  1. How the shit did you bust off with 80lb line? What leader? I'd assume at least 60lb leader and if thats the case, skull drag that fish out haha. Taylors bay is relatively shallow, so to speak and if you were near the edge its pretty reefy(I land fish there, absolute shit ton of snag spots). Should have locked up to keep them well away from anything. What size hook? That's top stuff getting that many hookups but unfortunate on the bust ups but hot damn free kingfish, I guess the other chap saw your efforts were paid off. Seems interesting though, he gave you his smaller fish which was 103cm. Not very often you hear of schools of kings in the 1m range that close in... Too many questions to ask, too tired to type them!
  2. I use them and I've caught fish. I don't know how much effect it has but I find it has an impact on bigger paddle tail plastics, the hole plastic wobbles around rather thab the tail paddling and i believe its due to the extra pivot point at the clip. Wrigglers work just fine. Sometime though if the jig head twists in the clip, it won't swim right until you correct it. I find my self swapping lures and jig heads often and really wanna spend less time cutting an snipping.
  3. Top stuff man. I can believe what you say when you say the jewfish swam off with bream following him. Ive seen jewfish caught and with immediate succession, bream caught. Bream and flathead are the biggest bicatch when fishing for jews, apart from the stingrays. Couple days ago I caught my first bream on plastic. I was cheering, it was well over legal too and compared to catching it the old typical way(heavier gear with bait and sinker) its an absolute blast. When we were trying, I was flicking out every colour vibe. Some el cheapos which in the past I have had hits on but also some tt in goldish colour which Ive seen videos of people catching them on. I couldn't get a touch. Ive got a river2sea popper which in the right situation could entice a bream but I wouldn't hold my breath on it all too often. You've also got the river2sea rover lure which is similar to the popper but the head of the lure is angled down which should give it abit of a down push action with the same effects as a popper. Next objective for me is to catch a bream on a vibe or any hard body lure. Ive seen a bream caught by some other guy on a vibe. It was a red coloured head with a plastic looking opaque pearl colour body.
  4. This happened. Then some others who claimed to be the original owners came and stabbed and beat up the other guys. It's unfortunate about the entrance. We used to go there years back during holidays was great fun. Now it's disgusting thanks to the people who go there and show no respect to anyone or anything.
  5. I've been harassed about this a few times by police boats doing inspections on jetties. They waited about 15 minutes for a mate to return because I had 1 too many rods with only two setup and one in the water. Its a patchy rule so the way I see it is either you get lucky with an enforcer who interprets it as you do or you can convince them you're right if they interpret it the other way. I never see a need to ever be carrying more than 3 rods in any given situation. I plan my day and take what I need.
  6. Ive had this happen many times, the beak bite behind the head. I tried the squid spike and I swear to you they do not touch yakka when they are dead. I bet you're striking pretty hard when you get the thump on the rod. Don't strike. Retrieve it as slow as you can and you will find very often this works, the squid will be hanging onto the yakka. From there you can either net the bastard(I'm land based so limited with reach) or you can drop a squid jig next to him and see if you can entice him onto that. Definitely not shark.
  7. Its hard to say. Prized in what way? For the fight they give? For the effort needed to catch one? I don't know what its like to fight a 1m fish of either of those species but the only jewfish Ive caught which flopped at just over 70cm was a pretty damn lazy fish. Felt like a port jackson, heavy swimmer with the odd headshake. But again at the same time it was my only jewfish in about a year of trying which made it all the more awesome. My first season trying for a king, I got a king and for a little rat it fought like a machine. Similar rod out fit. Those kings fight very nice but at the same time a aussie salmon can have you believing you might be onto a king, until he pops the surface. I think the jewfish is more of a prized fish catch as, I believe, they are much harder to come by. If the season is right for kings and you've got the bait, chances are you'll get one. If the weather, the moon, the tide and the bait is right for a jewfish, you have a good chance of coming home empty handed.
  8. That's the thing I'm not yet sure what I want to target. My initial plans were to target fish in fresh water around streams, even get up into some dams and what not. Then I went to youtube and saw videos of guys tearing up the harbour with their fly fishing gear. Where do the big costs come in? Last time I was over at tackleworld checking out fly fishing gear, any rod I touched had a price tag in excess of $500! When I checked eBay I found a bag of results. But because I know nothing about this stuff, there are alot of pre made combos which maybe have generic gear or what ever but they have everything setup to get you out there. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SALTWATER-FLY-FISHING-STARTER-COMBO-OUTFIT-rod-reel-line-backing-leader-fly-loop-/290676609820?pt=AU_FishingRods&hash=item43adad131c That one looked like a nice piece and it says its suitable for salt water. Ive just been watching alot of videos on the net and on TV and really am keen to give this a try. It might be a short phase but I feel I must wet a fly line!
  9. Hey all, Ive been watching alot of fly fishing videos and I wanna get into it. I like to try new things all the time and this really got me interested but as expected, I have NO idea about anything to do with this stuff. From what Ive read its best to go with a 5 or 6 weight rod and line which is heavier at the front or something. Ive got a fly rod at home but its been hacked up and stuffed into a spinning reel butt lol. Ebay has a few kits from pfleuger and some other brands. I don't want to spend too much maybe $100 - $150 for a "everything you need" kit. If I don't like it, ill just pack it up and leave it for another time. Any advice would be great.
  10. Holy smokes top stuff man. 11hrs effort but hell if that were me, that 11hr effort paid off. Top stuff man. Surprised you didn't get yelled at by the guy patrolling the area at clifton. Ive seen almost every boat which goes near that place cop an ear full from that guy. If only the weather would play along. Check out the winds coming up for the next week. What's going on?!
  11. Top stuff man. Looks like a feast there. Quick question about your rod, what action is it rated for? Is it the heavier t curve or lighter ones?
  12. I know nothing about this style of fishing but damn I'd be nervous having a 100kg marlin at the end of my line, in open seas, in a tinny haha. Top stuff. They are a prized catch. From what I've seen the guy who is reeling does just that, reeling. There is aways a chap high up in one of those seats with binoculars shouting shit out. Prior to catching it, I think you gotta get the fish excited, bring him to the top and keep him up with berly trails. A friend of mine from high school went out with his brother, this was years back, they caught 400kg marlin. Took the best part of 2hrs to get in after using about 4kg of pilchards. They also used hookless lures trailling from the boat to entice the fish. Funny, when you look at the math of it, 24kg line with 18kg drag and a 100kg fish which when it swims at full force will apply significantly more than 6kg of pressure onto the line + the 18kg drag. I'm surprised the line didn't bust. Also 18kg drag, is that sufficient to get the fish tired? Maybe heavier line(24kg is what, 50lb?), go with 80 or even 100 pound line and try get more drag pressure on. Think about it, if you hooked a 200kg marlin, would that fight have been over straight away? Also consider that your 100kg label is only an estimate, he may have been a 150, 200, 250kg fish you never know. Look at when you target your "normal" fish. Ive caught a 75cm kingfish before which weighed in at a few kg. My drag was applied at about 6kg and the fish was stripping the line.... 100kg fish with 18kg drag... again I think heavier line, more drag and the fish will be exhausted quicker and reluctant to go down. Then you attract a near by shark after fighting so long which takes a stab at the fish. When you said it pulled the hooks, did they bend open? What hooks did you use? Was it lure or trolling a live bait behind? There might also be something in the gear ratio in the reel. Maybe when the fish dives you use a lower ratio to slowly inch back any line you can.
  13. Maybe that's why I caught nothing when we hired thay last boat. People say the same thing about bug spray. I drench my self with repellant when I need it and it hasn't hindered fishing. Test it one day when you're catching. Next bait put a some on your hands and touch your bait.
  14. That is a big bream, look at its lips! Top stuff. What's an EP?
  15. Was this land based? I haven't been fishing this whole week because I've got no idea where to try. If it's not too secret can you or anybody shoot me a pm about some land spots in botany I could flick plastics? Nice fish man.
  16. I never thought to measure it, I'll do that now, the advertisement stated 5m. I took the line off the spool again and this time applied significantly more tension, I can probably fit another "20" metres on it. Just checked, the line is coloured every 5m.
  17. Hey all, Ive got a Penn 560. On the spool it suggests you can get on about 185M of 0.45mm line. I loaded it up with 0.37 braid marked at 5m intervals and it only took 75m. Did I do something wrong? Is this reel talking out its arse to me? I applied tension with my hands as I have no spooling machine to apply the tension for me. I also can't see a chance in tension allowing > 110m of line going on. Any ideas? Anyone else got the same reel and know how much they fit on? The old line I had was 0.35 and the spool was marked at 137m in length and it took all that. Could this interval thing be a wrong?
  18. Nice catches man really impressive. What do people do with marlin. Are they catch and release or table fish?
  19. If you run 50LB with say a 70LB leader, you should be able to lock up and skull drag that fish out. If your reel doesn't have the drag power, use your thumb to slow or stop him. Such heavy gear, I wouldn't give that fish a chance to run because of how dirty they are. Bad luck but at the same time top effort to have some big fish take the baits.

    rego sticker

Is this the boat number sticker on the side of the boat like a number plate? Where do we get those from?

    Hill 60

Which point is hill 60? Is it the one with the sewage treatment right behind it or the one slightly north just a little green point sticking out? I wanna try that spot but from the images looks like a snag haven, but I'm waiting for the one time year fishers to pack their shit up and go home.
  22. That's a nice flatty. They always put up the same act when bait fishing for them. I land fish and when we have baits out(livies and squid) and we see big movement then a whole lot of nothing, its almost always a flatty. Pretty weird fish, eat and sit. I had one out on a 40m cast. When I reeled it in, it was all slack, the fish literally swam towards the bank about 5 metres out. Top stuff with the squid too!
  23. I find they occur mostly when fishing really light lures or plastics and reeling a lot of loose slack. Sometimes you don't need to cut the line. Wet it abit with saliva and give each end of the line a strong pull and they often come loose. They are knot per say but more like a nest of line. Welcome to fine braid.
  24. Dang nice to find a landbased location where you can actually get a hook up on a fish with plastics! Mine all get chomped up by little fish. Still trying to find somewhere worth using them, feels like a waste feeding these small fish. Top stuff man. That track behind you looks awfully familiar but I have my doubts its where I'm thinking of lol.
