  1. Thanks boys. I'll get about sorting it out this weekend, and let everyone know how it goes. Thanks Geoff
  2. Thanks for that. One more question though, if I put it 3 inches to the right of where it is now isn't the angle bad for it? I thought I should be looking for as flat an area as possible so that it gets a clean face of water going across the bottom of the transducer? I hope that makes sense Thanks Geoff
  3. Thanks for the replies boys. NaCIH2OK9, mate when you say put some chopping board on the transom, what exactly do you mean mate? I have attached 2 more pics of the whole back of the boat, if someone can please draw on one of them to point out where the best place might be to re-locate it to. Thanks Geoff
  4. Hi all, I have recently installed a new Lowrance Elite 7 with Chirp, and I'm having a few issues with it. The main issues are, a lot of lines/interference looking with just heaps of lines or patches of the screen is missing. Another is at speed and even when not going that fast I get a depth reading of 0.0 flashing on the screen. I have attached a few pics of where I mounted the transducer, if anyone with experience can maybe judge from the pics if my location isn't a good spot. I do notice when I am up and going that there seems to be a big spray coming out the back of the boat from the area where my transducer is, but because of the shape of my transom I cannot really stick my head over the side to clarify if it is. Any suggestions or advice much appreciated. Thanks Geoff

    hit sand

Hi all, Out on my boat and I'm in trouble. I hit sand and tried to get out of it but once I could see I wasn't going to budge I turned the motor off and jumped out and pushed the boat into deeper water. I stated the outboard again and now I have no water spout out of the outboard. Is it possible I've blocked my water pump with sand?? If so is there anything I can do to get the water coming out again? Thanks Geoff
  7. Look forward to it mate. That is sad mate, and like you say the conditions were good so makes you wonder what went wrong. I found a link on the accident. http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/man-killed-after-wave-flips-boat-off-port-stephens-20150628-gi076b.html
  8. Thanks everyone, yeah it was a top day in good company. Thanks heaps again Scratchie, never mind the cleaning mate I knew you had commitments and really appreciated your time and the gear you brought to make a great outing for us. Was great to meet you mate, a gentleman and a scholar! Can't wait till we can do it again. Thanks Geoff
  9. Hi Raiders, Just a big shout out to Scratchie for coming along with the young bloke and I yesterday to give us some tips and tricks on fishing and also boating. Although it wasn't as productive early as Jeff had hopped we had a great day out in the water on a cracking day in beautiful Port Stehpens. We saw so many whales both close by and in the distance which was an awesome sight, and a first for the young bloke and I. We started trolling around one of the islands with not much luck as there was no sight of any bait fish showing up on the sounder, but we went around a few times and the scene was absolutely beautiful the water was so crystal clear we could see the bottom in 20 meters of water, the view was exceptional! Next we moved onto one of Scratchies spots which was being occupied by another boat so we anchored up not too far away and didn't take long to start catching fish. We caught a mixed bag of small and just undersized fish, and also lost a few big ones. I had a monster that clean snapped me off on 50lb braid!! We finished off trolling and caught a heap of Bonito. It was the first time we had ever caught this great fighting fish and they were thick and plentiful, we didn't have to move too far before we'd hook up again and again. I caught one which Scratchie said was as big a Bonito he had seen (should have had my pic taken with it but didn't), it put up a great fight and was really fun to catch. Jeff set the young bloke up a rig on some light gear and he said the Bonito on that rod felt like the biggest fish he had ever caught, he was extremely happy talking about it on the trip home Anyhow myself and the young fella had a great afternoon out on the water learning some new techniques and catching some species we hadn't before along with some awesome Whale watching. Thanks for the afternoon Jeff was awesome and would love to do it again with you when you are free. Cheers Geoff
  10. Hi Raiders, Just wondering how many litres would be best/recommended for a live tank please? Cheers Geoff
  11. Hi Scratchie, Thanks for the reply, and the PM mate. I have a a lot to learn - but I so look forward to doing it
  12. Hi GH1952, thanks for the reply mate. I have been outside before with others but not so much where I have been the skipper. The only real info I have received off one of the guys I have been out with before is "forget it if there is a southerly". I just need to know what I am looking at as far as picking a day where I can go out on a planned trip where its safe, and the sea aren't too rough. I have all of the safety gear and will be cruising out in a 5.2 Savage Escort with a 125 on the back. Thanks Geoff P.S Mate what is BOM Weather?
  13. Hi all, Was hoping to get out a bit deeper this weekend and have a go at Snapper fishing in the Port Stephens area. I'm fairly new to boating in general so don't know what websites to check or what sort of conditions I am looking for. Can anyone tell me a good app for website to look at and hint the type of conditions that are ideal and then the type that are dangerous. Thanks heaps Geoff
  14. Thanks Scratchie. Appreciate the link mate. I am new to the area and I have read a few of your threads.... would love to have a beer with ya one day and pick your brains a little as you know how to catch all species and in all conditions. Thanks Geoff
  15. Thanks for that Mahi Mahi. I should point out that I will be fishing the Port Stephens area also. Thanks Geoff
  16. G'day Raiders, I am very, very keen to catch some Snapper, but need help from the more experienced members if I may. Firstly what type of rod and reel setup I should get? I'd like a good outfit but nothing way over the top in price if at all possible.... Personally I prefer an eggbeater reel over the overhead setup, so any advice on that very much appreciated. Now with catching Snapper, are they seasonal fish - or certain times of the year are better then others? Should the water temp be certain temp, are cloudy days better then say sunny days? etc etc I know that they are found pretty much only around reefs, so I'll be needing a reef anchor for my boat, I have a new Lowrance Elite 7 with chirp so hopefully that will help me find some new reefs but I do know of one that I can try once I get the jist of what I'm doing. Thanks heaps in advance. Geoff
  17. Hi boys, Thanks for all the help on this, I really appreciate it. I have taken the lead out and have fed it through the hole above the water line where the outboard cables go through. I ended up by having way enough cable to do this so why I didn't just do this in the first place I'll never know. I'm going to epoxy the hole I created and hopefully this will be sweet. Once I have got it on the water and have had a play with it I'll let you know.... could be a while though as I have no experience with fish finders and will be flat out reading the difference between fish and bottom - just looks like an ultrasound to me. Some people get the picture but I don't know what I'm looking at :-)
  18. I went with the lowrance elite 7 with chirp. Starting to wish I never put the hole where I did
  19. Yeah mate, still have the old rubber piece that was in there. You think that would be good enough?
  20. That is a very kind offer 4myson, You're a legend to offer that to me and I really appreciate it. I have had all sorts of offers from some great members on here to help out at their place etc this really is a special forum, but I just recently moved north mate, but thank you so much for the offer. I have just purchased a tube of the SIKAFLEX (white) from Bunnings to squirt in my screw holes for my new transducer, so I have a tube mate, should I put in one of them rubber emergency bungs and give it a good going over with the SIKAFLEX - you have any pictures to follow mate or know of somewhere I can get an idea? Thanks Geoff Certainly do Paikea - You are one of the kind people also mate. Didn't have much choice Roylo, I didn't want to either but my transom is weird shaped at the back and didn't have much choice.
  21. Hi all, Problem #107 I have started to install a new Fish finder in my boat and have started with the transducer, the problem I have is that I couldn't find a suitable spot above the water line to make the hole to insert the end of the transducer cable, I now have a hole in my transom and I'm wondering the best way to fill the hole in to make it water proof with the cable in the hole in mind. I removed that old transducer the previous owner must of put in (which was in the exact same spot - but on the other side) and he had the hole plugged with a piece of rubber that fit in the hole, but had a small piece removed to fit the cable in and it was under a cable cover both sides (pictured) and just filled in with silicon. Any ideas on the best way for me to do this is really appreciated. Thanks Geoff
  22. Thanks mate, and thanks all for the replies. Onto my next problem that I need help with
  23. Yeah looking at the wiring diagram of the same type of switch of a different brand (attached) I think with the switch I have the feed terminal will always be live depending on which battery I select. So I think I either get a dual circuit type switch so I have 2 different feed terminals of I keep what I have and just make sure I select the correct battery for use when I'm on the water, because hopefully If I select number 2 while sitting idle on the water to run my electronics, I shouldn't be using any charge what so ever from battery 1...... sound about right you think?
  24. I have the lead from my start battery going to number 1 and the second battery going to number 2 on the terminal marked feed I have the lead that goes to my outboard and also my lead that supplies power to the electronics
