  1. Hey don't diss the cheap 2 dollar jigs. Ive pulled out some fat ones on the cheapest jigs. Its a shame I lost a nice squid due to the barbs coming out of the thing it self. Also a good thing to note in that video, notice when he flicks back he does not turn his hand, but uses the jerking motion of the rod to take in the line. This is a general principle which you should follow when squiding. Don't turn the reel, crank it with the jerking motion and just hold the handle with the other hand.
  2. Thanks for the input guys. Gutted if they were kings and we couldn't entice them. We were just doing a drift and came across these so I circled around them and they were around one of the markers in the harbour. When we stopped off at another marker, we saw little dots on the sonar here n there and when I threw my sabiki down, I was getting 3 - 5 snapper every go. I tried the sabiki here, live squid, pilchard, lures etc for nothing. Gotta look harder and try some more. I really want a colour GPS fish finder. This black and white one is a little harder to use, especially when trying to read the bottom. It just always seems black at the bottom which from what Ive read means a hard rocky bottom yet when the anchor comes up its covered in sand and from the distance you can tell its sand below.
  3. Hey all, Went out for a fish today. Had the right baits, tide looked good, returned with nothing. None the less the fish finder was showing what I believe are fish as they came and went but using what ever bait we had, we were unable to entice anything to hook on. Alot of bait was picked off but no hook ups. The fish finder is a Mark 5 DSI. I'm still unable to determine whats going on due to conflicting information Ive read. Some people suggest that a big fish would just appear as a dot, bait balls and balls of dots and what ever else as what ever. Well I saw these things and they got me excited. We fished this spot, as I said for nothing, had one guy zoom right between us and he through down his bait on a down rigger and did some circles for nothing also. Anyone have any input? Ive seen bait balls, and they are as people suggest, Ive also seen individual dots. Ive seen these types of things on display before but never managed to hook anything up from the pack.
  4. That sounds pretty exciting man, getting me worked up haha. Gotta get used to this DSI shit, from what Ive read big fish show up as small dots so leaves me wondering how small would a small fish show up as because I only ever see small dots. This 20m line you refer to, is it a navigational line? Is it something you guys have found? Or is it a line where the water is 20m deep from one point to the other. Next time I'm out ill take some photos of what I see on my fish finder.
  5. I can't wait man hopefully my rod is struck with luck soon, and a fish! No need to apologize, this thread is intended to source information about downrigging setup and techniques. If you don't mind me asking, where did you try your DR and get smoked? I tried from watson bay all the way to the opposite side then a run from taylor bay to that first east deep water marker and stopped. Ive rerigged a couple of my rods. Ive got an overhead abu garcia attached to a penn 15kg rod and swapped my other setup its now a shimano deep water 20lb rod with the penn live liner. The drag on the abu garcia overhead is horrid, it suffers the same problem most drags have where it feeds like really hard then gets soft. Ive got some lead blocks at home, probably weigh one up to be about 4kg and somehow rig it up. From what Ive read its gonna be a little tougher to DR inside the harbour. Everything Ive read and watched suggests when you get a hook up, your first instinct after the hookup is to get to deeper water relatively quick.
  6. Quality information here. I'm still unfamiliar with my fish finder. I am able to see fish, I can see balls of fish when they're feeding but I am unable to determine what is a big fish and what is a little fish. For the moment I think the only way I can use the DR is by trying my luck between point A and B. When we were trolling we had the boat in gear, practically idling and just pushing the boat forward. The conditions were smooth so there was no issue with keeping the boat straight. Just surprised me that I found my yakka gone when I pulled it out. I'll probably do the elastic band through the eye method next or if that fails me I'll pin it through the nose and the last hook through the back. I think I'm gonna get a lighter bomb, doesn't seem necessary to be dropping in a 10lb bomb in these parts of the harbour.
  7. That's the theory. I think they tried to clean it a while back and in 03 it was stocked. Problem is because its so easily accessible and located where it is, run off from big rains etc will push alot of rubbish and oil and other crap off the roads on the north end into the lake. Ontop of that people go there and throw crap into the water, dump their rubbish there and then you've got those who have no respect for fishing and will keep every single fish they pull out of there. I recall it was stocked with about 5000 bass. Theres probably nothing left. There was some algae in there which killed alot of the fish off. Lets hope the DPI releases some information, and fish, into that lake soon. Also how much of the heavier shit is stuck in the sediment at the bottom of the lake is also a concern for pollution. That shit doesn't go away unless its dredged out.
  8. Hey everyone just seeking some information about the correct method of using the downrigger. I went out yesterday, caught nothing, trying the new downrigger. I read all this fancy stuff online about wind on leaders snap swivels flurocarbon leaders etc but I ignored all this and went this a basic setup. 80lb mono leader straight to the flurocarbon. I was using about 2m of leader. Using a size 5/0 hook I pierced a yellow tail through the hard part of the nose, I set it down in the water as were moving forward at maybe 2 - 4km/h. I let it drift back about 10 - 15m then clipped the line and dropped the bomb in, applied pressure and set the drag. We trolled around for about 10 minutes just on the way back home. I decided to pull out the line gently winding the rod until it unclipped, then I felt no weight. My yakka came off. Ive pierced them through the nose and casted them off land before and never had them come off. The questions time: Is my setup correct? Is it necessary to run a wind on leader attached to a swivel attached to flurocarbon? How much line do I put between the bait and the bomb? Is this the correct method of attaching yakka for trolling? Is it too late to be trying to use the downrigger in the harbour? Not yet gutsy enough to get outside the heads. This is the first time Ive fished off the boat in the harbour for zilch. Can always get the baits, but never get the fish. The population of undersized snapper is something to behold. The bomb I'm using is 10lb and using with that 200lb stainless wire. The rod is a 15kg shimano something and the reel is a penn 750ll with carbontex drag and 50lb 5m marked braid. From what Ive read I'm meant to tighten the line on the rod until there is a good bend. That's not easy with this rod, its pretty damn stiff. Anyone recommend a good medium to heavy rod which won't set me back an arm and leg?
  9. Thats not too bad. I went there a while back trying to catch anything there, on fly and on baits. No luck. The ducks kept stealing all the carp burley I put in. I read yellow belly.... surely there isn't yellow belly's in that lake? Did you fish just at the car park or did you hike around.
  10. Ive heard of an absolute shit ton of anchors lost there. Just of south head north of sow n pigs. I just drift. Not sure why no anchoring. Check maritime maps.
  11. Wrap a piece of aluminium foil around a jig head and cast into a school of choppers, you'll get some.
  12. Theres a combined bag limit of ten with no written restrictions. They're fine to take.
  13. Just check out the change log. Any firmware update for any product is required to give a change log. Your firmware versions are exactly the same so it might just be the addition of optional sample data.
  14. Check out what the plate says. If your on or close enough then youll be fine.
  15. If you want to keep the octopus for a feed just do what ever it takes to get the jig out. Grab the line flip him and try to quickly get the jig out. Then let him crawl away or if you wanna eat him grab him by the head and belt it full strength against the rocks. Some people say its cruel but I always see people do this. I tried to cut its head off one time. No chance. Not with those tentacles. He will try bite you if he gets the chance. Octopus tentacles are gun bait for snapper and flathead.
  16. I use willy weather and it has let me down a couple times but more often than not its good enough. I went out on 9 knot winds. They were raging at 52km per hour after getting out there.
  17. Good stuff man. I would have crapped my pants if I couldn't find my keys. First thing I'd think is they're at the bottom of the ocean.
  18. His mix reactions make this ****** awesome. I would have shit my pants right then and there.
  19. I know where I plan to go when going on a fishing trip. Look at those fish!
  20. Those are some colourful fish. Ive never seen some of those before and if I caught them I probably would have thrown them back because I'd have no idea what they are!! I need to learn some more on these fish species. Your hard day looks like one of my awesome days.
  21. Awesome stuff man. Is your boat a stacer searay?
  22. Is the stones an actual place or is that a covert name for a location. I tried to spin off the curl curl ledge, I can't foresee landing a fish there. Nice stuff man.
  23. Ive seen people fishing live squid, Ive done it two, usually 1 hook through the rip or one through the tip and through the head. Even with one hook in the hood, they die in about 5 minutes when they hit the water.
  24. Absolute haunting of rays there too. If you tread in the water be careful. Most of the times they get out of the way but those ugly electric rays don't like to move. It would have been epic to see that salmon kick out of the water like that.
  25. If you are going to return a jewie its best to snip the line. As soon as they come out of the water their chance of survival drops massively. I think the figures ar w on the fisheries website. But thats a nice feed. He isn't too big but he will feed you a couple times over. Congrats man now show us a 10kg model.
