  1. Hi all, been out last Friday and today for two pretty awesome sessions. I think I can confirm I've found a spot for consistently big flathead. Released this bigun this morning before near freezing to death on the kayak when the rain and wind hit. Had a couple of live yakkas chomped by tailor and a pinkie on the way up. In one photo you can see a yellow tail of a yakka. Must have been 30cm.
  2. Like others I've had a few really memorable fish. I got this guy off the island at balmoral beach which I thought was pretty cool/rare for Sydney harbour. Also caught a 47 cm snapper at cremorne point.
  3. Hi whiskey, I'm by no means any sort of expert. I spend a good deal of time untangling my rods or removing hooks from various parts of the yak and my body... I now take 3 rods. One with a sabiki specifically for livies, one set up with a lure/plastic for any bust ups and a bigger guy to target kings etc with the livies. The lure set up doubles up for bottom bashing for anything while I have (or don't have) a livey out. I also go from tunks ( to my favourite spot) or launch from the spit by the rowing club. Clontarf also. Have got two kings so far and a couple of very large flatties. Every time I go there will be some interesting incident...a school of kings under the yak, catching an octopus...a bit of topless beach action Kayak fishing in the harbour is awesome
  4. Hi Krause, Had my kayak for a couple of years and mainly hang around middle harbour. Still learning every time but have had a few decent fish in it.
  5. Thanks for all the feedback guys. These pilchards basically died within a few seconds of hitting the kayak. The king may have even snaffled it dead? Thanks pickles I'll have a look. There were scales everywhere. I'm struggling to get the good intermediate species like legal bream and trevally etc. I seem to go between baby snapper and king/bust off. Probably need a solid plan before heading out.
  6. Hi all, managed to get out in the kayak yesterday before it got too hot. Not much happening until schools of pilchards turned up under the kayak. They went nuts for the sabiki. Brilliant I thought, I'll throw one out live but they seemed to die within seconds or when putting a hook in. Can anyone assist with using live pilchards? But one must have had one last breath of life and I managed to net my second ever harbour king....quite addictive isn't it Sorry about the quality, my hands were shaking
  7. Jenno- of course at the time I took a mental note of tide etc but can't remember exactly now. Was run out and the current increased quite rapidly to a point where it got too strong to hold bottom Frank and fish- simple running sinker rig on 15 lb mono. I have two rods in the kayak. Anymore and I'm a clumsy mess. Yeah around clontarf/ balmoral
  8. Thanks guys. Interesting Ron. I didn't know that and would explain the session. The photo doesn't really do it justice, it was a beast. Just a single hook with pilly head. Luckily hooked right through top lip and managed to avoid any abrasion. The difference in fight between this and a say 60cm version was a massive contrast
  9. Hi all, first kayak session after winter and was a success. Fished in middle harbour with pilchards and got this girl. Took a.long time to get it in the kayak and when I did I nearly jumped out. Must have gone close to 90cm and safely released. Crazy thing is I reckon I lost a couple more about that size. Have I found the spot......
  10. thanks guys, its a nice little spot to fish. Can get all sorts .
  11. Hi, Hardly got out in the kayak over summer which is a bit disappointing so i thought i'd better get some last minute fishing done before winter kicks in (really struggle to get anything in the harbour land based in winter). Got to cremorne point and was fishing by 3:45pm. Got a couple of good bream (biggest 35cm). All released. Will try and squeeze in a couple more sessions soon. The times i made it out in the kayak in middle harbour over summer i targeted kings with a few hook ups and many bust offs. Played one on a sabiki until the inevitable. I've found a great spot but there's almost too much structure.
  12. thanks guys, appreciate your expertise. Its the first one ive seen in Sydney harbour.
  13. Hi Guys, What is this little fella?
  14. Great report Krispy, looking forward to this summer season
  15. I have one very similar 2.7m and 20kg. perfect for calm water. I go in sydney harbour (middle harbour)
  16. thanks Yowie, i'll definitely give that a go not only as its come from the guru but they were actively on the surface taking bread blaxland- no i dont think its anywhere near the wreck....assuming that is close to the ramp on the left hand side? I paddle quite a way from the ramp past figtree point. Its good exercise and clears and Friday night shenanigans from the system
  17. cheers undy, nothing that sophisticated on my kayak unfortunately....yet. I've found a spot where i've seen them each time i've been there just by berleying or literally swimming under my kayak (never busting up). Almost seems as though they are resident there. Its a nice calm deep spot. they all seem about in that 60-70cm range but i guess there are bigger ones lurking.
  18. cheers guys, yeah i took the beads off (got the king with them on but down on the bottom) and tried to disguise the hook but no good. You're right Frag, i needed some fluro carbon and probably lighter too
  19. Hi, Went out in the Kayak from Tunks Park on Saturday morning, quite a long paddle to my spot but well worth it. First pilchard tail down and massive strike, i knew it was decent and after about 10 minutes i had my first kingfish flapping around in the kayak. A couple of photos and back he went. I berleyed hard with bread and had about 5 kings under my kayak, they were even eating crusts off the surface, i threw a few pilchard cubes in and they got nailed straight away. As soon as i stuck a hook in one they wouldnt go near it. However this bonito(i think) came charging in from nowhere and gulped down my hooked piece. As i was trying to get him in the kings were having a real go at it. After that came a trevally on the sabiki (amazing what you get on those). Got a lot of smaller stuff also. I ended up using my last pilchards to feed the kingfish and took a video. Annoyingly this time i couldn't get and livies to try. Next time i'll give it a go with a jig perhaps. Anyway what a crazy brilliant little session, made the paddle back a bit easier. cheers Neil
  20. Awesome catch. What do you think kept biting the livies and missing the hook. This happened to me in the weekend with yakkas. Tailor?
  21. went out on Saturday for my maiden voyage. Made it from Tunks park to northbridge baths which was a good paddle. Had a lure out the back but nothing interested. tied to a mooring at Northbridge baths and looked down into the water and there were some massive brean directly under me a couple of meters down. Didnt get anything there and had a few casts around the boats too. Despite no fish it was good to get everything sussed and learn quickly where to store things and what to take/leave behind for next time
  22. thanks guys. Delivery on Friday so i'll post back after the first outing. Looking forward to it
