  1. Hi Guys, Only just seen this forum (generally only read the reports). I caught this guy off the island at Balmoral beach in 2010 and have always wondered what is is. I released it after plenty of people had taken photos. Thanks
  2. Number 2 last night. How strong are they!!
  3. Cool. I have caught a lot of bream (some big ones) on bread and plenty of mullet. I guess its a good alternative if there isn't much weed around.
  4. thanks guys. Ryder - got the leather jacket on bread and i used bread for berley Can you get blackfish on bread? I have got busted off a couple of times by unknowns while catching mullet on bread.
  5. hawkesbass, i was at Cremorne just off the rocks along the shore
  6. After reading so many posts about blackfish i thought i'd better get involved in this type of fishing. I read up on all the tips etc and went for my first attempt after work. I managed to find enough weed for about 1 hours worth of fishing. Wasn't overly confident in what i was doing but managed this guy after about 45 minutes. I was stoked. I was trying to cast as far as possible which i now realise might be futile as i found it hard to get more than about 5m (i think my float is too light?), secondly i caught the fish almost under my feet. I really enjoyed it and like everyone else am keen to really get into it. Any simple tips for a beginner would be appreciated. I assume that weed is worth more than gold?
  7. I saw a guy get two of these a couple of years ago off balmoral wharf on live yakkas.
  8. thanks guys, i think oztyke is being conservative with his 45cm. It really was an absolute monster and i explained it might be a while before he beats that. Thought it was a decent salmon when first hooked. Beginners luck. stitches due out tomorrow (17 days after initially saying 7). Dying to get back there before summer buggers off.
  9. spot on Ryder. The website is reputable but hadn't updated their listings so we tried to get two combos that were discontinued. Anyway all good now and should have the new stuff in a few days. Looking forward to it. Oztyke is mad for fishing now after just a few months........wonder if its because we always manage to squeeze a few beers into the backpack.
  10. cheers stalker, pretty nasty cut but get the stitches out tomorrow, fishing again by next week. It seems a bit hit and miss there. We have had a couple of sessions for no catch. Always hopeful - we just had pretty light spinning gear. 6"6 rods, 2500 reels with about 12lb line. We are keen to get these 10ft +rods but have been let down by one website we ordered from. Now its time to haggle....
  11. ok, something heavier that 6kg line required me thinks
  12. thanks guys pbk - it is "a" harbour beach inbetween spit and manly Mark - do you mean shovel nose sharks or actual bitey sharks. It really is a cool spot, We hooked into a couple of other fish got off. We didn't have any heavy gear and were only casting 20m past the breaker
  13. Hi Guys, Went for a fish with a mate (pretty new to fishing) on Sunday evening at a harbour beach that we haven't been to before. Started on the rocks at one end and my friend got a decent bream. Not much else so decided to have a go off the beach. I havent done much beach fishing at all in the harbour but will definitely be doing some more. Managed to get a shovel nose, my mate got a good salmon and we got an flathead too all in the space of about an hour. Great spot and awesome evening. Just as we left a seal swam along close in so we timed it pretty well.
  14. Hi Guys, Have any of you sydney harbour land based fishos had and any decent catches recently? I have been out a few times in the last couple of weeks with no real success. I thought at this time of the year things would really be heating up. Would be interested to know of any good spots around the harbour that are producing some good fish. My main flathead spot has only produced one small fish after three attempts thus far. I managed this snapper on Wednesday which may have been legal but it went back in. Anyway, got to keep trying.........the goal is still that kingfish this summer.
  15. Hey Krause I always keep my eye open at big W as they sometimes have some really good deals. In fact yesterday i bought a new combo for $98. Shimano Forcemaster 3-5kg 6.6 coupled with a shimano Alivio 2500 reel. I reckon thats pretty good value, cant wait to try it. Good luck, always pretty cool getting new gear, i can only equate it to chicks buying shoes.
  16. I've caught a few of them in the harbour close to rocks. Cool looking little fish but the one you have is about full size.
  17. definitely. However I have found the best bait around there is chicknen thigh.
  18. If you enter Cremorne point at the start of the walkway (south side) you can get down onto the sand flats for flathead and salmon on plastics. A bit further along you can drop down anywhere and fish off the rocks all the way to the swimming pool. You can walk right round to the lighthouse and climb down the ladder there but i've never had much luck there. Keep going around and there are a couple of tracks down to rocks on the north side where its quite deep and calm (best results there) I have caught pretty much everything down there (even a 1.7kg snapper). Most common are bream (big), juvenile snapper, some good trevally and flathead (i have even caught flounder, blue swimmer crabs, eels etc etc) I hope this helps a bit.
  19. Hi Flattie, The wharf is about half way along the north side of the point. I fish Cremorne point all the time (on of my favourite harbour spots) but rarely the wharf due to the frequency of ferries. There are a lot of other spots to fish around the entire point off the rocks or on the sand flats. You'd be surprised at the quality of the fishing around this area. Good luck.
  20. thanks guys, great fun. I got one a couple of weeks before at 47cm but i could have sworn this was as big if not bigger. I'll go with 45-50
  21. Got another really good size trevally on Sunday. Went for a very quick and casual fish at the picnic area at Echo point. Pretty much nothing going on until this one screamed off with my piece of pilchad. Took a good while to get him in with a few heart in the mouth moments having to negotiate chairs (both in the water and out), people, logs and not spill my beer. I would guess it was 50cm + pretty happy with that in front of an audience. He had swallowed the hook way down deep but swam off with no problems. They are fast becoming my favourite fish.
  22. good stuff yungfisher, cheap set up but it does the job really well. That trevally was 47cm so really tested it (especially in a rocky area). Its first run i just held the rod in two hands while it peeled off accross the harbour. Thought it was a ray.
  23. Went out on Saturday for a good few hours. Managed a good flounder and this guy just as i was packing up. Cant believe i landed it as it took me into several rocks. Everything was at breaking point and my line was frayed to pieces when i got it in. How strong are they.......
  24. Hi Jezza, Just what the other guys have said. Sounds like you are doing most things right. As soon as summer arrives you'll get into some decent fish. I fish around Cremorne and neutral bay quite a lot and it is dead at the moment. I went yesterday to clifton gardens (around the rocks) and just got tiny snapper. The conditions and water were awesome but it really is hard at this time of year. Hang in there.
