  1. I got into black fishing over winter. Buy small little floats. You can pick them up from bcf for a dollar a piece and they take up no room at all. I found that random rock selves don't produce that many fish. Best to find a reliable self near you. Talk to locals and what not. Use light leader, little hooks, and change the depth often till you find the fish. Hopefully you crack the code and have some fun

  2. There is something magic about watching your float drifting down a run and seeing it draw slowly under, waiting for a count of 6 or more and then "You are on!

In my book it is hard to beat the combination of the visual and physical experience of float fishing.

Used to fish for Taylor using bobby corks and ganged garfish of Doughboy rock at Kurnell. The sight of a big Taylor smashing the bobby down with a mighty splash still brings goose bumps to my skin.

Even float fishing for Garfish has a lot of appeal for me.

Agreed. I think that youve got it spot on. Where abouts at kurnel?

  3. Hey Krause,

As we know the birds are exhausted and basically die for this reason. The vet said that the re-hydrate the birds and release them after 24hrs. It was interesting to find out that they can not take flight from land. So if you do try rescuing, what you did was fine. Find a shallow non flowing water area and that will give them their best chance to rest and survive. There must be millions of them as there attrition rate is shocking!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

Cool, good to know that i was somewhere close to correct in my actions. And I agree with your statement about numbers, because their are carcases all over beaches from nelson bay to gerringong which is close to 300-350km of coast line. Poor things, came all the way from another continent to kick the bucket so close to their goal......

  4. Stanwell is amorphous at the moment. On tuesday there was an excellent rip/gutter that fished really well, yet when i returned yesterday the swim flags were set up where the gutter used to be and the beach was lacking structure. I fished the middle gutter (want great) and out fished the fellas at the north and south gutters. Yet when I say out fished I mean one salmon and some small tailor verses their one salmon. Tell us how you go.

    Cheers

  5. No real idea. What does the vet do with them. Because wires says not to interact with them. I pull them from the surf non the less because they just get smashed. Histerically I put the first one in the sand behind me, only to have it run past an hour later and continue to drown in the break.... hence I now move them near areas with less severe shore dump and they get back out.

  6. The mutton birds are miagrating the the moment. Ive been told they come from south africa/america (I cant quite remember which, but its a long way for a small bird to fly) and they travel to tasmania to breed. My family tried to save a dieing one and rang wires (where this info came from) and they sadi that they just drop from exaustion. hence the beaches are covered in them. Ive been fishing the south beaches this week and have picked up about a dozen birds that were stuggling in the break. Just put them down the beach were there is less sevre break so they can swim back out.

As for the eagles, they are waesome. Not long ago i stayed at port stephens. After a hot tailor session we filleted about a dozen fish, and discarded the carcases out the back of the house, and through them in the shallow sand flats at corrlete. Then proceded to watch a breeding pair of white creasted sea eagles, swoop down and take all the carcases, carry three or more at the same time, picking one up per fly by. Awesome animals, and you dont get an idea of their size untill they are near something for a scale of reference. Awesome stuff.

What a shame, a once in a lifetime shot and no camera.

But you have a great memory of a unique moment in nature. Don't you just love the things that fishos get to see, proof that it ain't just about fishing.

    Cheers

    Very true indeed, Cheers

  7. If ur targetting the bread and butter species in the surf, i wouldnt be using star sinkers and anchoring your baig in one spot of the gutter, or elsewhere. Use long leader, size 2-4 baitholder and a running ball sinker (size depending on swell, and obviously if swell is too rough it becomes much harder) and a fresh prawn for bait, this will get bream,, if u want whiting use worm hook, abd beach worms, tube worm etc... and same set up. Let your rig move around, not just in the gutter. Cast out into the gutter and let your rig move wherever it wants to go, and manage your line. If it comes back to the bank, reel back in and cast it out again.

Keep moving around and cover ground. Holding to one spot for bread and butter species will just limit your time in the 'zone'

When beach fishing i always look for gutters and holes and target them first, if i cant get what im targetting for i always move.

When starting beach fishing i used to whack on a big star sinker and patternoster gang pilly, and aim it into the gutters, at times ill get the fish, but i used to spend hours with bait in the gutter only to hook onto nothing.

Move around, youll find fish better.

Intersting take, ill give it a go. That final statment about pillies and waiting is a pretty realistic view. Might just take one rod and some bait and go for a walk, see what happen.

    Cheers

  8. Yep, I got done because the car was the only thing for miles and an easy target. I am now the most cautious and sus person ever and wont park anywhere suspicious. But there, sadly, are spot this is more common and less random, either because of the location, or the local population. Either way, like I said, if people know spots where its notorious, give others a heads up! Doesnt hurt to share that sort of info

. And scratchie, got to agree, you could leave your car unlocked at in parts of port stephens and people will come tell you that you left the car open! Nice place, nice people.

    Cheers boys

  9. Hey man. The float is a good way to go. like you have said, stopper float sinker swivel leader ganged pillie. Its a reliable setup that produces. It might also pay off to take a crome spin lure with.

BUT WATCH THE WAVES. Hill 60 is a known death trap and cation should be taken. Best not to fish in any southerly swell. If you are in doubt fish the north side rather than the south, its still good fishing round there.

    Good luck and cheers

  10. Hi guys,

I know this thread is more for boat theft and such, but I was wondering about general theft from cars whilst fishing. Is it possible to compile stories (if there are any others), and see if any good comes from it. My mates car was broken into at SNAPPER POINT at munnmora conservation state park. After research I found this was common in the area, apparently there was even an arsen attack!!! Then the other day I was at bass point (down south) and talking to some locals there. Car break ins are netorious down there! So does any one have details on these spots, or others, about the perpatrators or get away cars??? Im sure there are more people out there with knowledge and experiences. At least list know hot spots as a warning to fellow raiders. Hopefully we can stop the little buggers!!!

    Cheers boys

  11. Hey man.

I bought a shimano areowave 13ft 3pc rod (9-16kg). I own just the rod, so cannot comment on any reel involved, however I love the rod. It has been my go to for the beach and the rocks when im looking for casting distance. Mine is a stiffer verion than that youre looking at, but thats just my personal preferance. I do however find it to be a little heavy. It is counter balanced at the but to make it easy to use, and has made the design i lttle heavy, nothing that one cant come a custom to. TThe beat part is that it is >10ft yet the 3pc set up allows it to fit in the boot of the car.

Overall, its a good rod and i would recommend it!

    Cheers

  12. Hi all,

Over the last few months ive taken to beach fishing and I strongly beleive I can identify a gutter, channel, hole and all the structure one should look for. Yesterday I was at werri beach and it had an excellent gutter. It followed close to the shore and then ran out to sea. The top water was retreating quickly toward the ocean. But when I cast into it, i was washed into and allong the beach. Obviously the bottom water strata was going the opposite way. Which made things annoying. So I followed the gutter, trying to find an exit point, but there was none. It eventually just disipated into a sand bank. Thoughts?

I think the fish were a little further out in the gutter as thats were I caught the two salmon of the day, and lost baits. But I couldnt keep it there, even with a bung load of lead on the end. So i guess does anyone know what i can do to help keep it out there, or how to find the missing exit point (all that water has to go somewhere right?)?

Also I tend to use ganged pillies. Would small squid or something; a) have less resistant and stay in one spot?

    B) be a good bait for bream and whiting?

I think prawns are to soft to be lumping out into the surf, i loose them on the casts. So does anyone have advice for bait for more bread and butter speices, or even tailor(havent caught a single tailor of the beach yet)?

    Cheers

Also Werri beach in Gerringong is fishing quite well for salmon atm! Just thought id be usefull and report that :D

  13. Hey all, quick question. Im down south the sarvo and am considering throughing a line out of some stones. Theres a reasonable northernly wind and a 1.4ish NE swell or there abouts. Im considering either kiama, bass point or hill 60. Thoughts given the conditions? Im not local and dont have a huge number of hours on any of theses platforms. Mabey kiama or H.60 would be better in the wind? Idunno

    Cheers

  14. I'm all for the new changes. These fish are way to good to kill for the sake of it.

Got to agree. Its funny how we regard some fish like this and not others. For exampla any one that kills a metre worth of flattie would be slaughtered by the fishing comunity these days, where as a 25lb snapper is a good feed. We need to impose (be it leagal or moral) Upper size limits to ensure the big breeders are left out there to do there thing.

  15. Hey boss, Ive asked the same question allong with about 5 other raiders in the past months, and we have all been told to explore, get off our asses and work it out our selves. No one wants to give up their spot. At the start i thought that mabye, no offence to the fellow raiders (still love ya all!), that it was a bit tight. So I dawdled of into the darkness and went hunting for spots. I caught enough shit fish (rays mostly) to sink the titanic, however, I have recently found a stretch of water that has produced good schoolies both trips. None have been anywhere near keepable with the new bag limits (70cm), but its fun as hell to catch them on light gear, and very rewarding after all the hours ive spent sitting on the side of a river.

So now I really do have to AGREE with those fellow raiders who told me to man up and put in some hard work. I wouldnt want to give away my new found spot because of the time i spent bush bashing through what is private land to find it! So hence I say go forth and venture. It will suck at first, I promise you that, but persist, the jews are bloody good fun. All I will say is what not to do. Stay away from the largely recomended spots, they didnt work at all for me, and chase deeper pockets around headlands and such, thats my thought anyways. I might have it wrong, but that is what has worked for me over the past few months. I hope to hook into a real nice jewie soon!!!!

    Cheers

  16. My two bobs worth? Blackfish burley without weed aint blackfish burley. I always use finely chopped weed and a little bread to fill it out. I would think that the weed is the more crutial component, seeing that is the only actual bait they consistantly strike at. I dont know if they would resond to burley pellets or tuna oil. Give it a shot, all you can do is try.

    Cheers

  17. Na forget the bottle for mullet just bream and small hooks no float just get them worked uo with bread fling your bread out when it sinks so that you can see it reel in do it again the trick is just put enuff bread on the hook just to cover the point of the hook smaller the better

Sent from my GT-S7500T using Tapatalk 2

Awesome, cheers for that tip. Having never tried it before im sure itll be fun! Mabey a little swearing and missed strikes at first!
