  1. Roseville goes alright. it has been on and off lately. Same deal with The Spit. try chucking a squid jig out on the south western side and just let it sink and drift in the current. you will need a quick retrieve especially as the jig passes the rocks close to shore as it will snag, not particularly on rocks or kelp, but it will snag discarded fishing line and it is such a pain.
  2. i think me and my mates were the young fellas near the bridge. lucky you, yesterday was dead. gotten salmon, travs, blackies, bream other few seasons. fished exactly same techniques for donuts yesterday.
  3. I don't know about that area, but seriously just keep an eye out when you go fishing. Go for a walk and check things out if you think you can see some. That's how I found reliable sources of bait.
  4. it was removed a few days ago by a team with chainsaws.. ew.
  5. i tried to eat one and it was probably the worst idea i ever had. rather just go buy an eraser and eat that. im sure with the right know-how sydney octopus could be a delicious meal. i heard they sell for $10 ea. at markets.
  6. if your heading toward the bridge from the south you can take a left just before the bridge into the marina shop and park down near the waters edge. you can walk under the bridge to the southern east side and theres a little beach. might have to carry the yak 20metres or so, not sure about parking on this side.
  7. yea mate the fishing part is fenced off last time i was there. had a site office and everything. the top of the swimming enclosure is also fenced off
  8. yea balmoral has been doing quite well. its under construction now, but i usually casting from the fishing wharf down the side of the wharf towards the shore. theres a weed bed in the shallows, then an edge, then another weed bed, plus the structure of the wharf. ideal for squid. managed to get 6 last week, all from shallows over weed beds. also got a huge octopus which i thought was going to be the world record squid cus of its weight. but it was an occy
  9. head to areas around mosman, the spit, balmoral, clifton gardens, even wharfs near harbour bridge do well. when fishing new areas i use 10lb fluro so i can get an idea of the snags and if i do get snagged have a better chance pulling it out.
  10. sounds like an awesome day! best blackie ive bagged is a 39cm, every sesh im trying to push the 40cm mark but hasnt happened yet! love to here more about your smoking method. what 'sticks' have you got going in the foil? other than that i have the gist of it.
  11. got two trevally tonight at roseville. burely with tuna, bread and sand. bait was fresh uncooked prawn.
  12. thanks guys that's very helpful. ill give the little green hooks a try, i was using a very small long shank and the shaft would eventually become exposed. used 7lb flurocarbon leader. well over a metre of it.
  13. the long stringy stuff. had some good quality so it easily wrapped and stayed on the hook.
  14. went to chowder bay for a blackie sesh this morning. had a quick squid at spit bridge while collecting weed/bait. managed to get two lil arrows. was hoping for some calamari but i got some good bait now i guess. got to chowder a bit too early, sun was just rising, couldnt really make out my float but as soon as it was day time, around 7 o clock i had my first down. managed to bag 5 keepers and let a 27cm and 25cm fish go. only managed seven fish given the huge schools of 15-20 swimming around. started to get really frustrating as a school would circle my bait and not take it, also noticed fish coming up from the depths for my bait and then bailing from it last second. any ideas? are they seeing hook or leader or something? anyway after long periods of 'teasing' eventually one would drag the float down. last catch was a nice 36cm specimen which would be a PB for me. there were some huge fish in the schools but appeared to be shy and cautious. left just before 1200. wharf was getting crowded, another fisho was catching huge trevallys, he caught and released about 3. cheers.
  15. hey mate, it was a calm, sunny, clear day. after sunrise at hightide. fish were still biting when i left on the runout tide. i was fishing from the wharf in the corner where the front bit joins the swimming pool thing. they seem to like the structure, especially the shark net and venture out when you put you bait in.. water was deep as on hightide, but you could easily see bottom and all the fish!
  16. Headed over to roseville bridge area tonight at around 8pm. me and a mate were itching for a fish so low tide fish it had to be. i had a huge feeling that this night would be an enormous waste of time with not even a nibble. arrived before my mate and sent out uncooked coles prawn pieces and was getting instant bites. had a few fish on but they would shake off. my mate arrived and i managed to get several small tailor and bream. suddenly my mates rod buckles and starts taking line on a set drag. it was a quick but powerful fight and a large 60cm salmon emerges from the depths, im panicking trying to land the fish as it drags the line over oyster beds, but successfully landed and we are stoked to find such a fish. continue fishing, several tailor and bream. mate then gets a nice trevally. turned out to be an exiting sesh, was surprised given the low tide. try get pics up tomorrow. cheers.
  17. http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=23679 this helped me a lot to get onto my first blackies. if you have weed try clifton gardens during the day, from the wharf. you need long sections of weed to wrap onto the hook and get it to hold nicely. the link above will show you how to make a rig and its a matter of getting it in the water, burley up a bit, and in no time a school will be hanging around and you will notice the pencil float slowly go under, wind up slack and carefully lift rod to set hook. from the wharf, given clear conditions, you can easily see the fish and would be good practice to get the feel for your float and the behaviour of the fish. im a rookie and managed to get several blackies on my first session at clifton gardens, not overly difficult fish to target so great fun!
  18. i dont like sinkers on braid. but tying braid to swivels does work, knot can slip easily though so add heaps of loops to knots.
  19. my mate has been having luck in pittwater around palm beach. i managed to zip up that way and got a decent cal. theres heaps of red arrows around the wharf, always seem to go home with some arrows at least. guess you have to be right place at the right time
  20. Thanks heaps!!! really liking this silstar. cant wait to get it and hit the water!
  21. cheers mate, had a look and seems like an awesome rod. a mate told me to steer clear of graphite until i get more experienced, as any wrong moves will shatter the rod. silstar powertips are fglass/graphite composite, would this be okay?
  22. cheers mate. yea the penn reel is on sale for a reasonable price including some free braid! but ill definitely keep on looking around. i guess the main issue im having is matching a reel to the rod but i think im getting the idea.
  23. Hi all, I am keen to begin targeting some larger fish species and have been looking for an economical first combo. I have come across a Penn Spinfisher 950SSM 300yr/30lb and a Shimano Aerowave FGlass - Med-Hvy Surf WB ; 3.78m ; 2pc ; 6-10kg ; 2-5oz. The reel has max drag at 15lb and rod has max line cap at around 22lb. so i should be able to reel up some 20lb or 30lb braid and go for some mulloway and then kings in the summer. the combo is just under $200. sound like im on the right track?? Cheers all.
  24. still gets crowded in winter mate. get in early and your in for some fish.
