Hi guys
I just caught this big eel last night at Narara Creek when put for a session with my pen rod.
What type of eel is this and is it edible?
From looking on the net I thought it might be a short-finned but not too sure...
Thanks

Wow fantastic job man!

Cheers guys. Hopefully the last boxes will get up there tomorrow. Then I'll be taking a little break and wet the line.
-
It's been quite a while since last time I posted something to the forum. Hope everyone had enjoyed their fishing recently.
I've been quite busy house hunting and only managed to wet the line three times catching breams and tailors from the beach.
After a lot of failure in finding something affordable in the Northern Beaches areas we've decided to look further up and ended up buying our first home in near Gosford. Bigger houses for less than the price of a single bedroom unit around Sydney. And the fishing quality is the icing on the cake!
Brisbane Water and Narara Creek will be probably become my next favourite fishing spots both landbased and from the yak!
But I need to settle down first, lot of work to do.
See you all soon with some catches hopefully.

Roberta, have you tried the technique where you use a stocking to hold the bait in one hand then the thumb and forefinger of the other hand trap the worm's neck against the bait. That makes a 3 points contact putting enough pressure against the worm it cannot escape. You then pull it out by lifting both hands.
-
Good idea. I'm now well trained and catch my worms bare hand. One less tool to worry about

Depending on the car, the key reprogramming can be done by yourself. I did it for my Lexus IS200 replacement key. You then need a locksmith with laser cutting machine to cut your new key. Last time I brought it to a regular locksmith he cut through the key so I had to buy another one from ebay.

I don't find it very accurate... To help the app the fish needs to be straight wit fins erected and picture need to be good. Never hot an ID of a flathead. As said earlier you still have access to list of fish with pic and info so not totally useless but not worth the price.
More tests needed

I contacted MotionX GPS and here is their answer:
"Thank you for contacting the MotionX team. At this time our NOAA experimental charts cover the Pacific, Atlantic, Gulf, and Alaskan coasts as well as the Great Lakes. Our NOAA map data does provide depths in fathoms. 1 fathom = 6 feet or 1.83 meters. Please zoom your map to zoom level 14 or closer to view depth. If you are still missing depth please let us know the area you are viewing and we would be happy to investigate further."
So I've been looking for some other marine data and found out that Open Sea Map can be used with MotionX GPS' custom map type (in-app purchase required). The only issue is that Open Sea Map's tiles are actually just transparent overlays that are meant to be used in conjunction with another map tiles such as Open Street Map. So I created my own tile server that combines Open Sea Map and Open Street Map.
Not sure if I'm allowed to post the my tile URL here so if you want to use it with Motion X GPS or another app, PM me and I'll give it to you.

The NOAA marine maps in MotionX GPS is not available for OZ, isn't it?

Hmm so far i tested with pictures on my computer: bream, flathead, whiting, mullet and kingfish. It would only recognise the bream and the mullet. It does show a list of other fish and their picture and info. Will try again will real fish.

Do they have 2lb and 4lb lines?
-
I just bought it. Will let you know if it's worth it.

Just saw an ad on Facebook for Fish Assist, an app that uses the iphone camera to identify and measure a fish.
Have anyone tried it yet?

Wow what a trio!

Are you talking about lines like Berkley Nanofil? I'm using their 4lb and 2lb line and like them. The knots are good if you make sure to make them properly, so take time and lubricate before tightening down. I'm using Uni for the nanofil to a hook or a lure and an enhanced Albright knot for nanofil to mono/fluoro leader or backing.
They are less abrasive resistant than other braid that's why lubrication while tying knots is critical. If you fish near rocks or oyster bed then use some length of leader!

Thanks Roberta. That bream of mine was caught on a cast between two of the pylons that was supporting a (how do you call that?) shed (??) above the water. They were covered with oysters. Splash and then on the second flick "kiss" then "kiss" again then "fish on!".
Sureangler, yeah it's not easy. I had loads of follows but to get them strike is another story let alone getting a hook up. Just managed one bream in three outtings... I need to understand the correct tide, lure (size, colors etc...), spots... Practice practice...

Braid or mono is to your liking. On my spinning setup I use 10lb braid and heavier leader, on my Alvey I use 15lb mono (small diameter) with heavier leader.
I don't mind my line being carried around, I can use a spider sinker if I want my bait in place. A braid line allows further cast and feel the fish better. But braid is not great with Alvey but the Alvey is already good for long cast anyway.
