  1. Hi Yabbie, I imported my Sea Pro late last year. PM me if you would like to chat in depth about the procedure. With a little patience it is a rather easy process if you know what to look out for in advance. Cheers Spoont
  2. I was in the middle of it.. Impressive... wasn't it. It's a shame the fishing wasn't the same. A few marlin caught but all in all a slow day. My favourite was the yellow CABO with the carolina flare.. hmmmmmm...
  3. Now boys, I already have Ross' backup and could probably throw it all back in ya face by asking the forum for support as well cause I am sure a few will have seen the same story. But I will save you the humble pie...Unless it comes with devon and tomato sauce.. Come in spinner......
  4. Lala, The only spin you can catch is the "spinning s**t", which you seem to be quite good at. Bricky, I managed a couple of reds with the old man. He had a ball drinking at the pub with Ross and the boys, I have never seen him so drunk. It was the first time I have had to take they keys to the car from him. Johnny Holmes may have had endurance in the bed but with the beers, no chance..
  5. Guys, Thanks for your friendship over the four days, I had a blast watching you all lose your virginity. On another note, I almost fulfilled my goals for 2008 in one arvo. On Sunday I had a small striped marlin take a halco giant trembler I was using to test some adjustments I made to my outriggers. After 10 min I was starting to think I would not only have the first marlin for the new boat but have done it single handed as well.... then that horrid slack was felt and it was all over. Some good images etched into my mind though.. Still, I have another three weeks up here so as long as I can put up with the caravan for a month there will hopefully be a few more chances. BTW Lala, you forgot to to mention the moment you cursed your wife for not ringing you on your birthday only to discover later that day that you had the wrong day!!!!! CHAMPION STUFF MATE...
  6. Hi Raiders, My darling sister has been pestering me for months to take the nephew off her hands for a weekend so she can have some "quality time" with the significant other. He just happens to be a non fisho so i thought I would take the nephew on his first fishin trip. I have booked a van at Port Stephens for the weekend and was wondering if anyone can give me any hints on where to target garfish either land based or from a boat. I will be taking the tinny up. Thanks for the help, I know someone will be willing to help make a little guy happy. Cheers
  7. I have a 1kw transom mount transducer for my Koden. It's mounted on a commercially available bracket so it can be removed and stowed away from light fingers. Last weekend I fished the same ground on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday I was in the dealer's boat with the same sounder but a through hull, on Sunday I was in mine and I could not notice any difference. You won't have a problem mate. Let me know if you would like the details of the bracket and I will track them down. BTW.. I get a clear bottom reading in 500 fathoms at 32 knots!! Cheers
  8. We left Como Marina at 2.00am on Friday and smacked into a solid southerly. After a full days fishing our score was all doughnuts..... So much for dedication... Saturday saw worse conditions and we pulled the hook at 10.00am and gave the slimies a workout with the dzen other boats in the lee of the storm. A tally of doughnuts again... and I am starting to put on weight from the excess consumption of the buggers. Sundy dawned with a thumpng southerly still blowing but we braved the conditions and were rewarded with a glass off at around 11.00. The renewed conditions brought the fish on and we managed a couple of small fin from a school we spotted "VERY" wide of canyons. While battling these smallish fin, we had a purple zuker smashed from the long rigger on 15, after an hour we had most of the line back on the tiagra and were greeted by what we estimated to be 70+kg of the most beautful fin you could imagine. After two days of zeros i was thinking erotic thoughts of what I would do to it when boated.... There was a call from the flybridge..... "MAKO".... We chucked fish frames at the bugger to try to keep it away from the fin, one with a hook and wire because we thought a hooked mako would not be hungry... The angler backed the drag off only to have 700+m ripped from the spool and the mako follow it to the depths. You guessed it, sharked.... Th angler thought we still had a head to show off given the weight still present. However the fuller the spool became, the more we realised there would be nothing to show. When we had all the line back, all there was to show was a cleanly cut leader. This gives some idea to the size of the make when you can lose so mush fish in one bite. Anyway, thats fishin..... A big crongrats must go out to the JBGFC and the Huski Pub and RSL for their hospitality. If anyone has thought of fishing this comp then take my advise and do so next year. The suth coast hospitality was first class and the sponsors certainly came to the party. I for one will be back. Thanks all and hopefully next year will bring better conditions. Sponot
  9. Hey Smokin, I enjoyed the chat at the Pakula dig last night. Keep your eyes on the weather today mate if you decide to head out, there is a sutherly on the way. The wind looks like its going to shift around all day. Cheers Sponot
  10. This raider is definately going as you don't have people with Peter's knowledge of game fishing lures in your vicinity too often If anyone would like a lift I will be leaving Cronulla at around 5.45. Pickups can be from Cronulla/Caringbah along Taren Point Rd, San Souci, Botany etc. Or if no one from above then Princes Hwy to Kogarah, Rockdale etc. Contact me on 0419540663. Cheers Sponot

    Tackle Hates

I have a feeling that now I have admitted to being a dork there will be others to follow. I am sure I am not Robinson Cruso on this one

Finally picking up the Tiagra that you have worked soo much overtime to afford way back when fuel was under a dollar. You take it out of the box, admire it, stroke it, you even give it bit of a caress. You maticulously pay attention to how much tension is on the line while you spool it up, you lay the line perfectly so the reel is full without a strand of line out of place. You mount the reel on you favourite 37kg custom stick, ONLY TO REALISE THAT YOU DIDNT PUT THE BLOODY BOLTS IN FOR THE ROD LOCK Decision time, do you just say stuff it and go without? Of course you don't, it has to be perfect so you wind the line off and do it all over again. About an hour later and with forearms Arnie would be proud of, she goes in the cover to be stored for what will most likely be months because you cant afford the fuel to get out to the shelf. Thats what i hate
  13. Have picked up a few at Kurnell while targetting drummer. They don't seem to be around in the numbers they once were but if you employ the usual trevally and drummer tactics in the same areas then you should get onto a couple.
  14. When I was growing up, the family used to go camping at JB for Christmas and the old man's boat would sit on a mooring for four weeks without being flushed. It was a 65hp suzuki which I sold for him four years ago at the ripe old age of 18. It will be fine as long as it is used regularly or at least turned over and run once a day. It would pay to give the telltale outlet a spray with WD40 or the like. I now provide the family boat at Christmas camping time and run a Yammy 250 HPDI. It sits on the same mooring without being flushed and I am yet to have problem. And we have all heard how tempramental the HPDI's can be. Cheers
  15. Thanks for the advise guys, I think I am going to go for the FCV585 as a standalone sounder with the 1kw transducer. Whilst most of my fishing will be on the surface, I do intend to do some bottom bouncing out wide so will need the extra grunt. I guess it's best to have that bit extra so it can be used if needed, rather than needing it and not having it. Cheers Shawn
  16. Hi Raiders, I am going to ask a question about a topic that has been covered a thousand times on this site. I have read, and re-read every single post about................................. SOUNDERS.... Before you click away, I beg you to wait just a while and hear me out. I have a boat on the way from the states which has a Garmin GPSMAP 498 onboard. This is a discontinued model and has us bluecharts loaded. My intention is to fish 12 mile, Browns, Offshore Kiama and the Banks region of JB amongst others, therefore I am going to upgrade and have decided on the ever popular Furuno FCV585. I want seperate chart and sounder units and plan to buy a Garmin Bluechart Pacifc map and use the Garmin as my GPS and the Furuno as my sounder. My question is, can anyone see anything wrong with this scenario and given my planned target areas, do you suggest the 1kw transducer or will the 600w do the job? I was thinking of going for the 1kw transom mount purely for ease of installation. Is there any great benefit in having the through hull tranny? And the showstopper is.... Would the Garmin do the job without spending the additional hard earned on the Furuno?? The $2.5k would be well spent elsewhere if that was the case. I appreciate your ponderings raiders and look forward to you advise. Cheers Shawn
  17. Well, I still have four weeks to wait until the new boat arrives so I will be staring out the window looking longingly towards the horizon and praying that the warm water pushes a little further south and hangs around until i get her in the water. Oh... Of course there is Bathurst, so Sunday is couch day. Have a good weekend all. And if anyone needs a decky or a crew member with own gear, license, fuel etc. You know where to come...
  18. It's for the Infamous Desalination Plant. Ominous signs for us all i am afraid
  19. Check here: http://fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=34252 Believe me, they look the goods in the flesh.
  20. Hi Raiders, I broke up with my missus a month or so ago and went and did what any fisherman would do. INTERNET THERAPY FOR ANGLERS. In other words, looking for the NEXT SURE THING... Well it turned up today. What a beauty...... (said with my best croc hunter impersonation) I can't wait to give them a workout but alas, the reddies will have to wait, my boat doesn't arrive for another six weeks. I wonder if the blackies would take them??
  21. Cheers Boys, You are taking the pain out of the decision making process. I'm not a game fishing virgin, having cut my teeth on Marlin and Tuna in PNG but up their you could tow a condom and catch fish. Seems their is a lot more finesse involved down here. By the way.. If anyone needs an experienced decky to fill a spot in the next few weeks, let me know. As long as you don't mind a thousand questions coming your way. Got to learn somehow.
  22. Here is a challenge which should keep all you tackle rats (and those who want to give their two cents worth) busy for the remainder of this Wintery spring weekend. The new boat is on its way, I have all the hardware covered (Rods, Reels, Outriggers, Downrigger, Gimbals, Harness etc. etc.) and am now focussing on stocking up on lures, leaders, terminals etc. The challenge is:- With a budget of $1500.00, what would be on your “must have” shopping list if you were to be given the task of stocking a boat from scratch for in and off shore game fishing (8,10,15,25 kg). I want to focus on livebaiting but will need to cover those days where the fish are not cooperative? We have all been in the situation where you rock up to your favourite tackle shop, thinking you know what you require, only to walk out either with way more than you will ever reasonably use (check out the classified section) or having forgot a few of the more essential items. I don’t want to go overboard but am mindful that I will need a decent assortment of lures (pushers, jet heads, divers, bibbed, bibles etc), leaders, terminals (crimps, sleeves, snaps, hooks etc). I am looking forward to the various ideas everyone has on what is considered to be a “must have” item, and expect there will be considerable debate and most likely some conjecture. Oh, most of my fishing will be done offshore of Sydney and the South Coast (JB) Thanks in advance for your suggestions. PS… Anyone know where I can buy some cheap shares in an oil company 
  23. Mate, I would definately opt to have it heard in court. I was done DUI (.065) over Christmas which is an automatic six month suspension. Since I am a courier driver I opted to represent myself in court and had the sentence adjusted to a 12 month good behaviour bond. There is no cost to represent yourself and you might just get off all together. Its not hard, you just give the judge your version and if he/she is in a good mood and takes pity on your situation, away you go. At least that's how I hope it works for ya. If you drink and drive your a bloody idiot. Cheers Sponot
