  1. Havent any of you guys learnt? LOL Carabeena's are designed for Abseiling... they are a quick release device designed to be able to be undone easily under load!!!!!!!! DOH!!!! Spring loaded ones are probably worse than screw gate type. Seriously Galvanised D-shackles are the only way to go... but test them first!!! If you tighten them with pliers or a shifting spanner make sure you can't undo them with your fingers.... If you can reject them like John west!!! they are cheap so you shouldnt be. Now here is a serious tip for you too... If you are tired of snagging sand anchors and loosing them... you can either buy yourself a new anchor with the sliding ring....or Drill a hole near the head of your sand anchor and attache your rope and D-shackle there.... then where your old hole was use a thick paper clip like a garden tie and with a couple of twists last the rope along the anchor shaft.... This actually works better than the slip ring anchor as with the slip ring you may not be able to get the ring to slide down the shaft to put it out backwards.... Now if you pull hard enough (often with your motor) the paperclip will undo and you will have a direct line of pull on the rope to the head of the anchor and up it comes..... my uncle who is a retired boat builder showed me this years ago..... it also works on solid reef picks..... and costs nothing.... well 5c for the paperclip..... good luck Rodger

    Hubs

Sorry mate, but the hubs I have had and have now have no markings on them.... The old ones would have corroded off and the new ones are galvanised so the gal would hide it if it was there.... Best thing is to take one of your wheels with you (put the trailer on axles stands on one side if you have no spare) the hubs will usually be either Holden HR, HT or Ford but remember due to the differnt position of the mounting plate on the rim (where the hub fits) in relation to the tyre YOUR AXLE MAY NOT BE LONG ENOUGH!!!!!! Also Your mud guards will most likely need to be modified.... My brother did this on his boat and it was a real hassle..... Bigger wheels help with fibreglass boats as they weigh more and hence cause more bearing wear....but on aluminium they make no difference unless you are doing long journeys regularly as it only affexts how often the bearings spin.... small wheel = more spinning! Cheers Rodger
  3. too true.... the oxide can't oxidise any further.... you remove it you provide a fresh surface to be oxidised..... the only way to "polish a tinnie" is to use an acid etching solution on small sections at a time then wash it off after a short period (or it will keep eating) This removes a layer of oxide and removes some light scratching.... Then you need to hand buff it as you go with a cloth or buffing wheel.... But honestly... either paint it... or forget it.... tinnies are not for beauty ... they are a workhorse.... they look great when brand new but people buy tinnies because you can knock them about ... If you want a pretty boat...buy a fibreglass.... but when the expensive repair bills start rolling in and you have to wrap it in cotton wool.. dont say I didnt tell you so.... BTW... dont paint the underside... unless in pale blue or you will scare crap out of the fish...
  4. Do people still eat mullet? are we really that desperate? watch out for the blind mullet too!.... (you can tell them ...they have a beter flavour)
  5. I vaguely rmember them being called a butter fish.... but havent seen them round for 20 yrs... we used to get them up into the georges in the drought...
  6. Hi Guys, Guess I better put something Here too... My name is Rodger.... and I only tripped over the site a couple of weeks ago.... after a long search for something like it. 1'm 37 (keep having to remember that Kelvin (namesay) is 1yr and 3 days older than me...(Ha ha hawknose...you will be truning grey before me) Im married to a pommy yorkshire lass (gawd what was I thinking?) with two step kids and 15 and 12yr old boys. & I live in southwestern sydney near Liverpool... after spending near 10 years living in Yass Near Canberra where I did my stint of Freshwater.... My fishing background is long and varied..... Started fishing as soon as I could hold a rod and for many years if I wasnt at school or working that was what I would be doing.... Kelvin (namesay) and I spent our Highschool years together masacreing Blackfish on the Georges river as well as rock hopping for drummer, blackfish and taylor... I ended up down in Yass for some time and became an avid fly fisherman... (biggest was a 7lb brown from Eucumbene river and 6lb rainbow from same on 4x leaders) and tied my own flies etc... (still have all the gear if someone is interested PM me) Now Im back in sydney and back to the salt... I have a white 4.6m Stessl international runabout.... (looked at other bigger boats but they couldny sneak into the shallows for the Lizzards...which I do well for).... And I want to get out fishing ... ALL THE TIME!!! (stangely my wife enjoys the time away from me...no probs there as long as I can go fishing!...I want one of those shirts ...you know the ones!) Haven quite got the kids interested enuf yet... Cheers Rodger Wearne
  7. Nicely reported guys... Great to meet everyone... and catch up with my old friend Kelvin whom I have known since we were 14 or 15... (young fishermen never die... they just get older) we definately have to get out together sometime... So much for not a puff of wind.....LOL... it nearly blew us from one side of middle harbour to the other. Thanks to those who helped organise the kingy social.and to all the sponsors..I think it was most excellent ... sorry I left early but my deckie wanted to go home...too early a day for the old fella...so I didnt get to meet everyone I would like to get to know... one suggesion for next time...COULD SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHERE THE BLOODY FISH ARE? ( or at least have some of the blokes with local knowledge come out with those of us that don't.... I know Botany bay & Georges R well but not the harbour) Well at least when I left, Namesay didnt have one either (thanks for making me feel better Kelvin!) I think they should award me a prize for throwing the towel in first. or for being the first to drag a squid to death... Anyway this has to be the best fishing forum I have ever found ....what a great bunch of people and keen fisherfolk...thanks guys.... Looking forward to the next social ...or at least a fishing trip or two ...or 3.... or four... lets make it regular ok..... (anyone want to actually show me how to catch these kingys? I will supply the boat!) Would be keen to hit pittwater sometime too if others are interested? Thanks Rodger Wearne(OneMoreFish)

  10. Havent seen a shark in the georges since the mid 80s... they used to come up regularly to Milperra in the 80s drought.... (Namesay and I always hoped they would eat the water skiers at east hills) But the river has been ruined a lot with both the creation of the chipping norton lakes which creates a near perminant layer of suspended silt in the water and the flood mittigation levy at Kelso Creek at East Hills which thanks to Bankstown council killed the creek and a very major food source and breeding ground in the river.... so no feed, no breed = no small fish = no bigger fish = no sharks... Namesay & I used to catch litteral keeper nets full of Blackfish all 2.5-4lb each time we went out... but the levy killed that (used to be true bedsheet size sheets of cabbage weed floatin down!) We even caught Old Maid and Surgeon fish at East Hills and Milperra.... the water was that clean.... But Not now.... RIP the good old days..... Fisheries is actually pushing for the removal of fish barriers at the moment and I have reported the levy to them.... and it was evidentally tagged by them as a problem already... so the more pressure here the better boys....more little fish upstream means bigger fish all over.. including in the bay...!!!! I can send you the fisheries contacts details if you PM me. but back to the sharks... regardless of rumours of sharks in an area or not... if you cant see the bottom and all around you for a long way ...don't go swimming....(unless you are a politician!) Tight Lines Rodger
