigger Glass boats mainly. As far as motors go. standard 2 str. Still cover about 65% of new motor sales. Nothing wrong with the bloody things. Lighter. Noisier. (But. Does that Really matter ?). As long as several of you going. Extra fuel used don't really matter. Till you get the BIG ones. They drink it. I have 90 Opti. Mate on same boat 90 Yammie 2 str. Uses roughly 25 ish % more than me. at 3900/4100. 19/20 knots. Bigger use more. If you can't afford both what you want. Go the boat firstly. Get that right. Most boats are good for at least 3 engines if used regularly.. Them's my thoughts anyway. Regards Macka17
5. yep. A bit pricey. Go back in a month and try again. Seriously Seafarer are one of the more Favoured boats up here in C.Q. Every 4th boat is one. I've been out in a few. Mainly the older versions. (Lot of us prefer them) Built like a brick shithouse. can't kill them, But wet in a decent seaway. Very safe though. Mate's Viking comes out with us in some real ordinary weather. Bastard catches most of the fish too. Regards Macka17
6. Yep. That with an Opti on the back. Way to go. Barcrushers a wet boat...That one looks real mean. I run a 90 Opti on the back of a Stacer 5.25. Noisier than the E'Tecs that travel with us. But more grunt, and use a fair bit less Petrol. Macka17
7. Up here we don't know what we going to get on end. I use 30lb braid on my eggbeaters and small o/Heads for on reason I have trouble tying skinnier braid.. 50 lb on my Baitcasters in dams and creeks. for Jacks and barra in the sticks. and 80lb on my serious rigs. cause we get up to 80lb Cobia and Spanno's. Plus Marlin. and all the reef fish. Jeez. It's a hard life being retired in Queensland... So little to do. Ha Ha Macka17
8. --> QUOTE(Dave B @ Sep 7 2007, 08:53 AM) 193638 I'm looking for a lighter replacement blank for my ancient Guttsbutt Ugly Stick and have come up with Pacific Composites FSU4120G-that's thePowergraph one(not the glass one which my mates have broken a few of between them) with alconites.I want to be able to cast around 60 grams for tailor, salmon, bonito, tuna etc and am looking at an Epix EFS 60, loaded with 8 kg braid-opinions on braid or mono for this job also welcome. Thanks in advance, Dave. Hi. We found the same thing years ago. 4120 cracked of at foregrip when cranking 4 to 6 oz out. We went up to 5120. Instant fix. Same stick. extra wrap. Tipped 4 inches to load it more. I used ABU 9000 2 spd. Best reel.(In those days) for tossing Mr Twisters etc. and big Pillie with Wired Star sinker. Used to pull in the big Butters too.(Mulloway) Nowadays use Saltiga Surf. Brilliant reel. In Eggbeaters, I think I'd be looking at the Okuma VS. Penn SS. Or one of the Daiwa's for decent fish Some of the lads have tries the EFS. Nice reel. but bail arms play up a bit. I Wouldn't trust one on a decrnt fish. My thoughts Macka17.
9. 34 rods, and 27 reels last count. and I've just won a Daiwa Capricorn 4500j on EBay. Don't tell missus. Please. Gawd. We get worse as we get older. 65 and not counting. Macka17
10. You still got it. I'm about to go into Rocky for another one....send me a line kiwa1706ataoldotcom
11. Hi Wigg. Regarding the Braid. Go to Chemist shop and buy a couple leather Fingerstalls.Stick one on the thumb, and away you go. macka17
12. Kingies etc. Go the TDZ 252/300. They'll handle anything you throw at them. Smaller... I have the SW 200 Also the Black Sheep 250/300. Use them on Barra in the dams mainly. Been spooled a coupla times when out on the Big Spanno's. Just for a laugh. If you can stop that first run though. You'll get them to boat. Brilliant reels. Never killed one yet. Best drag ever. Out of box. Check them out in a tackle shop. They a lot stronger than low line ones, with more capaity. Macka17
13. Hi. I have the Saltist 30 in High and low spd. Also a Torium 30. Low spd reel heaps easier/more comfortable to use when on deep fish. Surface fish, mainly the opposite Favourite is my Saltiga 40. in 4.9. Pulls in anything. Even though it keeps breaking Ian Miller Shimano 400 jig sticks (2 so far.) It's sitting on a USA Rods Boron 5 to 8 blank now. Let's see it break that one in a hurry. Macka17
14. Look also at the Daiwa Capricorn 4500J. Great strong reel. Killer drag. Boosted up for Jigging, So it'll do lots. Goes for $270-300... Macka17
15. Hi. We used to fish Butters in the mouth (Murray) and along the beaches. FSU 5120. ABU 9000 Red. 20lb Maxima. Beached a fair few of the butters 20 to 70lb that we caught those days... Spinning. and Bait (Mullet slab.) fishing. Normally about 6/7 oz bait and lead. Or 4 oz Mr Twisters.(still one of the better ones. Single tail. Red. Flecked with silver. Nowadays I'd say the Live Fibre Beach rod would be a goodie.for heavier. and I still reckon 9000 over 7ooo. It casts Better. and more line capacity. Braid backing 300ish. and topped with a good quality nylon, (I like Maxima) will give you more leeway when pulling through surf... Best of all would be the Saltiga Surf. But $$$$$. Personally I used to find that the 10,000 wobbled when winding in lures fast. 9000 better balanced. Only what I found mind. When Bait fishing at Salt Creek etc. I always took a Super Barra 7ft6in with ABU6500 and lures. Can be boring, waiting for a bite.....Be surprised what you picked up.. Regards and enjoy. It's a great sport. Macka17
16. Hi. I got the 6500's. 7000 and 9000 red. 9000 the pick for casting. 10000 too wobbly on retrieve... I'd go the 9000 for line capacity. and distance. 7000 otherwise. If you have the money.. Best of all. Is the Daiwa Saltiga Surf..... Brilliant reel, and O/S Prices not too cruel... Macka17
17. Hi. Ww live in Yeppoon. Fishing here good round the Islands. Mackay 10 times better...We take boats up there to Seaforth to fish.... Macka17
18. Hi. We use a Braid buster sit in harness.. Takes a lot of the load off.I use Saltiga 30/40. with a Shimano 400 T.Curve. and coupla Jap Jig Sticks. I'm 65 in a week. My exercise is Outrigger canoeing..I go out with the 40 to 50 yr olds..(Senior Masters) We go out 4 times a week. 1 hr or so of a weekday evening.. Sat Morning. normally do a 17 or 21km lap.at 65 strokes a minute. You are flat out. for that time. Full power, Other 4 or 5 in boat soon let you know if you're not...1 hr 20 min ish. Depending on seas... We doing Hammo (Hamilton island) Regatta this W'End. I'm in at least one sprint.500mtrs. FLAT out. 1 round the Island 16km. and the 44km Marathon.. over a coupla days It's great exercise for jigging, and all deep water fishing..You use near every muscle in your body, But Importantly.. Your body gets used to constant full on pumping with stomach, Back, legs, and shoulders.. Jigging is a LOT easier after that sport.. Plus the fun of doing it.. You mob of young kids should try it. It's fun. and hard work. And that's my advertising done for the day. Have fun. And think about it..It's better than Gym work. It's more constant. Full power and really builds up your power..Stamina.. Macka17
19. hi macka, i use my capricorn 4500J for surf fishing. Basically I cast 3-4 oz star sinker with ganged hooked pillies targetting salmon, tailor and whoever else interested. The reel doesn't look like a strong reel but once you start reeling you'll change your mind. Don't forget that this reel is designed primarily for jigging, so it has to be strong. To answer your question i use 20 lbs mono and 12 ft shakeunderwatere surf rod (rating 8-12 kg). Very confident to land any decent fish with that set up. HAving said that, 30 lbs braid will be awesome on that reel. Mate, you will like the capricorn Yep. Got it..$270 Barra Jacks Rocky..Nice looking. Just hope it's stronger than it looks. Something similar to my little favourite.. Daiwa SW 203. Tiny little thing. But it's skulldragged some huge fish in. Barra. and reefies in shallow water...Line capacity only problem there. Handles 50lb 8 wrap braid beautifully. I prefer it to my Black Sheep... macka17
20. Thank's Kelvin. Yep. I know they awesome. Had a play with a 6500 today Wrong side of a grand. Having trouble getting brain round fact of spending that much $$$$ on an Egg Beater. Mind. I have no problem spending on my Saltiga's and Alutecnos, and all the two speeds I have.. I'm going the CApricorn way. Cause it supposed to be stronger. Once I bust a couple. I'll be alright.... Mentally..... I was always brought up. Egg Beaters are for 6lb and below.....Proper reels above that..... I'll learn. Thank's again. Macka17
21. Reels I get from japan. Have 12 month Factory warranty. Supposed to be honoured all over the world.(Daiwa). Minstor and KNK. give Warranty. just send them back to them ($20/25 bucks).Heck of a lot cheaper than buying in this country....Only things I buy here nowadays, are Tackle and some of the cheaper rods. Braid is only 1/2 the price. and less. Bought from a reputable dealer. Not a problem. Regards Macka17
22. Hi Another way. Buy a Daiwa Capricorn 4500j Light jigging reel. With 2 spools. Strong as. Smooth as, and cast like a dream. With two rods. Diferent line on each spool. 30lb braid for kings/jews. and a lighter line for spinnimg.on t'other one. Reel will last forever. and rods you can upgrade at a later date.. Crystal Power tips. Ugly's, berkley, etc. It'll get you going. and you won't be frustrated with cheap reels...With the rods. Look at the Penn Sports series too. Real soft tips for casting lightish lures. and like a broom handle lower down for dragging up kings etc. I've got a 10kg one on boat. With Avet MXL on it. Pulled up some good cod with it. Spanno's too.. That's the way I'd be going.... Macka17
23. Hi. I got Opti 90.... Much better.. noisier... but more economical than E'Tecs that run with us out wide. also don't drop into Limp home mode either... Cost wise.. about the same.. Regards Macka17
24. Hi Bertrand. What stick you using it on. For what fishing. I'm going to use it for light Popping and Jigging Up here in C.Q. I was thinking 30lb Braid Backing. With 15 nylon on top... Regards. Macka17
