  1. Hello all !!!! looks like a great forum with heaps of info

We are new to boating and have never owned a boat before. As a child my father always had a boat and he still has it an old Pongrass with a I think a 25HP Yamaha.

Anyway I have been doing a bit of research and been looking at boats. The requirements are

    • Capable of going a few K's offshore fishing (for me)
    • Capable of being a champagne boat for pottering around the harbour with wife and a couple of friends Lying down in the sun
    • Not to small your tripping over each other
    • Not to big to tow I have a TRD Hilux that can only tow 2.25T
    • Possible Skiing ( I use to ski when I was younger and may try again)

So the boat that seems to fit

    A Quintrex Cruiseabout 610

Now for the Motor I am so confused

    I like speed so should I be looking at a 200HP or is a 150HP ok ?

What are the advantages of 2 stroke over 4 stroke ? I understand 2 stroke no longer needs you to mix the fuel like before

Are the Quintrex any good I had a look at a new one and was surprised at the dirty stained upholstery and it was straight off the truck really shouldn't have gotten through Quality control. Reminded me of a new Jayco we bought and sold 3 years later. Everything was there but the workmanship lacked, you really only noticed when you look closely. It drove me nuts

    option list so far

    rear door

    trailer spare wheel

    table

    extended Bimmi with clears

    live bait box

    bait board

    casting deck

    Deep sounder (no idea here)

Should we get It painted or show I get it wrapped?

Am I on the right track ?

We will be heading to the boat show to check out other boats any other suggestions

    Hey mate, Welcome aboard!

I will try and go through your list for you.

First of all you have mentioned how you will like to fish a few kms outside - I wouldn't consider a bowrider then which is the cruiseAbout. At first it looks very appealing, lounging at the front etc and it is the same thought I had when I first began. When you go offshore you want a high cockpit to take on the waves, yes you can do it on a bowrider but you wouldn't enjoy it as much. You will feel better being higher up.

a 5M + cabin boat is what I think you need. Yes it is still a champagne boat! You definitely want over 5m if you want a bit of room and you will be fine towing it too. With the cabin boat you will have bunks to rest, hide from the sun and drink champagne while lying down :P

These boats can come with a ski pole so not a problem there. Not sure about the dining table (if that is what you meant) as an option, but they can be done after market if not.

Now the motor! If you like speed, power then you are like me... you will like 2stroke. 2S motor's these days are oil injected, more torque, lighter that a 4S, cheaper to service. 4S are great too, great fuel economy, quite but you won't have the hole shot performance of the 2S. These days either way you are fine, just comes down to what you like, what your dealer offers. Depends on the boat you get, you will get a range of HP to put on the back, I always go for maximum power but don't forget to consider the balance of the boat, a lot forget that and then have a bum heavy boat. Try and find a good balance.

Stacer make a good range of boats, look into the Sea Runner.

I know what you mean about the boats condition when they are new. They been sitting there for ages in the sun, rain etc so they get dirty. Too many boat too clean!

I would prefer to get it wrapper or leave it white. Have a look at the boats with coloured hulls that have had some minor accidents/scratches. Makes it easier to stand out.

  2. How often do you replace tyres?

Got my trailer second hand in 2009, not changed since then. Trailer was originaly bought in 2004.

I probably habve the original tyres on.

So are mine, 2005. I feel a lot safer with new ones!

  3. Hello Raiders!

    Let's get deep then!

So tyres have a manufacture date on them, after speaking to few people the lifespan is about 5 years especially since they don't get used that often. Sit in the garage and sag.

I had a leaking tyre and I know if you leave it like that it will damage the sidewalls. My tyre kept going flat and I kept on pumping it up. I knew I had to get new tyres but was waiting on the new rims to arrive first. Don't want to do the job twice.

Jumped on the freeway and had a blowout. All good, had all the tools until I realised the rubber had wrapped around the disc. Couldn't get it off with what I had so called up the marine club and they came out to help.

    Here is the tyre!

So I am going to replace all 5, just want a good brand. So far Nakang seem to be popular and that is what I have.

Also was advised to have tyre pressure at 36psi but on the tyres it states 60psi. After doing some reading I think people agree to have it close to the rating so 50psi would be good. But not sure about this!

  4. Hi Ray,

Welcome to the forums! What kind of boat? Glass or Aluminium? Do you launch and retrieve on your own?

There are some winches that have 3 gears. Might be overkill, but will definitely make it a lot easier to winch one.

Other option is to get the electric, but just thought I would mention the above option first since it is cheaper.

  5. Do you take your boat empty when you go fishing? :P

I went through all this when i got my last boat. Seafarer Victory 6.0. I have taken it to the weigh bridge. 2.2 T with minimum gear and fuel.

But i havent done a big trip yet. Which means, camp gear, full tank on car 180l, full tank on boat, rods, tackle etc. the day I do I will go to the weighbridge. As for now i am safe.

  6. After running out of brakes in a Mitsubishi Magna wagon loaded with 4 adults and a child coming down the Bells Line of Road 20 years ago I quickly learnt to use engine braking. I tow my 5m tinny up and down the state a few times a year, loaded with camping gear once a year, in my Toyota Aurion. I engine brake as much as possible, particularly around the Hawkesbury and Bulli on the M1.

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I had no brakes along that road too. I was on my way to Bathurst when the master cylinder went. I could stop but took a while. When I got into the town I realised how slow I had to go. I couldn't come to a complete stop at a run about and a lady was yelling at me! I waited until night to drive home and luckily there were no cars on the road that night. By then I knew my stopping distance, but still not the best thing.

  7. On another site, a big guy said he had problems. I'm about 110kg and a bit cautious.

Right now it has what I presume are standard folding seats, but I would really like a backrest.

I can't help but notice that your avatar has a guy on a seat!! :P

What sort of problems did he have? Seat was too narrow? Base moved a lot? If you take what he has experienced maybe you can work on it. Make sure you have a good floor for starters. The box seat with storage is a good idea if you have the room. I hated mine at first, but love it now.

  8. I recently purchased a Nautiglass 170 and am so impressed with it.

But it has what I presume are the original seats. No back and they fold down against the side of the boat.

I would really like to install seats with a backrest (yes, I'm an old codger), but read some off-putting reports on seats with a centre swivel pedestal.

Can I fit a backrest to the original seats, or should I replace them with said swivel seats.

    Comments and ideas appreciated.

    Thanks.

What did you read that was off putting?

  9. When i used tp get fiahing magazines there used to be a mob in liverpool that had heaps of motors. Cant remember their name.

But another idea, jump on facebook and look for fishing groups. They sell all kind of stuff. Have seen motors on sale.

  10. Same thing happened to me last year. The kingies had a school of bait up against the wall.

    Me without a rod.

When I told Seamus and Gianni they said 'Keep a rod in the car'.

It was my work ute. I said 'too tempting to go fishing when I should be working.'

Now I have a company ute, my ute has my plastics rod and gear ready to go for next time.

And have you come across a school since?

  11. Hey mate,

Have you thought about what you plan on doing with the boat? Bowrider and cabin will provide different activities.

My friend used to have a Savage bow rider, was good, no issues there. But we couldn't take that outside the heads. Too low, cop waves over the top all the time etc. If you go fishing, you have people fishing from the bow and the rear, gets a bit messy. Just things you need to consider: are you really going to use that lounge at the front? Or is that more for the family days? These boats don't have the same protection if you do wish to fish outside. The cabin boat will be heaps better.

I was in this position many years ago and was leading towards a bowrider but after writing a list I went with the cabin.

My friend has a Haines Signature Bow rider, he loves it, but when it comes to fishing it's uncomfortable and he doesn't like going outside.
