  1. Get well soon Donna, All the best. Cheers David.
  2. That is just terrifying..... no way, no thanks.
  3. An amazing story... one of the best I've read and surely worthy of a place in modern fishing magazine! Cheers David.
  4. Hey Glenn, I fish the weir a fair bit and this is what I do. I start at the rowing club and fish all the way down to the wier first up. As you walk there are breaks in the trees which allow you to get down to the edge of the bank where you can cast. I generally fire a couple of casts to the left in close and along the bank. A couple strait out and then a couple to the right in close along the bank again. If I don't get any action, I move to the next spot. When I get to the wier I go past it and fish the other side. You can fish just the other side of the wall under the trees and keep bush bashing your way down river. There's a path for a while with obvious tracks down to the water. Just keep walking though it depends on how adventurous you're feeling. It does become a bush bash after a while and its also a bit smelly and unpleasent in places, especially with the rain. Anyway, give it a go, if the bass play its good fun. You can fish for carp just about anywhere as you'll notice when you're walking. A certain spots there are piles of scales where people have been scaling them. In terms of bass, surface lures cast into the holes in the weed or spinner baits fished along the sides of the weed banks work well. Good luck and let us know how you go. Cheers David.
  5. Jon mate.... you're on fire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well done a great day. Good to see you getting out and having a good go. Where did you get your yakka's (Balmoral I presume) and did you give the sabiki rigs a go??? Cheers mate. Dave.
  6. That's a sensational Bass and if it did indeed come out of the Nepean that's a special and rare catch for that area. Anything around the 40cm mark is considered a good fish down there so that's a once in a blue moon fish. I was down there today at dawn with Andy and hooked one bass in an eddy near the bank down stream just past the weir where the water still runs pretty quick. It was a good fish and managed to get into the faster current and the hook pulled. I've never seen a Bass that big come out of the nepean in the years I've been fishing for Bass down there. It's great to know they are down there
  7. G'day Jon, Mate, it makes absolutely no difference which one you buy, just make sure you scent it with prawn scent and burley. A steady trail of burley to keep them busy and you're good to go. I've tried different colours, pink, yellow, white and the little rubber pink ones and they all work equally well as long as you scent them. Just the el-cheapo prawn scent about $6 a bottle is fine. I generally just buy the Jarvis Walker white feather ones for about $1 each. You need to scent the jig every 3 or so drops. I lay it on the bait board and give each of the jigs a squirt then back in the drink. I can generally fill the livie tank in about 15 minutes (so long as the yakka are there of course!!). I've also caught trevally, bream etc etc on them and they hold up fine. Cheers David.
  8. Yep, no problem... But my comment "Geoff, you haven't changed a bit"... referred to my mate Geoff with the small boat at Currarong in the earlier reply....
  9. Ok... check these out... Geoff and I making sinkers and me with a reddie at Currarong. Both taken a loooooooooong time ago now! I can kind of remember making the sinkers but I have absolutely no memory of the reddie.... Cheers David.
  10. Gee that black triangle there in water looks like a "fin"....! Geoff, you haven't changed a bit. I'll have to talk to my mum and get some pics of me as a kid holding fish! Cheers David.
  11. G'day mate, I just had to write and say that was a sensational effort. I pointed you out to Geoff as you were fighting the king with the broken rod... I say's to Geoff, hey, have a look at where the top section of that bloke's rod is........ We were a bit busy ourselves so didn't see you land the fish, to be honest I didn't think you would but very glad to see you did. Legend. Cheers David.
  12. Hi Dave, Really nice to meet you and your young fella. It was our pleasure to hand over the yakka's, any time. Get yourself a bait jig and a cheap bottle of prawn scent and you'll be right. See ya next time. Cheers David.
  13. G'day mate - yep, I pointed you out to Geoff when you were fighting that fish with the broken rod. We had a quiet chuckle but it looked like you were doing OK. Thanks for kind comments everyone - yes, we had a fantastic day. Can't wait to get out there and upset some kingfish again soon.... Cheers David.
  14. Hi Guys and Girls, Just a quick report on our morning. Geoff and I had a great day... Registered at a respectible 6:45am , had the best Bacon and Egg roll I've ever had and headed over to Watsons Bay for Yakka. Had about 25 in the tank in double quick time, gave some to our new mate Dave and his son who we were tag teaming with today and off we went. Over to South Head slow trolling the yakka. We don't have a down rigger so used trolling sinkers - geez they work well. Saw others boating kings but they alluded us so it was back into the wave bouy and the action came thick and fast. In all, we boated two kings - 67 and 68cm and I got absoutely bricked by a king that found the bottom. I don't think I was a chance at all....... But what a buz. So... it was a sensational morning and I've just finished BBQ king cutlet and baked veges the did me. Here's a pick of me stoked with a nice king. Cheers David.

    Strikes...

Definately mate..... But on the fishing side of things.... i couldn't agree more. As soon as someone on board puts a rod down or looks the other way - bang, hit. If things are quiet, I'll actually put the rod in the holder and go up the front of the boat and have a sandwich or a drink. If that doesn't bring the fish on its time to go home... Its a funny thing and everyone who fishes regularly will say the same thing. As soon as you're not paying attention, a fish appears. Needs some scientific study or thingo done I'd say.... Cheers David.
  16. G'day again, I'm not sure what the best thing to do is but obviously it needs to come off so you can put some backing on before the braid. I haven't actually had this problem before but I'm guessing if you wind it back off the reel onto the spool the same way it came off that should be fine. I'm sure others will have some better advice in due course so perhaps hold off until more people reply. Good luck with it. Cheers David.
  17. G'day mate. You definately need mono backing on your spool. It does prevent the braid slipping on the spool. Also, if you've only used a spool of fireline to fill your reel, I bet the reel looks like it could use a lot more line???? Line twist when spooling your reel means pretty much that. The line twists as your loading your reel and so your first cast will end in a big birds nest as the twisted line attempts to peel off during the cast. I follow the spooling directions on the box of fireline and it seems to work fine. Your local tackle shop can offer a lot of help in this area and can spool reels for you as well. Cheers David.
  18. G'day, I have a small Okuma (an avenger) as well as a Daiwa Samurai which I've had for a few years now and they are still going strong. The Samurai is in the pic below (also my Avatar)... I look after them very well and don't treat them too hard but I've caught loads of bream, flatties, big trevors, bass, salmon and the list goes on. I fish 4lb fireline on the Avenger and 6lb spiderwire stealth on the Samurai and they both go great. Cheers David.
  19. G'day Pete, No mate, all OK. A few things blown around the yard and the trees have a few less leaves but otherwise all good. We've had storm after storm tonight so that sounds pretty right. I'm just very very glad the hail wasn't any bigger. If it was and driven by the wind it would have been very bad. Cheers David.
  20. We copped it really good here. Hail (small to medium size) and we've had 40mm of rain (according to my rain guage) since about 4.00. The most damaging part was the wind. It was blowing the rain and hail horizontal to the ground the the hail was hitting the windows and everything went flying.... We've got another storm here at present with very loud thunder, heavy rain but the wind isn't anything like it was. Big afternoon!!! Cheers David.
  21. G'day mate, Surf poppers indeed work a treat. Here's a report of my first Salmon caught of the beach on one in the colour you've got. http://fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=24596 Rig them on a paternosta rig. Use a pillie on ganged hooks on one dropper and the popper on the other. The pillie attracts the fish and they take the popper... that's the theory anyway. Cheers David.
  22. G'day.... we didn't get our intended target no.... despite all our livies we couldn't lose one to a king. Obviously live / fresh squid was the go.... next time Cheers David.
  23. Saw that king landed... looked like great fun and a nice fish. Cheers
