  1. i've caught one on a pilly half down south earlier this year.
  2. what about the rivers???? trout season opens fellas!
  3. not as good for casting though. you want a good 30 pd worth of breaking strain and the braid is often stronger than it's rated. try casting the same distance with a 30pd mono. if you're worried about cutting on the rocks when the fish is close, use an extra long mono leader say 6 metres.
  4. what's your budget? i'd go a 10 foot medium/fast action type rod with a bit of grunt in the butt, 20-30pd braid and a biggish reel with a decent ratio. should get big distance.
  5. did the same off dy on friday. in fact, haven't scored a solid fish from dy this year! the way i see it, i'm due for some serious luck soon!
  6. this time of year you should try with a whole pilly on a gang hook in the late afternoon. should pick yourself up a tailor or three. i'm not sure how cronulla is fishing at the moment though. I'm sure a fellow raider will help you out on that point. in terms of what to look for, take your time choosing a spot. get to the beach and watch the waves from a hill for a bit. gutters close to the shore can be identified as blue bits of water between braking waves at the shore line and more braking waves a variable distance out (eg. 50m). i like to cast at the further braking waves and drag my bait back a bit until it's just inside the gutter. fish tend to bite a bit harder in the surf. i like to fish the high tide early morning or late afternoon but i don't think it's a big deal so long as you find a nice gutter and fish the morning or afternoon. if you don't get any bites and find your bait untouched for about 30 mins, move spots. fish will congregate in one spot and leave many others baron. there's not much point sticking it out in one spot for two hours if they aren't biting. good luck. and remember to post your reports whether it be a succuess or a dud. you'll learn something from the experience and probably get more raider replies if you tell us how your session went and what techniques you tried. welcome to the site.
  7. quick question fellas. how would you rate the following options in terms of importance: A. spare trailer tyre. B. transom ladder. C. dual battery setup. any help would be appreciated. thanks.
  8. How much would it cost to service a 60hp yamaha 4s efi? what intervals, etc. i don't want to say what i'm considering as an alternative in fear of another pumped up ford v holden style debate that goes round and round in circles and goes right off topic (just like this sentence). also, anyone with experience using one of these motors please post and let us know your opinion pros v cons. thanks
  9. best part of the show was listening to excuses in the new zealanders accent... two big mauri's loading up the back of a truck with buckets of some sort of clam in the middle of the night like seasoned pro fisherman: "i swiir bro, i didn't know."
  10. Tried landbased at illawong yesterday evening for zip. Not even a tailor nibble. Spoke with several other anglers there at the time with similar results. How is Fishaider bay going? Any raider reports from this weekend?
  11. $6 after 6pm. closes at 8. it was enough time for me. pretty depressing really. every year prices get worse and worse.

    Buying Private

Hoping for help again raiders. Does anyone have advice about the process of buying a used boat privately? my main concerns are, 1. checking if money is owing on the boat, 2. can i arrange insurance or do i need an inspection of some sort first? 3. any special paperwok required for transferring registration, and roughly how much that would cost. 4. do i need to draft a contract/receipt of the sale and will this be sufficient protection? 5. should i get a surveyor to check it? do people do this for small trailer boats? Any advice would be much appreciated. Are there other problems to look out for (apart from buying a lemon)? Thanks.

    How Many Hours?

I'm probably asking a basic question but here goes anyway.... How do you know how many hours a motors done? Am looking at used boats and would lilke to confirm what the seller says about number of hours. Engine is an etec (if that helps). Thanks in advance.
  15. give yourself another half hour to walk to the dam from the locked gate.

    Hairtail

tried landbased cottage point (after reading the pre-social d!@# tease report last week) on thursday night 1930-2200 for a big fat zero.
  17. TIP1: watch out for the hoons on trail bikes that try and kick up sand on your reels. TIP2: try royal red prawns and chicken breast for some big bull bream.
  18. i suggest we start a new forum titled "jewgaffer said..." your input on this forum is gold. thank you.

    Pb Squid

I'll tell you what though, arrow heads are less of a pain to clean than these things. what species is it?
  20. These images were sourced from http://www.steelheader.net/knots/float_stopper.htm hope it helps.
  21. my bet it was a massive salmon. two hits ... schooling fish.
  22. I (and others I've seen landbased fishing for hairies) use my rock/beach outfit. ie 12 foot long c@#$ and reel with a float setup. make sure you have a stopper for the float which allows decent depths 5 - 7- 9 metres. An old guy I spoke with once told me he'd use light line eg 6pd to tie onto his main line as the stopper - less likely to catch on rod guides and limit casting distance.
  23. thanks for all the suggestions guys. i have updated the list. noticed the sailfish is a us boat and some nz boats are in the list. any other international boats worth considering? nice pics James1990. Saw your other post. let us know how your test run went.
