Hi All,
I was recently browsing FR forum and found an interesting bluefin's post about puffer lure record. Funny enough, puffer was my first catch in NSW waters back in summer 2012. The photo is below. The fish was caught on piece of chicken on a running sinker with a large circle hook from Balmoral wharf at night. I was not sure it was a fish till the last moment until I pulled it to the light. It took some time to get my hook back and to release the fish as the fish had strong jaws and a lot of spikes. I had nothing to measure the catch at that time, however for comparison - my shoes are 13 US size (31cm).

Mate, tell us what fish and how are you going to chase with it for some suggestions. Fibreglass may not be the best options for lures.
I would suggest to visit closest BCF or other large tackle store in your area and try your reel with different baitcaster rods to feel how it is balanced and comfortable to cast.

After having all the tails bitten off our plastics by jackets and toadfish we found the loly snakes worked well as a backup on snapper and kings, we did trim the tails to make them flutter down a little better.
Did you try licorice stripes for this purpose? Many of them include aniseed oil which is well-known attractant.

I mainly fish with lures. But recently I have been seen putting the odd worm or yabby on the jig head instead of the usual SP. It is VERY effective.
I do the similar thing on the days when fish refuses Hard Bodies and Soft Plastic or when I fish close to the rock bottom with high chance of loosing lures. The difference - I use leader with running sinker straight to the hook instead of jig heads. This allows to reduce the costs of the lost tackle and quickly change weight (sinker) to suit depth, current, required casting distance.

Left hand overhead reels are quite popular overseas. They do exist in Australia as well, though not many. Just google " left hand jigging reel au " if you are still interested in them, and check the what suit your budget and drag requirement.

I am still struggling to break my $12.50 Jarvis Walker 2500 reel in light estuary/rock fishing (mostly breams, flatheads, whitings and pigs) for the 4th year, so I can buy something decent.

Hi All,
I just noticed that the channel from Narrabeen lake to the ocean was closed intentionally this time and some construction has started. Does anybody know why and when that has happened?

I was there several times after local hiking and saw a guy once who was pretty confident what he was doing there - he used small soft plastic lures with different scents. I did not catch anything there however I had to swim once to get some expensive lure back.

Mine has a 100 lt underfloor fuel tank, the little yam f70 gives me around 3 km per litre, the most I can burn is 2.5 km per litre running almost flat out. I run a small pitch prop

250-300km range sounds very promising without breaking the bank.
Is the boat's material (rubber?) much impacted by sun/UV or heat in summer?
How long is expected life for the boat?
I presume it is rather light for towing. Would Forester handle it?
How often do you (have to) deflate/inflate it?

Just a bit of food for thought, theres no glass or alloy boat that will come close in handling or safety features for the same size.

Is this inflatable thing enough hook and gaff-proof or you should be very careful when landing the fish and casting?
I presume it is 70hp? 35l for 120 km and 75l fuel tank looks very good.
How far offshore can you get safely in average conditions?

I stopped used Gulp worms as with every cast near the structure they became another 1cm shorter.

First cast landed an impossibly small whiting with the third cast bringing in this beautifully light coloured flatty.

Need to replace my PFD's and they cost a small fortune here. Where's the best place to get them, in store or online? Big Neil.
Hi Neil. Check your local Aldi this weekend for groceries. They should also have adult inflatable PFDs (level 150 / australian certified) for $60 on special. This is the best price I saw for inflatables. Though, there are plenty of them online delivered for $69. The usual PFDs can be way cheaper. PM me if you need more details.

I think it might be " No Fisheries Officer here" sign . People are taking everything that can swim here and clean here on the spot at least in the evening/ at night and everyone is relaxed. I believe the locals wanted to close this area for fishing a while ago.

Your line is ok . What is the problem that you have at depth? If you think that you cannot reach the bottom then may be the current drags the light lure, so no slack line. In that case - try heavier jig heads as suggested by Big Neil or try metal blade lures which sink faster and are very "delicious" for flatheads.

Do you use mono line or braid? The contact with light lures is better using braid than stretchable and floating mono line.

Salted prawns as bait?

Hi All,
Just wondering if someone has experience using salted prawns (same way as pilchard can be salted) as a bait.
I purchased 1 1/2 kg raw prawns at low price from fishmarket and put them in a freezer a while ago. However struggling to catch anything on them once they are defrosted.
My wife is claiming the part of the freezer if I do not do anything about the prawns.
