  1. I have caught some reasonably large ones on bread in the past. I found them to be very smart animals - they would only ever bite if I was very stealthy and sneaked up on them. Others will probably know more about this than me though.
  2. Hi all, just caught a bream, a tailor and 2 squid in the space of 15 minutes on the bottom in 10m among the Pearl Bay moorings. All good size too. Also caught this one, 35cm with lots of evil looking teeth. Any idea what it is?
  3. Note on Longy - I helped a yakker who got wiped in the surf coming in near the ramp on sunday, it wasn't funny and he lost his rods too. Be super careful ocean side!
  4. I caught a 60 cm flatty at Northbridge a few days ago, and a sole and a whiting last week but otherwise no great successes. That said I'm learning SP so it's prolly me! Keep at it mate I'm sure they're around the corner. There are many water access points around Sailors bay and sugarloaf bay, Google Earth does wonders.
  5. Whitworths sells high quality epoxy. It's a much tougher and durable material than varnish. but it's very poor at UV protection, which is why timber boat tragics like me still use stupid varnish for brightwork. Should not be an issue for a rod though.
  6. You might just have saved his life mate, well done.
  7. Whoa you're doing just fine mate! Or are you building up an excuse to buy a boat lol :-)
  8. Nice report mate very well done!
  9. Subtropical species in MH... I wonder if the water has been warming or if they've always been here in small numbers? You should send the pics to a uni (the fish tagging folks?) and ask. On blades, how do you handle them on snaggy bottoms? I love them too but they're bloody expensive to lose!
  10. Hi Flickn, I wrote a fishing report about eating mackerel recently. They're staple food in much of Europe and I find the 20cm + models delicious. They have to be filleted right to remove the bones and being fishy, you'll only love the taste if you also like things like sardines and anchovies. Give them a go and tell us how you went!
  11. And let's not forget the toothbrush :-)
  12. Mad skills: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NrBjgFfeo4A
  13. Congrats on braving the weather mate, still a good result. I can't seem to be able to catch any squid around MH recently either btw!

  16. Last time I went camping with the kids we tied a good ol' bricks to a 4 mil rope to great effect :-P A little bit of slower drift can help cover ground.
  17. Thanks guys. I want to focus on bream as my next code breaking for now, but flatties and kingies will definitely be on after that!
  18. Totally agree Day's, what you see here is just me making the best of my noobie skills... Bigger stuff will come :-)
  19. Thanks fisholb - yes according to fishbase apparently yakka, cowanyoung and yellowtail horse mackerel is all different names for it (and surprisingly the species only exists in Oz and NZ!). I only discovered recently that MH has 20cm+ models! http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/speciesSummary.php?ID=1979&AT=yakka
  20. Hi everyone, I always spend at least 30 minutes on the prawn lure to great success in the past in MH, but haven't managed to find one in the last month and a half. Anyone had any luck recently there? Many thanks!
  21. Also check out my reports, I fish in Middle Harbour most of the time and have been getting good results recently.
  22. Decided to head out on Sunday night despite the risk of getting drenched and was rewarded with a blustery Middle Harbour. Magnificent. i wandered near The Spit in the tender targeting bream to try out something I thought might work: Throwing a prawn-baited hook with the tiniest sinker within inches of pylons and other structures, taking risks exactly as you would with soft plastics. It worked! Kept these 25cm and 34cm beauties and released a few more undersized models in a couple of hours. Letting the bait drift away naturally from the targeted structures extra longer also got tailor interested. I am really pleased with my progress. It took me a year to catch a decent fish there but it starts to feel like I am more in control, with 5 successful sessions out of 5. There's basic technique, but I think taking time to decipher fish behaviours and habitats is extremely rewarding. And learning not to panic and get busted On a different note, I was curious about the reactions to my last report so also went out one night last week looking for horse mackerel. I know many people don't consider it good eating here but I really wanted to try a recipe as it's pretty standard fare in many places e.g. for tapas in Spain. I ended up with 4 totalling 1.2kg, gave 2 to some Japanese friends (they call it saba and love it) and oven cooked the rest sealed in foil with sake for sweet, lemon slice stuffing for sour, and a big dollop of butter for good health! Eat with salt flakes and a cold beer. It was yummy as! A bit like sardines or unsalted anchovies. The kids had seconds. Give it a go if you catch them!
  23. Thanks Gatts will definitely try!
